Lapp Klassen wins Peace Oratorical Contest
Greta Lapp Klassen won first place in the C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest on Tuesday with her speech “Humanizing Our World, One Walkway at a Time.” Her speech focused on the car-centric nature of American society and the struggles of people who do not own a vehicle. One of the three judges, Janna Hunter-Bowman, an associate professor of peace studies and Christian social ethics at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, highlighted a line from Lapp Klassen’s speech: “If you aren’t driving a car in 2022, you are not a fully participatory member of our capitalist society.” Hunter-Bowman said she and...

A pastor who dumpster dives?
Cathy Stoner became Goshen College’s campus pastor in September. Since then, she’s proved to be anything but your average pastor. Stoner loves bike rides, dumpster diving and funk music. She also enjoys running with her dog and fixing bikes. Stoner uses her runs and bike rides as opportunities to scavenge thrown-away items, like the red boots she wore to speak in chapel one Wednesday last semester. One of Stoner’s most treasured “found items” is a bicycle she saved from the side of the road. “I watched it rusting away over the course of 15 or 20 years in someone’s yard,”...

What to do when the Rott is at rock bottom
As a decade-long vegetarian, I have always been a scavenger when it comes to lunch rooms. I will always have a way to eat, no matter what may be served that day. Meatloaf day in the cafeteria? Well, I got apples and pears. Bam. Fruit salad. And, although I am a first-year, I think I know some pretty awesome Rott Recipes. So, here I am sharing my findings so you don’t have to go hungry. Egg Sandwich – 1 good scoop of Rott Scrambled Eggs – Two slices of bread (toasted) – Cheddar cheese – Mayonnaise So, I know...

‘Education matters’: Proposed bill raises controversy
A controversial education reform bill titled “Education Matters,” HB 1134, passed out of the Indiana Senate Education Committee on Wednesday and is set to advance to the full Senate for debate next week. HB 1134 has gained the support of Joanna King (R-49), a representative from Goshen College’s district, who has already voted in favor of the bill. Indiana Sen. Linda Rogers (R-11), who represents some of Elkhart County, is the bill’s lead sponsor in the senate alongside co-sponsor State Sen. Blake Doriot (R-12), representing GC’s district. If passed, the bill will prohibit Indiana teachers from teaching lessons that suggest...

Arguments for the superior dorm
Suppose you’re a bright-eyed senior in high school just itching to arrive at GC to start the magical journey that is college here in The Maple City. But, alas, you must make one of the most important decisions of your entire life: which residence hall to live in. Well fret no longer! As two GC seniors, we have put together a comprehensive argument to which residence hall is the best option. As a high school student, I had heard the stories, the legends, the legacies. Friends and relatives all had tales of when they had passed through the iconic dormitory....

Two seniors share personal stories through theater shows
The Goshen College theater department began its spring season on Feb. 16 with two plays written and presented by seniors majoring in the field: “An Ode to Blackness” by Gloria Bontrager-Thomas and “Behind the Curtain” by Tobias Garcia. These shows started off as projects that theater majors are required to present by the end of their senior year. “They can be originally written stories or an adaptation of a stage play,” said Fatima Rhana, an actor in Bontrager-Thomas’s play. “You can choose whether to direct or act in it, just as long as you put your idea onto the stage...

Men’s and women’s basketball seasons come to an end
The Goshen College men’s and women’s basketball teams battled against Bethel University at home on Saturday in the annual US Highway 20 Cup. The women’s team came out on top, winning 108-98, whereas the men’s team fell short, finishing the last game of their season 63-84. On Tuesday, the women’s team also wrapped up their season after losing to Indiana Wesleyan University in the conference tournament. “I was disappointed in the result tonight and felt like we are a much better team than we showed out there,” said Stephanie Miller, the women’s basketball coach, after the Tuesday game. “But what...

The newest tabletop game to play
Summer Cooper loves games. Board games, card games, video games — you name it. She took her hobby to a new level when she created her very own game for the Library Geek-Off last week. The tabletop game “Survive College: Goshen Edition” won first prize in the competition. For Cooper, a sophomore exercise science major from Elkhart, the game is an expression of her appreciation for Goshen College and the friendships she’s built here. The game Cooper created lasts 30 to 60 minutes and is played with two to four people. The goal of the game is to earn 120...

The Bachelorette: GC edition
It’s not often that reality TV finds its way to Goshen, Indiana. Instead of waiting for that to happen, Hayley Kirkton and Rachel Mast are working on their own satirical take of a national phenomenon. The GC Bachelorette will be Goshen College’s very own rendition of ABC’s hit reality show “The Bachelorette.” In GC’s version, instead of actually trying to find love, Kirkton and Mast will poke fun at popular tropes and give a comedic take on competing for love on a national stage. The project’s conception began when Kirkton, a senior social work major, came up with the idea...

Online shopping increases waste
With online ordering options becoming easier to use and the pandemic making many people wary of entering stores, online shopping has exploded over the last couple of years — across the U.S. and at Goshen College. “I do pretty much all of my shopping online,” said Jonathan Weaver, a first-year. “Amazon delivers really quickly and makes my everyday life a lot easier.” Weaver isn’t alone. With packages coming at the click of a button and providing a way to avoid interaction during the pandemic, American e-commerce increased by 32% in 2020 according to Forbes. In addition to GC students doing...

Photo essay: Creating, exhibiting, surviving
Over the last few years, I’ve been breathing, dreaming, eating and hearing art. The desire to make art keeps me up at night, and at times I even dream about it. For an art major, the senior art show is everything. It is the chance to show the entire world the artist that you are and the art you have created. One year ago I thought I had mine all figured out. I was wrong. Thoughts came rushing in, and I began to overthink. I had a mental block that lasted an entire semester. “This is not good enough, you...

Mid-season check-in: How are the Leafs doing?
As Goshen College nears spring break, many sports teams are reaching crucial points in their seasons. With teams just weeks away from the conference tournaments, this is where their records currently stand. The men’s volleyball pulled off an incredible come-from-behind victory last night, as they beat Mount Vernon Nazarene University 3-2. For the first time in program history, they came back from losing the first two sets to win, giving them a crucial conference victory. The team kicked off their season in January and have currently played nine games. They have a winning record, at 6-3 overall. In conference, they’re...

Student worker wages to rise again
Many student campus employees received a surprise last December when their wages were increased from $7.25 per hour to $8.25. However, raising the minimum wage was only the first step in the college’s plan to offer students a better wage, said David Kendall, director of career networks. A new student wage policy will be fully implemented in the summer of 2022. In it, every campus position will be sorted into one of three tiers according to the skills required, and workers will be compensated accordingly. For example, tier 1 positions are entry level jobs that meet basic abilities. Tier 2...
