Adult English language classes remain as popular as ever
The list of words written on the board in Newcomer 14 reads: fridge, note, appointments, shopping list. At the classroom tables, four adult students are bent over their books, fiercely concentrating as they complete an exercise in matching sentences to pictures. These students in Goshen College’s Adult English Language Class, are part of an endeavor which has recently seen high demand from the greater Goshen community. With locations at Goshen College and Ivy Tech Community College, the classes are the largest they have ever been in their five-year lifespan. To accommodate the need, six levels of classes are offered in...

Nursing welcomes Sister Veronica
This fall, Sister Veronica Adeduro is beginning her first year of teaching as an assistant professor of nursing at Goshen College. She is the first nun to teach at GC. Adeduro is from Nigeria, where she worked as a registered nurse for many years. She later went on to serve as a missionary in Germany for five years before making the move to the United States. Adeduro shared that “the joy of working in different places is that it makes the people in those places real to me.” She added one thing she has found that all people have in...

Composting inactive for a second year
In-person convocation and chapel, free coffee in the library and DIY waffles are back. But one pre-COVID campus staple has yet to see a rebound: composting. The composting operation that once kept food waste from the dining hall out of the landfill was suspended over a year ago due to safety concerns around COVID-19 and new dining practices. But this fall, students are noticing its absence. “It is surprising to see how nothing is really happening,” said Jackson Steinmetz, a junior who volunteered with the composting initiative in the past. “All of the first and second-years have never seen composting...

Mishler’s part in a paralympic gold medal
Sam Grewe, a highly decorated high jumper, a three-time World Champion, a world record holder and, most recently, a Tokyo 2021 Paralympic gold medalist, is a familiar name to some at Goshen College. Coached by Kyle Mishler, track and field assistant coach, Grewe has done much of his training at GC. “Sam had a family connection to former GC high jumper Don Williams,” Mishler said. “Sam started para track and field in 2015 and Don brought him to the indoor facility to practice, which is where we first met.” Grewe contracted osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, at just 13...

Erica’s Cuisine Corner: Rott Cereal
In a life full of turbulence and change, few things remain steady. Of those constants, the noblest is undoubtedly a bowl of cereal. Nobody knows this better than college students. We appreciate the many uses, including (but not limited to) a low-effort meal, post-workout treat, dessert, or midnight snack to briefly alleviate the crushing stress of an imminent project deadline. Luckily, the Rott is always here with its unending supply of nutritionally dubious grain. That being said, the folks at Westlawn are constantly switching up the rotation. The cereal section has a solid lineup that varies throughout the year, so...

Ghost Hunters: GC Edition
Last week, I debuted my journalistic skills in the news section of The Record. This week, I have decided to flex my growing investigative skills in a new area: ghost hunting. At the request of an anonymous advanced ceramics student here at Goshen College, I have set my sights on the ghost that this person claims haunts the art building. You may be thinking to yourself, “What ghost?” I, too, was skeptical. I’d never heard of an art building ghost. My source, however, was convinced. They described the strange sounds heard in the basement studio regularly: banging, rattling, ‘thumps’ in...

County Council votes against applying for CDC grant
The Elkhart County council elected to deny health education for it’s marginalized communities when it voted not to apply for a CDC grant at the council meeting last Saturday. The grant, offered by the national Center for Disease Control, would have provided $995,698 to train and deploy up to six new health workers to promote education about chronic diseases among local Latino, Black and Amish communities. Instead, council members chose to preserve what they saw as freedom from government overreach. “I think the grant is a social justice issue,” said Gilberto Perez Jr. who attended the meeting where the decision...

Arts on the Millrace features local artists
Goshen Arts and Events hosted the annual Arts on the Millrace this weekend on Saturday. Upon arrival at Powerhouse Park, live music led the way to the trail of artist booths. Event coordinator and Goshen College alum Adriene Nesbitt founded the event in 2014 as a “way to get artists excited about living in Goshen.” Nesbitt works as the Director of Events at Eyedart Creative Studio located in Goshen. Last year, the event was held solely online due to COVID-19. Nesbitt expressed excitement about the return to normalcy: “We were happy to be back in person; art sells a lot...

Four generations travel across the country by bike
Dan Eash Scott, a sophomore history and social work double major, biked across the United States with his father and younger brother this summer. His grandpa rounded off the intergenerational crew by driving the support vehicle. The trip was inspired by another experience that happened exactly 20 years ago, in 2001. After graduating from Goshen college, Eash Scott’s father biked across the United States with his friend to visit and attend a game at every MLB stadium. The idea of reviving the trip 20 years later was appealing to Eash Scott because he had always wanted to go on a...

Women’s volleyball turns over a new leaf
After a grueling 2020 season filled with adversity and COVID-19 interruptions, the Goshen College women’s volleyball team’s record stood at 0-15. Fast forward a year later, and the team already has three wins under their belts with more than half the season left to play. Head coach Kourtney Crawford said, “I’m excited about the improvement that my team has made, from this season to last.” “It is a major turn around, but I’m not satisfied with just improving,” she said. During the off-season, Crawford focused heavily on recruiting kids that were just as passionate about the sport as she is....

Women in STEM club makes a comeback
The Goshen College Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) club is seeking to boost activity and membership this semester after a hiatus last year. The club is currently led by three students: Ainslee Zou, a senior biochemistry and music double major; Gretta Rempel, a junior biology major; and Lauren Murphy, a sophomore biology major. Zou says that the mission of Women in STEM is “to promote growth in an inclusive, supportive and trusted environment for diverse and underrepresented voices in the [STEM] community.” “Our main goal is inclusion,” Zou said. “So even though we are the ‘Women in...

ResLife reinforces dry-campus policies
Residential students received an email about recent violations of GC’s dry campus rules from Residence Director Emily Hahn on Sept. 10. The email primarily focused on student’s alcohol consumption and stated that alcohol use “on campus and/or while underage is a violation of our community standards.” The message encouraged students to review the standards and think about the impact and consequences of their actions. According to Hahn, the motivation behind the email was twofold. It was partially due to increased reports of alcohol consumption on campus. “There were a lot of conversations,” she said, “a lot of people talking...

GC welcomes Endah Setyowati from Indonesia
Goshen College is welcoming Endah Setyowati, a visiting global scholar from Duta Wacana Christian University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to campus this year. Setyowati is the third professor from Duta Wacana Christian University to become a visiting global scholar at Goshen College. “They asked me to apply for the position as an Indonesian professor at Goshen,” she said, “but I don’t know… I’m like, I’m not so young anymore! Why don’t you ask the younger professors?” Despite her initial hesitancy, Setyowati eventually applied for and received the position. She is now teaching two courses: Indonesian I, a language and culture class...
