Men’s and women’s disc golf, the newest athletic teams on campus, have officially started practicing. Jason Samuel transitioned from his role as full-time station manager at 91.1 The Globe to his current position as disc golf head coach on Feb. 1, while still maintaining some responsibility in the communication department. Emerson Landis, a first-year social work major and recent recruit for the team said, “Jason is preparing us to do our best … his end goal is to make it to nationals … he wants this team to be successful.”
To welcome GC disc golf to the league, the Great Lakes Conference Commissioner has added a conference match to the season to take place in Kalamazoo, Michigan on March 28. The team will also face off against Purdue University in a head-to-head match on March 8 in West Lafayette. “These two matches, coupled with an exhibition event against some local professional squads will be a good indicator of where we are as a team,” Samuel said. For now, the teams are confined to the racquet ball courts on the second floor of the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, but are looking forward to hitting the links. “[I’m] looking forward to being able to go outside and practice in the coming weeks,” Landis said.
“It’s exciting to finally get started even if we are inside because of the weather. The racquetball courts feel smaller and smaller every week,” Samuel added.
The Great Lakes Conference has also approved GC’s proposal to host a conference match next September. The Dash Bash at Ox Bow’s date will be announced after the national championships in April.
