Heavenly Light debuts in Umble
Last weekend, Goshen College’s theater department presented their first fall performance of the year with Barbara Lindsay’s play Heavenly Light. Lindsay’s play takes place in a dystopian-like world and follows freedom fighter Lucinda Celeste, who goes on a journey toward self-discovery and reclaiming one’s voice. “Even when things are hard … and she is broken … she is still finding good in the world,” said Abigail Greaser, the director of the play. This is Lindsay’s second time winning the Goshen Peace Play award, a contest surrounding peace. The winning play is performed each year, but due to COVID-19, Heavenly Light...

Men and women’s soccer celebrate conference wins
Saturday proved to be a day full of celebration and record-setting performances for the Goshen College men’s and women’s soccer teams. Over the Homecoming Weekend, both teams earned shutouts and their first conference wins of the season. The men’s team played under the lights on Saturday night and topped the University of St. Francis Cougars (IN) 3 to 0 with goals by first-year Lars Razor and seniors Lucas Bontreger and Wendo Kisila. Bontreger’s insurance goal in the second half was his fifth of the season, tying him with Razor for the team’s leading scorer. Goalkeeper Matias da Fonesca made six...

New campus entrance opens
A new campus entrance on 10th Street opened Tuesday. The new entrance is the first part of an initiative to restructure the campus over the next couple of decades. When President Rebecca Stoltzfus was appointed to a second term last spring, she proposed a master plan to improve the college in four areas. Her goals include improving campus boundaries, livening the heart of campus, expanding the health and science departments and providing more academic programs for students. The master plan, which was approved by the board of directors, will cost $76 million, most of which will come from donations and...

Cross country breaks records at Louisville Classic
The Goshen College men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Kentucky this past weekend to run in the 20th Annual Louisville Cross Country Classic. Competing in the Blue Race division, season-best and career-best records were shattered by numerous GC athletes and the teams returned home in high spirits. Head coach Rustin Nyce said, “Louisville is always a big opportunity for us to compete against many of the best regional teams.” “In the past, we have felt like we had already run our best races, but we are now starting to put some...

Men’s cross country 22nd in nation
The Goshen College men’s cross country team ran over a minute faster at their race last Friday, Sept. 24, than they did at this time last year. For a team seeking to continue its two-year streak of qualifying NAIA for the National Championship, that is a good sign. Goshen’s top five runners (Nelson Kemboi, Liam Elias, Jackson Steinmetz, Jordan Garlinger, and Edwin Kimutai) covered the 8-kilometer course at their second meet of the season in Findlay, Ohio, in a combined 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 39 seconds. “That’s not just a little faster,” said Rustin Nyce, head coach for the...

2021 tennis season wrap-up
Both the Goshen College men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up their seasons this week. The men’s team finished 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the conference, while the women’s side ended the season 0-15. Evan Atkinson, head coach, said, “This was probably one of the most enjoyable teams I’ve ever coached.” “Our team is enthusiastic and passionate,” he said. “When I say team, I speak of both our men’s and women’s units because even though we compete separately, we are one family.” The two groups practiced, traveled, ate, and laughed together, all while supporting and encouraging each other throughout a...

Letter to the editor
To the editor of “Erica’s Cuisine Corner,” As someone who has had my fair share of cereal, ranging from name-brand cereal to the now presumably extinct Tootie Frooties, I could not sit idly by as you bench the best cereals in the game only to praise Fruity Dyno Bites—a B-Tier cereal at best. Just like a store-bought banana, Fruity Dyno Bites will only be good and primed to eat for about 2.46 seconds before they become a mess, just like the Frosted Mini Spooners you criticized. Even when I can slurp the cereal part, I’m left with milk that...

Liam’s picks: The top 10 Globe tracks of fall 2021
Hello, readers! I’m Liam, and I’m the music director at 91.1 The Globe this year. Part of my job is to pick out new tunes and add them to the system. I’ve only been doing this for a month now, but I’ve stumbled across several gems already. Without further ado, here are my favorite fall additions to the Globe music library: “Danger” by AHI (pronounced EYE): I had never heard of this indie-soul singer until Jason Samuel, associate professor of communication, sent me this track. I appreciate AHI’s raw, stripped-down sound. “Better Be Lonely” by Samantha Fish: Fish...

Men’s soccer team closes the gap
Although early in the season, the men’s soccer team has already shown improvement from last year. In the 2020 season, The Maple Leaf Men’s Soccer team won zero games, posting a 0-5-3 record. As the team prepares for conference play, they have improved to 4-3-3, already winning more games than they did in their COVID-19 season. Senior Tristan Smucker explained how the team is “hungry” to prove themselves in the crossroads league and how being an underdog is something that the team looks to embrace. “The guys and I are all super excited for conference,” said Smucker, “We have the feeling...

Turning a school bus into a colorful mobile home
Lee Bergey may be in their third year of college, but they still take the bus to school. The purple school bus parked behind the Romero Student Apartments is the ongoing project of Bergey, an art and sustainability studies double major, who has been converting the bus into a mobile home for the past nine months. The bus is the realization of one of Bergey’s lifelong dreams. “I always wanted to live in some sort of mobile home,” they said. “I just want the lifestyle of being able to move around and go where I’m needed and not be attached...

Cathy Stoner becomes new campus pastor
Goshen College welcomed Cathy Stoner to the role of campus pastor on Tuesday. Stoner took over the position from Joanne Gallardo, who had held it since 2019. Stoner received the position after an extensive hiring process that began over the summer. The process culminated with Stoner’s presentation at the first chapel of the semester. Stoner interacted with students and faculty at the event and, after a period for feedback, the search committee offered Stoner the position. Stoner graduated from Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary last May with a Masters of Divinity degree. She has lived in the South Bend area for...

New website launched for The Record
The Record launched a new website today after months of designing and digital troubleshooting. The new site is the product of a joint effort between Goshen College students and LightBox, a local design firm founded by Goshen College alumni. It replaced the newspaper’s original website, created in 2008, which had become inconsistent and hard to navigate over the years. “One of the biggest issues with any student-produced product is the brain drain that occurs,” said Jordan Graber Kauffman, one of the founders of LightBox. “The knowledge base disappears as people graduate, which we hope this new website will help address...
