In-person commencement to feature John D. Roth
For the first time in two years, seniors will be able to enjoy a commencement ceremony similar to pre-pandemic years. On Sunday, May 1, the class of 2022 will gather in the Recreation-Fitness Center to bring their time as Goshen College students to a close. According to Brian Yoder Schlabach, a member of the Commencement Planning Committee, this year will bring “a return to a ‘normal’ commencement weekend.” One of the biggest changes, compared to last year’s event, is that seniors are allowed to bring guests to the graduation ceremony. With this change, the committee sought to acknowledge Yoder Schlabach...

‘Face Down in the Moment’: A song review
Currently sitting at number one on the Americana Radio Singles Chart, “Face Down in the Moment” comes from the album “The Future” from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. For myself, this song definitely has that classic-country Americana vibe and is a perfect compliment to driving a beat up pickup on a county road at sunset. The simple piano and drum rhythm brings out a reflective tone in the song and serves as a parallel to the last few years in Nathaniel Rateliff’s career, from his solo album “And It’s Still Alright” released in 2020, to the follow-up “The Future”...

Sweeping and sliding on Merry Lea ice
Students and faculty gathered on the ice of Kesling Wetland at Merry Lea on Sunday for the second annual broomball tournament hosted by the Goshen College Outdoor Pursuits Club. Merry Lea has been organizing broomball games for over 15 years. It all started when a student, Lisa Zinn, found out about the game over a decade ago and brought it to the small wetland in Indiana. Broomball is a very simple game and only requires a few items to play: solid ice, a ball, goals and around a dozen old brooms. It is a combination of hockey and soccer. Students...

Nursing department to find new home in Westlawn
As part of Goshen College’s long-term master plan, the second and third floors of Westlawn Dining Hall will soon be the new home for the nursing department. The floors were residential halls in decades past, but now sit dormant. Almost a quarter of GC students major in nursing, making it the largest program at the school, and it is currently filled to capacity in its current home on the 2nd floor of Wyse Hall. Jewel Yoder, head of the nursing department, said when both undergraduate and graduate students are on campus, “the floor is extremely busy and crowded.” Lydia Holsopple,...

GC grad’s dream becomes reality at DreamWorks
Many children have goals that seem impossible or hard to reach, but what happens when those dreams come true? Dianna Campos, who graduated from Goshen College last year, can answer that question. In December 2021, Campos announced she would be working as an Animation Production Intern for DreamWorks starting in Janunary, and that she was “over the moon” to begin her work. Campos is working on an unannounced project in the production process. “I am currently five weeks into my internship, and I honestly cannot believe how much I’ve been learning!” she said. Campos explained how her dream came to...

From non-athlete to record-setter in a year
Breaking school records isn’t on most students’ weekend agendas, but for Samuel Stoner-Eby, it has become a regular occurrence. Last weekend was no exception. On Friday, Jan. 28, the junior crushed Goshen College’s 200-meter record by .56 seconds, with a time of 22.32 seconds. After being converted for the track size, his time was 21.93 seconds, a time that qualified him for the NAIA National Track Championships, held this year in North Dakota. Stoner-Eby was just getting started. Already owning Goshen’s 400-meter record, he broke it again on Saturday with a time of 49.92 seconds. After the conversion, this time...

Sage advice on surviving a frigid winter
Many of you already know how to survive the cold, because quite a few of you are from the Midwest or some other cold-tempered area. However, there are some people out there who have me concerned about their wellbeing. I have seen far too many coatless students roaming through the ice and snow with tennis shoes and not a Carhartt beanie in sight. To those of you who feel as though this description applies to you, listen up. Being a born and raised Midwesterner myself, I feel that I am probably the best person to give out a few tips...

Greg Constantine continues visiting artist legacy
Many visitors come to the Music Center to attend performances in Sauder Concert Hall or Rieth Recital Hall, but another notable stop is the Hershberger Art Gallery. The gallery is currently featuring a collection of works by artist Greg Constantine. The exhibit will be open until March 13. Constantine is a visiting artist with the Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist Program, a memorial for a student artist who attended Goshen College and passed away at the age of 20. The program has hosted visiting artists from around the globe since 1988, but the last artist featured by the program visited...

Geeking out at the library
The Good Library is launching its first-ever Geek Off contest this year, with students, faculty and staff encouraged to express themselves creatively by submitting an artistic piece focused on one of their favorite fandoms. The deadline for submission is Feb. 4 and the winners will be announced a week later on Feb. 11. The top three winners will choose from a prize selection including a Nintendo Switch Lite, a VIP ticket to Elkhart County’s Comic-Con and a ThinkGeek collection box. “People have a lot of talent,” Kelsey McLane, the service specialist for Good Library, said. “We want to present it...

Editor’s Note
The Record published an article “Counting Eggs and Logging Hours at Miller Poultry” on Jan. 20. describing the experience of five Goshen College students who participated in a micro-internship provided through the business department. The article contained statements about Miller Poultry and the students’ experience that were in some cases incomplete and could have been misleading. For example, a vivid quote from one of the interns describing the process of beheading the chickens should have been accompanied by the fact that the chickens are put out painlessly with a gas stunning technique before they are processed. The details in the...

Maldonado’s seven-second dash into the record book
Maria Maldonado can run a 60-meter sprint faster than any runner in Goshen College history. She also holds the GC record for the 200-meter dash in both indoor and outdoor track. A sophomore who moved to Goshen from Venezuela three years ago, Maldonado is determined not to stop there. Maldonado found her love for track at age 13, following in the steps of her father and uncle who both had a gift for running. When she was young, an olympic coach told Maldonado she had the potential to be a great runner; she hasn’t looked back since. “I was like,...

Goshen students shine in Kennedy Center theater festival
Three Goshen College students participated in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Region III Festival over winter break. Dontaye Albert and Fatima Rhana, two first-year theater majors, participated in an acting competition while Sarah Bailey, a sophomore theater and sign language interpreting double major, entered a directing competition. Albert was awarded the Irene Ryan Selection Drama Award, while Bailey directed the winning team in the Design Storm competition. The acting competition included many steps. “You audition with a monologue, and if you make it to the semifinals, you have to do a different monologue and a scene,” Rhana said. “If...

Futsal scores community goals
From Adidas cleats to Vans slip-ons, all shoes are welcome on the futsal turf. All players are welcome, too, from Goshen College athletes to high school students and community members who love the game. With outdoor soccer fields under a layer of snow, the turf room in the GC Recreation-Fitness Center has become a gathering spot for soccer enthusiasts. “We are really trying to invite literally everyone to come play,” said Cormac Koop Liechty, a first-year who is one of the lead organizers for the group. “We know that it’s a lot of fun, and the amount of fun doesn’t...
