Nursing department to find new home in Westlawn
As part of Goshen College’s long-term master plan, the second and third floors of Westlawn Dining Hall will soon be the new home for the nursing department. The floors were residential halls in decades past, but now sit dormant. Almost a quarter of GC students major in nursing, making it the largest program at the school, and it is currently filled to capacity in its current home on the 2nd floor of Wyse Hall. Jewel Yoder, head of the nursing department, said when both undergraduate and graduate students are on campus, “the floor is extremely busy and crowded.” Lydia Holsopple,...

Westlawn gets a makeover
Westlawn Dining Hall received a make-over over fall break. The changes include all new tables and chairs, new flooring, art and signage. The renovations, carried out in partnership between AVI Fresh and Goshen College, were meant to improve the dining experience at Westlawn and make the space feel less like a generic cafeteria and more like a part of the Goshen College campus, said Danielle Pagoria, the interior designer for the project. Plans for the renovation began a couple of years ago while Pagoria was working with Glenn Gilbert on renovating the communication center. “At that time, we were only...

Goshen College works to reimagine campus flow
Goshen College is nearing the end of a year-long process with the campus planning consulting firm Credo, after the initial timeline was pushed back due to COVID-19. The administration decided a long term campus plan was necessary after noticing that every new renovation project resulted in the displacement of other groups on campus. Credo was recommended to the administration by another consultant because of it’s high quality and holistic approach, according to Ann Vendrely, academic dean. “When they first came to campus they also looked at some of our student support structures at the same time they looked at our...

New 10th Street entryway to replace GC’s Ninth Street entrance
Goshen College’s campus could have a new entrance by next spring. The proposed project, which is steadily moving through the approval process with the City of Goshen, would open an entrance at 10th St. and College Ave. The Goshen Plan Commission has recommended approval of the plans to the city council which suggests that the project will soon have full approval. The construction stage is dependent on weather and the contractor’s schedule, but it could start before Christmas. The goal is to have the entrance open by next spring. The driving factor to complete the new entrance is the neighborhood...

The $1.4 million Center for Communication Studies, which includes studios for 91.1FM The Globe (WGCS), Globe TV and a newsroom for The Goshen College Record, was completed just in time for the start of the fall semester. After being spread out across the campus for decades, with The Globe in the Union Building, the Globe TV studio in the Harold and Wilma Good Library and the newsroom in the Kulp Annex, the communication department’s co-curriculars will finally join forces under one roof. Goshen College community settles into the renovated Union Building
With the spring semester off to a start and the renovations in the Goshen College Union Building completed, staff members and students have had time to adjust and settle to the new spaces. The eight-month long project was completed in September of 2019. The last piece of the puzzle was the relocation and new design of ITS Media, the AV desk and the bookstore. ITS Media now has larger work and office spaces. These renovations were part of a separate project and budget from the previous reservations of the Juanita Lark Welcome Center and the new Leaf Raker Cafe. Glenn...

Power transmissions being replaced after a century
American Electric Power (AEP) is replacing its 95-year-old power grid transmission lines running from Albion all the way to Goshen. The project started about two years ago, but the work in Goshen only began in late summer, with plans for the new towers in Goshen to be up and be feeding electricity to the city by December. As owners of the nation’s largest electricity transmission system, AEP delivers electricity to nearly 5.4 million customers in 11 different states. AEP’s utility units in Indiana operate as Indiana Michigan Power (I&M). The current power line was created in 1925. To ensure power...

Historic mailboxes find new use
The Union renovation left hundreds of mailboxes without a purpose. Once the hub of social activity, the mailboxes are finding new life in creative hands. David Miller, retired biology professor and former Merry Lea program director, offered his woodworking skills to build savings banks using the mailbox doors. Miller has over 300 doors to work with. The doors are the most memorable part of the mailboxes. The oldest ones are made of brass, Miller said. A pattern of ornate lines forms a border around the edges, and a twelve-pointed star decorates the keyhole. “I know that the doors of old...

The collection includes 100 works of Haitian art, spanning 55 years of Haitian culture. The pieces will rotate through the gallery in the Hunsberger Commons. Newcomer 19 and the Union’s makeovers fall under one of the many institutional commitments President Stoltzfus originally presented in her “Strategic Vision, Priorities and Actions” meeting on Jan. 22. GC office relocations
More than a dozen Goshen College employees have a new view this fall, having relocated offices in an effort to provide easy points of service for prospective and current students. The admissions team and the Center for Intercultural and International Education (CIIE) swapped locations over the summer, with admissions moving to the Union Building and CIIE taking over the lower level of Wyse Hall. Adriana Ortiz, a senior admissions counselor, said, “The move was necessary. This beautiful institution should always be open to anyone interested in visiting or studying here. In our previous location we did not have enough space...

Pottinger exhibit to open at GC
David Pottinger, a Goshen resident, is known nationally for his collection of antique quilts from Amish communities. Now, Goshen College has its own Pottinger collection of quilts and household antiques on display. Pottinger moved to Goshen in 1989 and began his projects in a downtown historic renovation. Three books have been published about his collections of Amish quilts and antiques, and hundreds of quilts were acquired by major U.S museums across the country. In 1983, an exhibit of Pottinger’s quilts toured museums in the U.S and Europe. The exhibit was particularly popular in Zurich, Switzerland, the historic home of the...

GC to build ‘Dr. John Ingold Sports Complex’ this spring
John Ingold, a household name at Goshen College, will now be forever etched into its history. A ribbon cutting ceremony during Homecoming weekend, beginning October 2, will be the formal announcement of the Dr. John Ingold Sports Complex. The honor follows the athletic department’s decision to reformat their transportation system, a system in which Ingold was heavily involved. Josh Gleason, Goshen’s athletic director, mentioned that the addition of this complex would be the perfect opportunity to honor Ingold’s years of service to Goshen College. The new structure will contain an 8-foot pathway, complete with a decorative archway. Construction will begin in...

Pool Space Redesigned For Athletes
The pool space in the Recreation-Fitness Center will now be designated as an area for athletes. The current plan for renovating the pool space involves putting in turf, batting cages and workout machines that are more specific to the needs of athletes. When the batting cages fell in the gym and injured several people at a high school volleyball league this summer, the RFC explored alternative options for the location of the batting cages. Josh Keister, recreation-fitness center director, stated that in addition to the accident, the wear and tear on the gym floor from baseballs and softballs prompted the RFC...

Where have the swimmers gone
Community members of Goshen are looking for new places to swim. When the Goshen College pool in the Recreation Fitness Center closed last fall, avid pool users like Linda SchlabachMiller and Sally Fuller, who taught water aerobic classes in the pool regularly, as well as regular lap swimmers and family pool users like Kevin Gary and his family, were forced to move on to other pools and opportunities—if they could find them. Unwilling to give up on her water aerobics class, Miller tried to find another pool to facilitate her weekly classes and encourage fitness. She was employedby the Goshen...
