The fair was organized by Career Networks and the Center for Community Engagement, with significant assistance from Patty Hartshorn, Rocio Diaz, Carrie Lee Bland-Kendall and Veronica Kindel with the college’s Events Office. The festivities also included a convocation featuring Guy Fisher, the chief program officer of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County. The discussion was facilitated by Egypt Boyd, a sophomore film production and...

Student-athletes make concessions
The association of student athletes has been busy working on new accommodations and updates for the student-athlete experience. The ASA is made up of one representative from each of the 16 sports teams at Goshen College, working to serve and represent all student-athletes on campus. This leadership team is led by their adviser, Chad Coleman, associate director of athletics. This year, ASA was certified as a Student Life organization for the first time. “I’ve really enjoyed helping ASA legitimize themselves and be taken seriously as a student organization for the first time,” Coleman said. “I want to see them thrive....

Protests ‘Target’ ICE support
Goshen College students and community members gathered Saturday at the local Target to protest the corporation’s support of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. About 125 people assembled, expecting a hymn sing inside the store. However, they were forced to leave the store before the formal demonstration could begin. Undeterred, the group moved outside to sing hymns and chant, holding signs reading “Love melts ICE” and “Jesus was an immigrant.” This protest was organized by Mennonite Action Michiana, as a part of the national Mennonite Action campaign to “Sing The Doors Down.” This organization is an Anabaptist movement committed to active...

Leafs level up in conference
On Wednesday, Feb. 4, Goshen College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both took victories in a doubleheader, as both Maple Leaf sides overcame the Taylor Trojans inside the Ruth Gunden Gymnasium. The Trojan men are currently ranked 24th in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Trojan women are receiving votes. This game marked the second victory in a row for the men, who snapped their three-year losing streak in conference the game before against Marian. It also marked their first win in conference play this season. On National Girls and Women in Sports Day, it was the women’s...

Student-written play set for premiere
“Sins of the Father,” a new play, will make its debut in a staged reading this upcoming Friday, Feb. 13 on the Umble Center stage. Written, produced and directed by Kate Bodiker, a senior writing and communication major, the play is a “historic reimagining of the biblical story of Cain and Abel.” “Sins of the Father” came to be in the fall of Bodiker’s junior year, when she took a playwriting class, where the class activity entailed bringing a photo to class. Bodiker brought a photo of the oldest English-speaking church in the world, St. Martin’s Church in Canterbury, that...

More turnover at Merry Lea
Goshen College’s Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center is unexpectedly starting the spring 2026 semester without Ryan Sensenig, their interim executive director. A search for a new executive director started on Jan. 30, and the center announced the opening via Instagram on Feb. 2. In the meantime, Ann Vendrely, vice president of academic affairs and academic dean at GC, is acting as the interim executive director. Sensenig resigned from his position in early December. He was appointed to the temporary position in August, after the resignation of Jason Martin in late July, following the college’s sudden decision to put Martin on...

MDS May term to Hawaii
This May’s Study-Service Term with Mennonite Disaster Service will take place in Lahaina, Hawaii. Leaders Michael McHugh and Dale Klassen will accompany 13 students on this service trip to help restore Lahaina after the devastating wildfires it experienced in August 2023. Two spots on the trip are still available. Students will be spending eight-hour days at jobsites working on home construction and repairs for various members of the Lahaina community. Similar to this year’s term, Goshen College’s previous Disaster Service SST May terms have been organized with Kaelan Swartley, an MDS coordinator for weekly volunteers. Each term follows the loose...

Kulp to Coffman and more on housing
On Monday, the annual housing info night was hosted by Residence Life for all students to learn more about the housing options for next year. After introducing the system first imposed last spring for applying for housing and roommates, an emphasis was also placed on reinforcing the correct way to go through the process. Hosted by Chandler Buchfeller, associate dean of students, it was revealed that Coffman Residence Hall will now be used in place of Kulp Residence Hall. This is due to the fact that Coffman holds a better student-to-fixture ratio, including bathrooms and kitchens. Coffman also includes the...

Disc golf off to a spinning start
Men’s and women’s disc golf, the newest athletic teams on campus, have officially started practicing. Jason Samuel transitioned from his role as full-time station manager at 91.1 The Globe to his current position as disc golf head coach on Feb. 1, while still maintaining some responsibility in the communication department. Emerson Landis, a first-year social work major and recent recruit for the team said, “Jason is preparing us to do our best … his end goal is to make it to nationals … he wants this team to be successful.” To welcome GC disc golf to the league, the Great...

An insightful weekend with new “PIN pals”
Students at Goshen College participated in a weekend-long training for the Prevention Intervention Network between Jan. 21 and Feb. 2. The program focused on the prevention of different forms of assault and interpersonal violence against students and to educate and make the campus community a safer place for everyone. While first-year students all receive active bystander training from PIN members which educate them on the warning signs of abuse and ways to intervene, those who seek to join PIN receive a different type of training. This training includes teaching members how to be a community resource and peer educator. Anna...

Black Student Union: revamped
You may have seen them at the recent Black History Month convo, or at a table in Westlawn Hall, but how well do you really know those heading the Black Student Union? Egypt Boyd, Jalen Borneo John and Miguel Aguilar are all newly appointed leaders of BSU, but that isn’t all they do. Boyd probably has the fullest schedule of the group. Boyd is a sophomore with a double major in film production and writing, which already leads to a busy class schedule. But adding her involvement in PIN, Student Senate, The Record, Squirrel Digest and BSU, it’s easy to...

A night at the sports game
This week, I decided to venture away from Goshen College’s Visual Arts Building and Music Center (my usual haunts) to the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center for a change of pace. What little-known extremities of our fine campus remained unknown to my keen eye? To my delight, there was a sport performance about to begin when I stopped by. What luck! I first approached the box office and inquired whether there were any available seats in the mezzanine. I picked up a playbill (title: “Men’s Volley-Ball”) and was directed by the usher into the audience where I sat among the other...

Bowlers knock down competition
The Goshen College men’s and women’s bowling teams finished the Crossroads League Tournament last week with a fifth and a third place finish respectively. Goshen’s second highest varsity bowler was Abigail Kenestrick, who placed 22nd overall with 524 pins. The highest Goshen bowler on the junior varsity team was sophomore Samantha Bean, placing 14th with 551 pins, six pins ahead of her JV teammate...

New Winter Olympic sports
After much deliberation with the International Olympic Committee, we are thrilled to announce the new Olympic sports that will be debuting in the French Alps 2030 games. Winter Triathlon: Inspired by the beloved Summer Games tradition, winter triathlon provides a similarly rigorous endurance-based competition for those that prefer to compete in the cold. In this all-new event, athletes will begin their first stage with a 10-kilometers snowshoe trek up a mountain. At the top of the mountain, they will remove their snowshoes and jump onto their luge, beginning the 1,500 meter slide down the track, which will include 15...
