As reported by The Record on Apr. 12, Goshen College’s printing and mailing office closed as the fall semester started.
Basic printing and copying remain available through departmental printers located in buildings around campus. However, the executive office is in contact with ITS Media debating a possibility to expand the functionality of the printers to attend to a higher quality and more complex demand.Meanwhile a partnership with Economy Offset, a local, small and minority-based printing company, was announced through an email sent to employees by Martin Gunawan, vice president for finance. The business is a four minute drive from campus.
Rick Smith, who used to serve as the printing and mailing manager at GC, was hired by Economic Offset to serve as the college’s primary mediator for print production. Concluded printing will still go through campus post and distributed to its respective departments staying consistent with past services.
“It’s an adjustment to plan a little further ahead to get your materials there,” said Ann Vendrely, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean. “I haven’t heard a lot of concerns yet, but it feels like it’s really early in the cycle to know how well and how smooth things are going.”
For larger printing and mailing needs, requests should be submitted through Marcomm and its staff will coordinate the process with another external vendor. Projects will need extra time for design and five additional days for printing. Unmailed materials will be delivered to campus to be picked up at campus post.
Vendrely hopes the changes bring the college a better understanding of its finances. “There were a lot of rental expenses for equipment that we had there so there will be savings in some areas and costs in others,” she said. “We are going to have to watch and see how it balances out.”
