Goshen continues to look for their first home victory of the season after a double-header on Tuesday against Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The Cougars defeated the Maple Leafs 12-0 in the first game, and 5-0 in game two.
The Cougars jumped on the Maple Leafs pitching throughout game one, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone. They would add four more runs in the third and another in the fourth inning. Cougar first baseman Seth Eller did the most damage, going 3-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Cougar catcher Clint Spencer and second baseman Corey Gould each contributed a pair of RBIs as well.Goshen struggled offensively going 4-23 from the plate as a team in game one. Mount Vernon’s Ben Hoar picked up the win, throwing six strong innings and only giving up three hits. Jacob Tharp picked up an inning of relief for the Cougars.
The Maple Leafs were led offensively by designated hitter Bryan Aponte, a sophomore, who went 2-3. Goshen’s Bryan Palmer, a sophomore, was charged with the loss while both Seth Lapp and Brad Lantz, both first-years, collected several innings of relief each.
In game two, the Maple Leafs played better but unfortunately the end result was the same. As in game one, Mount Vernon’s pitching shut down Goshen’s bats as Roberto Cediel threw a complete game, surrendering only three hits and striking out six. Offensively, third baseman Kenny McCambridge contributed for the Cougars, going 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Clint Spencer added an RBI of his own.
Matt Austin, a junior, got the start for the Maple Leafs and pitched four innings, giving up five unearned runs on six hits. Goshen did themselves no favors by committing four errors in the game that ended up putting it out of reach. Eli Grimes, a first-year, added three innings of relief for Goshen striking out three. The Maple Leafs were 3-23 at the plate. Preston Carr, David Leaman-Miller, first-years, and Paxson Miller, a senior, contributed a hit each for Goshen.
With the losses, Goshen falls to 5-24 overall and 3-14 in the conference. The Maple Leafs will have a chance for revenge as they travel to Mount Vernon on today, April 10, for another double-header with the Cougars.
