New signs to welcome visitors
Visitors to Goshen College may soon be welcomed onto campus by new entrance monuments, as plans are in place for new signage on campus, pending approval from the city of Goshen. The current plan is to install new signs in two main entrances to campus: the Welcome Center entrance off of Main Street, and the newly constructed entrance on the north side of campus, off of 10th Street. However, the overall project goes well beyond just those initial steps. Cynthia Good Kaufmann, interim director of facilities, explained that the college also wants “to improve the corner of Main and College...

Review: ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ is a wild ride
As the first spring mainstage with a live audience since before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” sets the bar up high for all future musical shows at Goshen College. The show opened in the Umble Theater with an enthusiastic judge, a pining vice principal, a parolee, and six young spelling bee contestants (alongside four pre-selected audience participants). “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a wild ride from start to finish — the script is full of witty banter, relatable characters dealing with difficult life situations, and ridiculous song breaks. The tone...

International Student Club Coffeehouse back in full swing
Thirty-nine flags, 30 performers, 12 acts, three hosts, and what one performer called a “flamboyant” audience of over 320 people marked the return of the International Student Club (ISC) Coffeehouse. After two years of cancellations and restrictions due to COVID-19, Goshen College’s international students showcased the best of their countries’ music, clothing, dance and culture on Saturday. This year’s theme was an exploration of different identities, with the hosts referring the night’s program as their “map.” The set list included six songs, three dance numbers, two presentations and a poetry reading. The Ukraine crisis was a key focus for the...

ASL panel highlights Black interpreters
90% of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are white, according to a 2018 report from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Last Saturday, a panel hosted by the Black Student Union (BSU) sought to raise awareness about the lack of interpreters of color and the challenges that they face. Karen Horvath, an interpreting instructor at GC, said, “As a profession, there is a struggle to recruit and to grow the diversity of the interpreters who serve the Deaf community. There is simply a lack of numbers.” The panel, titled “Through Our Eyes,” included six Black interpreters, all of whom...

Outdoor art on campus: Worth a second look
Art is abundant at Goshen College. Galleries are located in Good Library, the music center and the Union Building. Much of the art on display, however, is located outside of these art-specific locations. Scattered throughout campus, works such as “Broken Shield” greet students and staff as they make their way through the day, popping up in surprising locations. What goes into purchasing, maintaining and rotating artwork located outside of specific art galleries? “The purchases happen in a variety of ways,” said Merrill Krabill, an art professor at Goshen. “Some of the work is donated.” “There’s also a collection of art...

Gender-inclusive housing finally finds a home
After multiple short-lived attempts over the past few years, gender-inclusive housing will return to campus next fall. Available to students of all genders, this housing option will be located on the first floor of Kulp. The Advocates club has been a long-time proponent of this addition, as its mission is to educate and promote open lines of communication between LGBTQ people and straight, cisgender communities. While an original plan would have labeled the floor an Intentional Living Community (ILC), as it has been in the past, the new model released by Residence Life categorizes it as a standard dorm floor...

‘mountain mirror’ wins Broadside poetry contest
Gravel, mirror, sycamore, light, frivolous and marigold. Those were the words writers had to include in their submission to this year’s Broadside poetry contest. The winning poem by Olivia Martin, a junior math major, combined the words to create a scene based in Shenandoah National Park. “I really like to hike, and I really hate capitalists,” Martin said. “So I decided to write a poem about the frustration I felt when people go and destroy something so pristine and undeveloped to make more money. I wanted to write a poem about what would happen if people stopped doing that.” The...

AVI caters to vegan students
The students have spoken, and the cooks are responding. Jeremy Corson, resident director of AVI, Dan Morris, the executive chef, and Denise Cook, executive sous chef, have all been working towards a more inclusive menu at Westlawn Dining Hall and the Leaf Raker. Over the past school year, Corson said he has received feedback from a handful of students and faculty concerning the lack of options for people who are vegan or have other dietary restrictions. The culinary team has been working to ensure everyone has an option at Westlawn and the Leaf Raker. Corson posted in the campus communicator...

Miami speaker shares the story of a living people
Many have heard of the Miami tribe, an indigenous group that originally lived in what is now Northern Indiana. But “Miami” is the name they were given by the Europeans. The name they use for themselves is “Myaamia.” “Every story has more than one side,” said Diana Hunter, a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma who spoke at Goshen College on Tuesday evening. “You’ve heard the American story all of your lives, but hopefully you [hear] a little of our story today.” Hunter serves as a historic preservation officer for her tribe and was invited to speak at GC...

Commuter student support group to begin meeting
Forty-nine percent of Goshen College students are commuters. For local students, living off-campus can help relieve the financial burden of being a college student. Being a commuter, however, comes with unique challenges. In order to help students manage those challenges, Courtney Ropp, coordinator of diversity, equity and inclusion, created a commuter student support group which will have its first meeting this Friday. The support group isn’t the first system set up to support commuter students. The Commuter Student Association (CSA) is an established group that is advised by Luna Maria Campos, administrative assistant for student life. The CSA regularly schedules...

Tennis’s short spring season cut even shorter
Tennis is normally a fall sport, but this spring, the men’s and women’s teams will have an additional mini season. The teams planned to have their first competition last Friday, Feb. 18 against Roosevelt University, but unforeseen circumstances forced Roosevelt to cancel the match. Two matches remain on the schedule for the men’s team and one for the women’s team. The men will compete against Olivet Nazarene University at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 18, at home, while the women will wait to kick off their season with a double header against Bethel University in April. The players have been...

Goshen athletes break records at Crossroads League Championships
Goshen College women’s and men’s indoor track and field teams competed in the Crossroads League Championships this past Friday and Saturday. The women’s team tied for seventh and the men’s team placed ninth, with numerous records and standards set along the way. “I felt energized and excited about the weekend,” said Rustin Nyce, head coach for the teams. “Each athlete stepped up with a season best, lifetime best, school record, and/or a national standard.” The women’s 4 x 800-meter relay, composed of Annika Alderfer Fisher, Naomi Ross Richer, Mia Wellington and Summer Cooper started Friday’s meet off strong, setting a school...

Review: Students astound at 62nd Concerto-Aria
Sauder Concert Hall was filled with ambient noise, increasing gradually as more and more people flowed into the room. It was time for the 62nd annual Concerto-Aria Competition. Through this competition, music students are given the opportunity to prepare an instrumental concerto or a sung aria — pieces written specifically to be accompanied by an orchestra. Students are adjudicated by an outside panel of judges, who chose four winners to perform with the Goshen College Symphony Orchestra (GCSO), currently directed by Brian Mast, music center executive director. This year’s winners included Augusta Nafziger, a junior writing and music major; Hannah...
