‘Fully family friendly’ opera opens on Friday
Friday Opera is back at Goshen College as “Hansel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck is set to open this weekend Friday at 7:30 p.m. Though based on a well-known fairytale, this show is anything but simple. Employing larger-than-life props, whimsical costumes and giant puppets, Amy Budd, director, said that the show seeks to create the atmosphere of a children’s pop-up book. The childish theme doesn’t mean that this show is taking its work any less seriously than any other show at GC. One facet of the cast is a four person team of puppeteers whose entire focus is on the...

Beating the end of semester burnout
As we feel the endless waves of disdain towards the horrible trudging of this long semester coming to a close, we also see the students on the Goshen College campus showing their unique but fun ways to cope with their piling workloads. In order to avoid the infamous “burnout,” our students implement ways to keep themselves motivated, and most importantly, “locked in” to their work. Just yesterday, the warmest day in a while, instead of studying for finals students were playing sand volleyball, boosting their shrinking spirits! Walking to class, you could see some students carrying a Nintendo Switch...

Springtime in the States: An allergic reaction to optimism
Spring is an amazing time of year. New opportunities, new life, and new optimism are in the air, alongside some trends that don’t quite make sense to me as an international student. Coming from Ireland, I arrived in the United States in order to pursue my academic and athletic careers in better weather than the Emerald Isle is infamous for, or so I thought. It doesn’t quite make sense to me how one day there can be a tornado warning and the next day the weather can so nonchalantly switch to clear skies and sunshine. I have come to realize...

Library comes alive at night
When the last light in the Good Library is extinguished and the doors are locked, the books push their covers against one another. Slowly but surely, they wiggle their way off the shelves, spread their covers and fly, with glorious inhibition. Nary a sound they make, save for the pleasant rustle of their pages. Fly, little books. Fly and be free. The rolling chairs spin and perambulate the carpeted floors. Without human intervention, they’re restricted to the floor they’re found on (rolling chairs aren’t the best at taking the stairs). Which is better: to be a hard-working, blue-collar chair that...

Ask Miss Maple
Dear Miss Maple, Lately, I’ve been having some problems with my roommate, Barnabus. Barney and I were really good friends last year, and thought it made perfect sense to room together this year. So far, however, the roommate situation has not gone to play. For starters, Barney doesn’t clean up after himself. His clothes are all over the floor, and he frequently orders pizza and just leaves the boxes on the ground. I’m pretty sure there’s mold on some of them, and an ant colony may be forming. Barney has yet to do any laundry, and his socks are exuding...

Some expert tips for the frosh (from a wise soph)
Oh, freshman year. A time of excitement and opportunity. A time when nothing quite feels real and you always have the excuse, “I’m just a freshman.” A time when you realize just how much you’d take seeing a crockpot on the counter at your mom’s house over whatever the Rott is serving. Ana and I (and our friends) were on a bit of a rollercoaster ride our first year. Here are some things we wish someone had told us when we were new: 1.Don’t set your expectations for community bathrooms too high. I was naive and assumed that by living...

Goshen College: “I thought it was a Catholic School.”
When I was little, I was certain I knew what a Mennonite was. A Mennonite was that small, evil Kirby thing with wings and a sword. Oh wAiT that’s Meta Knight. Just kidding. I had no idea what a Mennonite was. However, after going to church for a bit, enough knowledge got bonked into my skull that I now have a reasonable understanding of what Mennonites are (hint: not Amish). From what I gathered, Mennonites have three main things that separate them from everyone else. Pacifism: Mennonites love a good ‘ol pacifistic approach to life. This includes conflict de-escalation or...

After 68 years, GC gets a mascot
Goshen College announced a new mascot on Monday morning: for the first time in GC athletic history, the Maple Leafs will officially be led by a black squirrel. Since men’s basketball had their first intercollegiate competitions in 1954, there has never been an official mascot, according to Tony Miller, sports information director. The mascot search committee settled on this decision after a multi-year selection process. The committee was composed of staff from the athletic department, theater department, advancement office, communications and marketing office, institutional research, admissions and the office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as student athletes. The...

GC hires four new faculty members
Next year, there will be some new faces at the front of classrooms. Goshen College has hired four new faculty members in the departments of religion, sustainability, Master of Social Work (MSW), biology and nursing. Luke Kreider, currently a lecturer of Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School, will join the faculty in a unique joint position, dividing his time between the religion, justice and society department and the sustainability department. Kreider said he is “interested in the connections between peace, justice and sustainability issues.” Kreider’s area of research ties together some of the interdisciplinary causes of climate change, and he...
