GC assistant coach recovers from heart attack
Goshen College’s baseball assistant coach Mike Brouillette suffered a heart attack on the morning of Jan. 22 at his brother-in-law’s house in Warsaw, Indiana. Brouillette went down minutes after complaining about back pain and was immediately taken by an ambulance to the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. There, the medical team administered defibrillation 31 times and performed CPR for approximately 43 minutes. He was then placed on a ventilator and a temporary pacemaker for a day and a half before returning to a steady heartbeat. The doctors referred to it as “a complete miracle,” his wife said, Mandi Brouillette, considering...

Following 22 years of work at Goshen College as the assistant director of institutional research and academic database manager, Bob Toews has announced that he will retire at the end of this semester. Over the course of his time at GC, Toews worked across the institutional research office and the registrar’s office. His role includes managing student and some faculty data, course evaluations and setting up courses. “My job has changed a little bit over the years,” said Toews; he started in the registrar’s office as a student records data manager. Toews’ responsibilities increased to his current position as the...

A new chapter with sports
A consistent adage in my senior seminar this year has been that you can never really ruin your life — unless you start committing crimes or doing drugs, those are the exceptions. But, even if it’s hard to ruin your life, you can change it pretty fundamentally in a moment or two. For me, that happened the first time I dislocated my knee when I was 14, pretty much forever destroying my dreams of playing college soccer, set in stone when I dislocated it again two years later. While being an athlete is no longer a defining part of my...

the art box: In Loving Memory
Bright red dahlias Adorn your marble tombstone, Making mockery Of our black mourning Clothes, the early autumn breeze Turning tears to ash. The preachers words rang Through the old family graves. Grandpa waited for Her to come as dust Inched over the ridges of A date six years old. Red petals scatter As the box is lowered in The unforgiving Dirt. Our last chance to Say goodbye to something soon Lost to endless time.

Bikes, feet and scooters
Walk: Beka Youngberg Vigorous, sparkly, snowy Junior art major Beka Youngberg has a great love for the walking technique. In part because she doesn’t have many other options, you will always catch Beka on the walk. Beka’s walking shoes of choice are her “adventure shoes.” She is sure to stay away from wearing Converse if she wants to thoroughly enjoy her walk without knee pain. Beka’s favorite things about the walking technique are the exercise involved and being able to enjoy the environment because of the slow pace walking forces upon her. Beka did bring up the fact that she...

‘Goshen Genius’ loses in postseason tournament
After a five-episode winning streak, $105,915 in winnings and a call to make a return for the seasons-end “Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions,” Ben Ganger made a swift exit on the first episode of the tournament. The episode that aired on Wednesday, Jan. 21 also led to Goshen College and community support and a watch party at The Fold, a restraunt and bar in downtown Goshen. Ben Ganger ’16, a GC and Bowling Green State University graduate, first made an impression on national television when he went on his five-day winning streak in late spring of 2025, and the impressive display...

Stern announces resignation
Kortney Stern, assistant professor of English, has announced that she will be resigning at the end of the school year with plans to relocate in June. Currently, she is unsure exactly what next year will look like, but is currently applying for positions in teaching English faculty at colleges on the West Coast and in the Southwest. Stern emphasized that this was not a decision made easily but rather one that was “deeply painful” and made out of a necessity to care for her mental health. She comes from a tight-knit family from the Bay Area, most of whom still...

the art box: Premature
Your home isn’t a home yet. You decided to introduce yourself earlier than expected. We weren’t surprised though. You have been ready to arrive. Your home isn’t a home yet. Your long but fragile body, laying on a soft sea of cottons. Wires attached, on every part of you like vines wrapped around a tree. Your home isn’t a home yet. Those vines doing the job they are supposed to do Beep, beep, beep, beep The sounds drown out slowly. I look down to you, my baby I say. You are not my own, but I will love you and...

Students and buildings brave the cold
The power went off in Yoder Residence Hall on Jan. 19. Though the power soon returned, the heat did not. Concern quickly mounted as students began to realize the temperatures in their rooms had drastically dropped. “Our entire floor was freezing,” said Egypt Boyd, a sophomore film production and writing major who lives on the second floor of Yoder. “We would go outside, be freezing, and then come back inside and nothing would change. It was terrible.” The problem persisted until Tuesday night, when Chandler Buchfeller, director of Residence Life, brought the issue to the attention of Steve Shantz, systems...

‘Actually scared’: the great scooter takeover
A seemingly newfound fad at Goshen College, the motorized scooter is fast approaching the title of most-used method of transportation on campus. Electric scooters have seemed to wax and wane through the GC career of Kevin Schultz, assistant director of Residence Life, but it was a noticeable uptick at the beginning of the fall semester. “I think it’s been an ebb and flow over the years as far as seeing more one semester but none the other semester,” Schultz said. Junior social work major Isaiah Beiter said, “I think [having a scooter] is a good idea, especially when trying to...

The day the Cirque came to town
“Welcome to Africa in Goshen!” exclaimed Yamoussa Bangoura as he introduced his Cirque Kalabanté show on Tuesday evening. As a part of Sauder Concert Hall’s Performing Arts Series, Bangoura and his crew brought the culture of daily life in Guinea to Indiana through his show, “Afrique en Cirque.” Through acts of contortion, acrobatics, drumlines and dancing accompanied by live music, the performance left viewers in awe. Bangoura led the audience to participate during the show through call and response exercises, clapping along to the music and leading them in song. With each stunt and contortion routine, the energy in the...

Men’s volleyball falls in five-set thriller
The Goshen College men’s volleyball team played their first home game of the 2026 season in a matchup against the Judson University Eagles on Tuesday. Taking 10-7 lead largely due to the first-year connection of Nash Hubick and Ryan Kabrich.
