Songs and snacks: Chocolate House packed out
Female and nonbinary performers took to the stage at the Chocolate House on Friday evening. At this talent show, male participants are invited to show their support by taking a seat and providing chocolate treats. Chocolate House is set apart from other coffeehouses and open mic nights on campus because of its intent to create an affirming atmosphere for marginalized gender identities who may feel less welcome in other spaces. Therefore, men are limited to a supporting role as audience members. Savannah Roth Walter, a member of the planning committee, made it clear that the committee wants everyone to experience...

Commencement on May 1
A version of this article appeared in The Record on February 10. For the first time in two years, seniors will be able to enjoy a commencement ceremony similar to pre-pandemic years. On Sunday, May 1, the class of 2022 will gather in the Recreation-Fitness Center to bring their time as Goshen College students to a close. According to Brian Yoder Schlabach, a member of the Commencement Planning Committee, this year will bring “a return to a ‘normal’ commencement weekend.” One of the biggest changes, compared to last year’s event, is that seniors are allowed to bring guests to the...

Girl Named Tom Q&A
The band Girl Named Tom won The Voice competition last December. Four months later, they reflect on the experience and share what comes next. Did you explain your Mennonite roots to other contestants on The Voice? Josh: You have to explain the Mennonite roots. People are very intrigued in us since we are a trio — it’s just different. We luckily have a number of things that make us strange: siblings, the homeschool thing and Mennonite thing, and then people associate that with Amish. It’s a great conversation to have with people, we love it every time. Proud of...

Kauffman revitalizes GC yearbook
For years, Leah Kauffman, a senior graphic design major, has wished that Goshen College had a yearbook. This year, she took it upon herself to create one. Goshen College published its first yearbook in 1915. For almost a century, yearbooks provided a record and history of the school. But after the 2012-13 school year, there was insufficient interest and funding to justify continuing the yearbook’s publication, so it was eventually phased out. Kauffman and friends had discussed bringing back the yearbook, but other ideas had always pushed it to the backburner. At the start of this year, that finally changed....

Goshen Printmakers Guild: Home to a vanishing art form
The Goshen Printmakers Guild can be hard to find on a first visit. Tucked in an alleyway between the Art Store and Fables Books in downtown Goshen, the shop’s only sign is a 3×5-inch index card taped to the inside window of the door. Inside, the studio is bright and well lit. Brick walls encapsulate numerous presses and tables, with huge workbenches holding sets of letters in different fonts. Upbeat, modern voices like Lauryn Hill and Lil Nas X ring in the air, and Ida Short, the guild’s ever-enthusiastic caretaker, greets visitors in an apron. There are eight or nine...

In her second year in the position, Polega is a GC and Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) graduate. A day in the life of GC’s athletic trainer
An athlete’s taped ankle or wrist is all most people ever see of Emily Osborne’s work as the associate head athletic trainer. But it’s her work behind the scenes and in the training room that helps Goshen College’s athletes perform at their best on the field, court and track. On a regular practice day, Osborne arrives at the college between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. and doesn’t leave until after 7 p.m. She treats patients one-on-one before team practices, which usually start around 4 p.m. At around 3 p.m, the training room fills with athletes for a variety of pretreatments,...

GC Squirrels express concerns over campus life
Dear Reader, Like you, I have been reading The Record, and like you, I have been disappointed in the Funnies Section this semester. I took it upon myself to prove that not only could the writing be done better, but that the bar was so low it could be written by a computer. The following letter to the editor was written by Artificial Intelligence. There was no human input (although it may have had some squirrel input). Do with that information what you will. I don’t really know what you want from me. Enjoy. — Tyson To the Editors:...

Loewen gives back to GC students
Jesse Loewen, the assistant director of the Academic Success Center on campus, believes that sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make all of the difference. A 2017 Goshen College graduate, Loewen knows what it’s like to struggle in school. Loewen changed majors two times in his first two years as a student at GC. He started as a nursing major, then switched to history and later social work. During his first May term on campus, Loewen’s father was diagnosed with brain cancer and eventually passed away, which took a toll on his mental health and affected his performance on the...

How to prepare for a recital: Music students share their tips
As music students prepare for their end-of-the-year recitals, students and professors share valuable pre-performance advice. All recitals will take place in Rieth Recital Hall. Ainslee Zou (cello), senior music and biochemistry major: I have my senior thesis defense for my biochemistry major before my senior recital. Although there’s a lot of stress surrounding those things, I’m trying to think of both of these things as a culmination and a celebration of my achievements. (Zou’s senior recital will take place April 3 at 7:30 p.m.) Bohan Lin (violin), senior music and business major: Practice. Be humble before the...

Athletic department spotlights mental health
On Monday, over 250 of Goshen College’s student athletes gathered for a conversation about mental health. According to nationwide trends reported by the National Institute of Health (NIH), it’s likely that 50 or more of these student athletes could be struggling with mental illness. The seminar was put on by GC’s athletic department to shine a spotlight on the issue of athlete mental health. In her presentation, Erica Albertin, Goshen’s athletic director, shared more statistics from the NIH: An average of one in five people across the United States report difficulties with mental illness, and those aged 18-25 have the...

The men ended the season with an overall record of 20-9 and an even 7-7 record in the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference (WHAC). The home game was preceded by a time to honor the program’s nine graduating seniors. This group has seen the program through its four years of existence since the sport was added just three years ago in 2019. Before recognizing the seniors, Lauren Ford, the...
