The Goshen College baseball team did something on Tuesday that they hadn’t done since 2010: score a dozen runs.
Left fielder Garrett Cannizzo, a senior, was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a career-high six runs batted in. Despite his production, Goshen was unable to muster enough offense Tuesday afternoon, and the Maple Leafs fell 25-12 to Indiana Tech at Warrior Field in Fort Wayne.Catcher Ignatius Mackenzie led the Indiana Tech (9-3) offense to an early 8-0 lead with a first-inning grand slam. His second at bat, was a two-run homer that made the score 10-4; the Warriors led 15-4 after three innings and 23-8 after four.
Cody Drake (1-0) picked up the win after giving up three runs in 2 2/3 innings Ben Diedring (1-1) took the loss. for Goshen (4-5).
On Friday, Mar. 2, Davenport University faced four Goshen pitchers and scored off all of them en route to a 14-4 final.
The day before, pitcher Caleb Yoder, a junior, scatttered six hits in the first six innings of the second game of a doubleheader with Hannibal-LaGrange, a 3-2 loss. A strong relief effort from C.J. Superczynski, a junior, was key in the day’s first game; he allowed just one earned run in 5 1/3 innings, but the Maple Leafs dropped that game 6-2.
Goshen took two games of three from Houghton to start their trip, losing 8-4 before sweeping a doubleheader 9-6 and 8-6.
The Maple Leafs return to the field in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday at Concordia University.
