24 hour World College Radio Day
At midnight on Friday, World College Radio Day began. World College Radio Day is an annual event that celebrates college and high school radio stations. On the day, all participating stations are on air for 24 hours straight. Listeners are encouraged to tune in and foster awareness for these radio stations and their role in promoting independent, diverse and local content. This year, 604 stations participated in World College Radio Day. One of these stations to take part was 91.1 The Globe, the student-run station of Goshen College. There are currently nine paid student positions on the station staff. Two...

Best on-air personality, Kadie Daye
Kadie Daye, Goshen College alumna from the class of 2021, has been a “radio geek” since she was eight years old. She remembers sitting in the car with her mom, listening to various radio stations and passionately mimicking them. “I would do the jingles alongside the hosts, and every time they went to music, I would actually switch to the next station just to hear them talk some more,” she said. This early fascination with radio sparked her passion, which has only grown over the years. Daye, a former broadcasting and marketing double major, left a “secured legacy” at GC,...

Students from The Globe and FiveCore Media received 18 individual awards across the three competitions. 91.1 The Globe was named Radio Station of the Year among institutions with enrollments under 3,000 students by the College Media Association. This is the first organizational Pinnacle Award for The Globe and the station’s fifth national title. Jason Samuel, associate professor...

Globe Radio named Best in Nation
Goshen College’s radio station, 91.1FM The Globe (WGCS), won best college station in the nation (enrollment under 10,000) this year for the fourth time since 2011. The Globe staff also won first place for the best use of YouTube, and two upperclassmen, Courtney Templeton and Jeremiah Sherrill, won first place for best news report. These first-place prizes come from 17 nominations The Globe received from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems (IBS) awards. “We couldn’t do it without Jason Samuel,” said Seth Smith Kauffman, one of the nominees for the IBS awards. Samuel is the faculty advisor for The Globe. “Jason listens...

Driven by young talent, Globe Media receives 19 nominations
Globe Media is looking for another dominant year in the annual Intercollegiate Broadcast Systems (IBS) awards. On top of that, 91.1FM The Globe (WGCS) received its twelfth-straight Best College Radio Station nomination. For the individual nominations, GC students are going up against colleges of all types, from large schools like Indiana University to more selective schools like Northwestern University. Jason Samuel, general manager for Globe Media and associate professor of communication, said that he is “ecstatic with our representation within the...

A link stronger than radio waves
Two booming voices embody the broadcasting major experience for students at Goshen College: the voices of Paul Condry, president and founder of Regional Radio Sports Network (RRSN) and Jason Samuel, assistant professor of communication. RRSN, a broadcasting company based in Mishawaka, Indiana, provides coverage of student athletic events throughout Northern Indiana, including Crossroads League events, and their connection with Goshen College goes beyond the playing field. GC’s very own radio station, 91.1 The Globe, is one of the places one can tune in to RRSN, with their weekly sports show, “The Coaches Box,” on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. and Penn...

The Globe receives first-time nomination
For the first time in its history, Goshen College’s 91.1 The Globe has been named a College Media Association Pinnacle Award finalist for Four-Year Radio Station of the Year in the broadcasting category. In addition to the radio station award, nine students and 2020 graduates are up for individual CMA awards. Kadie Daye, Benjamin Cotton, Nathan Pauls, Bryce Stopher, William Troyer, Alyson Prigge, Jeremiah Sherrill, Tanner Camp and Riley Friesner are all CMA finalists. In a year where news is abundant, but covering it is more challenging, Jason Samuel, the Globe general manager, is proud of the work coming out...

Newspaper, radio win big in Indianapolis
It was a thrilling weekend for The Record as the weekly newspaper scored the Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s Division III “Newspaper of the Year” award for the second consecutive year. This was the third time in four years that The Record received this recognition. The award, which is given to weekly college newspapers with a student population of less than 3,000, was given to The Record in response to the 34 awards received by staff, writers and photographers who participated in The Record last year. The semesters included in this year’s ICPA contest were spring 2018, when 2018 graduate Emily...

WGCS celebrates 60 years of passion for radio
WGCS radio, also known as 91.1 FM The Globe, started in the 1940s at Goshen College with a shoddy transmitter, a lot of copper wire and a small group of passionate communicators. It is now celebrating its 60th anniversary as one of the most successful college radio stations in the country. Laura Hoover, a senior broadcasting major and current station manager at The Globe, loves to tell the story of how WGCS was born. In 1952, the Goshen College broadcasting experiment, which had already been broadcasting chapels and other campus events for years, became a bit too successful. “Someone left...

Jason Samuel: a life on the mic
Jason Samuel’s love for radio started when he was in elementary school. While in the Cub Scouts, his troop (led by Samuel’s mom) went on a field trip to WIOQ, a top 40 radio station in Philadelphia. On the field trip, Samuel’s troop was able to go to all parts of the radio station including the on-air studio and production studio. Samuel said that the field trip that day confirmed his love for radio. “That really had a profound impact on me,” he said, “and I thought, ‘Man, I would love to do this for my life.’” Born and raised...

The Globe recognized at annual IBS convention
Already a familiar face at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS), Goshen College’s own WGCS The Globe was represented with twelve finalist nominations and two first place awards last weekend at the 76th Annual IBS convention in New York City. Out of 6,000 entries from across the nation, one school getting twelve finalist nominations out of the 115 colleges represented at the IBS convention is, at the very least, “atypical.” Because of the size and level of student involvement with WGCS The Globe, the ability of Goshen to compete with larger schools is incredible and something for Goshen to be proud...

Goshen College’s Performing Arts Series welcomes radio host Ira Glass
On Saturday March 19, Ira Glass, creator and host of the public radio show “This American Life,” will bring his talents to Sauder Concert Hall. The event, titled “Reinventing Radio: An Evening with Ira Glass,” is an exciting addition to Goshen College’s Performing Arts Series Beginning at 7:30 p.m., Glass will host a talk discussing his radio program and the process through which it was created. In the simplest explanation of the show, the program sticks to a weekly theme around which stories are compiled and then aired. These shows, however, cannot be categorized as news or even as a...

The Globe wins ‘Best Audio DJ,’ ‘Best Newscast’
Several weeks ago, Goshen College’s 91.1 The Globe (WGCS) and its students were nationally recognized at the College Broadcasting, Inc. National Student Radio Productions Awards in Minneapolis. Danielle Kerschhackl, a senior broadcasting and ASL double major from Elmwood Park, IL, came home with the award for “Best Audio DJ.” Kerschhackl credits her success to the hands-on experience with the radio station since the beginning of her first year. “I didn’t have to be an upperclassman to get experience—my first year I was on air and getting experience,” said Kerschhackl. “This is a unique part of Goshen College, their broadcasting program...

The Globe gets an upgrade
The support of members and listeners alike pays off as 91.1 FM the Globe enters a new era with upgraded broadcasting equipment that will expand coverage of live events, including sports and concerts. In the language of technicians, broadcasters will now provide live coverage with the Tieline i-Mix G3 Mixer/Codec, with remote broadcasting done via Verizon 4G LTE data through a Pantech modem and a Cradlepoint router. What that means as the new school year unfolds is that broadcasts for 91.1 the Globe, which has already been named the best college radio station in the U.S., will have a clearer,...
