Communication students win broadcasting awards
Goshen College broadcasting students Riley Friesner and Kadie Spoor won awards from the Broadcasting Education Association’s 2020 Festival of Media Arts, earning them a spot at an awards ceremony and conference in Las Vegas in April. Friesner, a senior, won first place for best on-air personality and an award of excellence in the PSA/promotional/commercial category. Spoor, a junior, received an award of excellence in the best on-air personality category and is this year’s recipient of the $3,000 BEA Abe Voren Scholarship Award. Students attend Pacers careers fair and Nets game
On Monday Feb. 10, a group of Goshen College students boarded a minivan at 7 a.m. driven by Jason Saumel, general manager of Globe Radio and assistant professor of communications. The group of twelve headed to Indianapolis for the 20th Annual Pacers Sports and Entertainment Career Fair. The day began with “Inside the Front Office'' sessions, starting with a marketing presentation from Greg Rapaport, the digital marketing manager for the Indiana Pacers, and Shayna Sangster, director of marketing for Indiana Fever. New communication center to open in 2020
After decades of separation, the on-air studio for 91.1FM The Globe, WGCS; Globe TV; and The Record will be reunited in a new communication center. The programs will be housed in the west wing of the Newcomer Center on the south end of Goshen College’s campus. Renovations are due to begin in the winter of this year and the center is set to open in August of 2020. The move will provide a central hub for communication students who are currently spread out around the Goshen College campus as they work within their co-curriculars. Newspaper, radio win big in Indianapolis
It was a thrilling weekend for The Record as the weekly newspaper scored the Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s Division III “Newspaper of the Year” award for the second consecutive year. This was the third time in four years that The Record received this recognition. The award, which is given to weekly college newspapers with a student population of less than 3,000, was given to The Record in response to the 34 awards received by staff, writers and photographers who participated in The Record last year. GC broadcasting students rack up more awards
Goshen College students have received six awards from the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts, a yearly national competition of all colleges and universities in the United States with media and broadcasting programs. Media and Marketing Program offers insight to GC students and Faculty
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, Career Networks and Goshen College’s communication department hosted The Great Media and Marketing Meet-Up, an event that allowed students and faculty to listen to guest speakers share their career experiences. The evening began with a meal prepared by AVI Fresh. It proceeded with Career Networks coordinator David Kendall introducing Marshall King, adjunct professor of communication and host for the evening’s program. Broadcasting students win awards
Members of The Correspondent, The Globe and FiveCore Media travelled down to Indianapolis to attend the the Indiana Association of Schools Broadcasters (IASB) annual awards luncheon. Both the television and radio station teams won a total of 18 awards from the 15 audio and visual categories that were available. About 25 projects were submitted from work done on the television news program, The Correspondent, FiveCore Media, which is GC’s video production company, as well as on the campus radio station, WGCS 91.1 The Globe. GC publications bring home first, third place
The Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s (ICPA) annual convention proved to be yet another award-winning year for Goshen College’s newspaper, The Record, and literary magazine, Red Cents. The publications, both student-run, won a total of 34 awards, the most prestigious being The Record’s “Newspaper of the Year” award. Student journalists win ICPA awards
A total of 27 Goshen College students received awards at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s annual conference for literary magazine and newspaper awards on April 8. The Record took home the second place award in the “Newspaper of the Year” competition amongst Indiana colleges in the Division III. The Record is in Division III, which puts it in competition with other colleges and universities with an enrollment under 3,000. The Communication Department announced the new co-curricular leaders of The Correspondent, FiveCore Media, The Globe and The Record for 2017-18. Becoming a co-curricular leader within the communication department is an opportunity for students to gain leadership experience within the communication field. Students can apply what they have learned in their classes to create, organize and manage the production of newspaper, film, news magazine or radio-broadcasting. ‘Write on sports’ camp returns
For two weeks out of the summer, middle school students from all over Elkhart County have the opportunity to come to Goshen College to be sports journalists. From July 10-21, students going into seventh or eighth grade next fall are invited to participate in the Write on Sports camp. Led by three certified teachers (two from Goshen Middle School and one from Concord Elementary) and three Goshen College student interns, students get the chance to interview guest athletes and write stories on a deadline. Goshen College’s communication department took home gold from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) awards, as well as the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) awards. Over spring break, representatives from Goshen College’s radio station 91.1 FM The Globe traveled to New York City on Saturday to receive awards from IBS. Waidelich and Birky preparing for next year’s Record

The communication department has selected the new co-curricular leaders for FiveCore Media, the Correspondent and the Globe. The new positions in the Correspondent include Tim Litwiller, a sophomore, as programmer; Karina Flores, a junior, as news director; and Dalton Shetler, a junior, as operations manager. Like many of the Goshen College Communications programs, the Correspondent is a nationally recognized program that is produced and lead by GC students.
