Nuestras historias highlights Latino journey
Goshen College hosted the inaugural Nuestras historias event last week, a look at the journeys of Latino professionals in the media and communication industries. The event featured panels, a keynote address, music and refreshments. Lily Herrera, a sophomore broadcasting major, was one of the panel members and was eager to be a part of the event. “I was really interested because we never really talked about such a niche thing before,” Herrera said. “We are a Hispanic-Serving Institution, but we never talked about Hispanics in broadcasting, so I thought it’d be really cool to be a part of it.” Herrera...

Hufford works with Youth Olympians
Earlier this semester, Kyle Hufford, professor of communication at Goshen College, spent three weeks working as part of a team to lead film workshops at the Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea. The Youth Olympics are for athletes 15-18 years old, and the games occur on the same year as the adult Olympics — albeit with opposite Games. For instance, the Winter Youth Olympics were this year, and the Summer Olympics are in Paris later this year. Given the age range, participants in the Youth Olympic Games only get to partake in this event once. The young athletes participated...

Radio students get real-world experience
Interviewing people who talk for four or more hours per day isn’t the most difficult task in the world. They’ve got a lot to say. “I’m a quote machine,” said Jason Samuel, associate professor of communication and general manager of WGCS. “Don’t mess. Have I sold you yet?” Goshen College’s communication department is not all talk. Three broadcasting students, Dante Stanton, Amelia (Lee) Turnbull and Mike Murrell, have taken the real-world experience offered by the communication department to the next level, as they’re employed at radio stations and television channels before finishing their degrees. According to Samuel, GC’s awarded, dependable...

Junior accounting major Caleb Shenk serves as digital editor, and on Wednesday nights he works on copy editing, page layout and the crossword. “With my internship, I’ve been unable to write as much as I would have liked...

Double trouble with the McDonalds
In September of 2021, Alyssa H. McDonald visited Goshen College for the first time. While chatting with Duane Stoltzfus in the Newcomer Center, she met Alyssa M. McDonald. Alyssa H. didn’t think much of it at the time, but now, a year and a half later, having two Alyssa McDonalds in the same school is causing more than a little confusion. Not only do they attend the same college, both of the McDonalds are in the communications department. Alyssa H. McDonald is a freshman journalism major, mother and works independently for a nonprofit. To her, the best part of the...

New website launched for The Record
The Record launched a new website today after months of designing and digital troubleshooting. The new site is the product of a joint effort between Goshen College students and LightBox, a local design firm founded by Goshen College alumni. It replaced the newspaper’s original website, created in 2008, which had become inconsistent and hard to navigate over the years. “One of the biggest issues with any student-produced product is the brain drain that occurs,” said Jordan Graber Kauffman, one of the founders of LightBox. “The knowledge base disappears as people graduate, which we hope this new website will help address...
