GC softball and baseball spring preseason review
2014-2015 Baseball team Goshen’s baseball and softball teams traveled for sunny skies over spring break, with the baseball team heading down to Florida, and the softball team going to California. The trips marked the first time either team was able to be outside since the fall. The baseball team ended their break by winning 2 out of 6 games, and the softball team ended theirs with a record of 0-9 to start to the season. The baseball team got off to a fast start, whipping Warner University 9-2, with sophomore Michael Walker pitching a complete game, surrendering only 4 hits...

Baseball begins over Break
While most students will be spending their spring break relaxing, it will be business as usual for the Goshen baseball team. The Maple Leafs’ season begins during spring break and they will see 10 games across Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. 12 members of the roster are new to the team, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be called upon to perform. When asked about the new additions, Head Coach Alex Childers said, “Half of our team is new this year. We have 2 transfers and 10 first-years on this year’s squad. We are expecting the new guys to have a...

Crossing borders with baseball: Ryan Hartig
”Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball,” says Jacques Barzun, a philosopher of education. Many people have claimed that baseball has played a big role in the unification of America and has formed a large portion of American culture. What many of us don’t understand is that this amazing sport has molded the distinctiveness of people all across the world. One such person is first-year Canadian student, Ryan Hartig. Hartig was born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario—the dairy capital of North America. “My hometown is a lot like Goshen,” says Hartig. He spoke...

Leafs Overpowered by Cougars in Double-Header
Goshen continues to look for their first home victory of the season after a double-header on Tuesday against Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The Cougars defeated the Maple Leafs 12-0 in the first game, and 5-0 in game two. The Cougars jumped on the Maple Leafs pitching throughout game one, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone. They would add four more runs in the third and another in the fourth inning. Cougar first baseman Seth Eller did the most damage, going 3-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Cougar catcher Clint Spencer and second baseman Corey Gould each...

Leafs ride pitching, defense to first win
After a tough start to the season, and having to wait for the weather to cooperate, the Maple Leaf baseball team entered the win column for the first time this season in a win over Marian University on Saturday. The Maple Leafs and the Knights played a double header that saw Marian outlast Goshen in 10 innings, by a score of 6-5 in game one. But in the second game, the Maple Leafs turned the tables and came away with a split in the double header with a 2-1 victory. Trevor Emery and Vincent Caschera provided the necessary offense with...

Put it in the book(s)
The digital revolution has not been kind to dead-tree books. As I’m sure the bookstore has told you several times over, the electronic editions of your favorite literature are cheaper than their bound relatives, not to mention less likely to collect dust and turn yellow with age. But there are some functions of computerization that don’t translate well from the tactile to the touchscreen. It’s April, which means (despite Mother Nature’s evidence to the contrary) that baseball season is beginning—and that brings to mind one such function. I’m referring to the practice of scoring baseball and softball games, which entails...

Shorthanded Leafs look to improve in 2013
If you’re keeping score at home, it’s Mother Nature 4, Maple Leafs 0. Four, as in the number of games (doubleheaders against Lourdes and Concordia) postponed or canceled this spring because of weather. Zero, as in the number of games the Maple Leafs baseball team has played on the baseball diamonds of Michiana since it returned from a spring-break trip to Florida two weeks ago. With the snows of early March placed hopefully behind them, Goshen will attempt to begin its seasons this weekend as baseball hosts Cardinal Stritch University for a three-game series and softball plays host to a...

Baseball: Still America’s Favorite Pastime?
Spring time is soon upon us here in Goshen, and that means three things: the weather will become tolerable (except for the floods of rain), people will actually want to spend time outside (except when it’s raining), and, most importantly to me, baseball will once again be played throughout the U.S. (except, of course, when it’s raining. See a pattern here?) However, as the years pass by, it seems that the tradition of baseball as America’s favorite pastime is quickly, if not already, dashed by the love of another sport: football. Who is to blame America, though? Football is faster,...

Oversen shines as Leafs get first win
After a rough outing in Florida with a number of late-inning losses, the Maple Leafs finally found their stride to grab their first win of the season over Holy Cross College in South Bend on Monday. The Maple Leafs were led by Spencer Oversen, a senior and Goshen native, who scattered five hits in his second career complete-game shutout and struck out three. Meanwhile, Goshen tallied six runs off of 11 hits. The Leafs scored twice in the first inning, while adding single runs to their score in the fourth and fifth innings. A two-run double from left fielder Matt...

Baseball hits skid against top of MCC
After Goshen’s baseball team won four of its first six games, the Maple Leafs hoped that winning streak would continue into Mid-Central Conference play. So far, the winning streak has not continued. But in theory, the baseball schedule can only get easier. The Leafs played the top two MCC teams this week, dropping two games to St. Francis and four to Taylor. Tuesday afternoon, the Leafs’ bats were quiet in a doubleheader at Taylor University. Goshen took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Jose Andrade, a first-year, but Taylor came back to lead 3-1 after an...

Leafs start 0-2 in conference
For any number of college students, the arrival of March blue skies in sun-starved northern Indiana is a reason to go out and play. Last weekend the Goshen baseball team had plenty of chances to do so; in fact, they played six games, winning two. The final pair of games was perhaps the most important, as Goshen traveled to Fort Wayne on Tuesday to open Mid-Central Conference play with a doubleheader at Saint Francis. The host Cougars were victorious in both ends of the twinbill: Chris Howell, a senior, fired a three-hit game for a 3-1 win in the opener...

Behind 15 hits in nightcap, leafs split doubleheader with Concordia nine
Seven innings were not enough for the Goshen College baseball team on Saturday afternoon. With the score tied 6-6 at the end of the scheduled seven innings between the Maple Leafs and Concordia University, the game entered extra innings, where Goshen came away with a 7-6 victory and a doubleheader split. A trio of singles very nearly plated the go-ahead run for Goshen in the top of the eighth inning, but designated hitter Jose Andrade, a first-year, was thrown out at the plate on a single by shortstop Arick Armington, a first-year. Left fielder Garrett Cannizzo, a senior, advanced to...

Twelve runs too few in slugfest
The Goshen College baseball team did something on Tuesday that they hadn’t done since 2010: score a dozen runs. Left fielder Garrett Cannizzo, a senior, was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a career-high six runs batted in. Despite his production, Goshen was unable to muster enough offense Tuesday afternoon, and the Maple Leafs fell 25-12 to Indiana Tech at Warrior Field in Fort Wayne. Catcher Ignatius Mackenzie led the Indiana Tech (9-3) offense to an early 8-0 lead with a first-inning grand slam. His second at bat, was a two-run homer that made the score 10-4; the Warriors led 15-4...

Tough week for Maple Leaf baseball
The Goshen College baseball team played through a tough week of baseball, losing two double headers to the University of Saint Francis Cougars, only to see their non-conference game against Siena Heights canceled due to the weather. Last Thursday, the team headed to Fort Wayne to face off against Mid Central College Conference rival University of Saint Francis in a double header. The first game resulted in a Saint Francis victory with a score of 12-1, with the sole Maple Leaf point coming from a solo homer hit by junior Nick Wesman in the fifth inning. The second game resulted...

Baseball splits six games over three double headers
The Goshen College baseball team competed in three double headers over the past week. The Maple Leafs came out of the six games with a 3-3 record. Last Thursday, April 7, Goshen hosted Indiana Wesleyan and won both games by scores of 8-2 and 2-1. The Leafs traveled to Grace the following Saturday, losing the two contests 1-2 and 3-10. Goshen hosted non-conference opponent Purdue University-North Central on Sunday. The Panther Boilers were victorious in the first outing, 11-0, but The Maple Leafs bounced back in the second with an 11-8 win. On Thursday, against the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats, Goshen...
