The baseball team has been busy playing six seven-inning games in six days, all Mid-Central College Conference contests. The games began last Thursday, March 31 when the Maple Leafs hosted Spring Arbor University for a double-header, only to turn around and travel to Spring Arbor, Michigan on Saturday for another double-header against the same team. The first set of games saw Spring Arbor come away with two wins; the second day saw one win for each team as the Maple Leafs beat Spring Arbor on the last game of the series. Pitcher Omar Hernandez, a senior, contributed to the win,...

Maple Leafs baseball opens MCC play with series against Bethel
The Maple Leafs began conference play with a tough four game series against rival Bethel last weekend. On Friday, March 25 the Leafs traveled to Bethel for the first two games. In game one, the Leafs struggled in the first two innings, surrendering four runs to the Pilots finding themselves in an early hole. While the pitching and defense settled in and did not allow another run to score, the offense never really found their rhythm and managed to push across one run on the Pilots’ pitcher Elliot Rowe, who went all seven innings against the Maple Leafs. The only...

Maple Leafs fall in lead-up to conference play
The Maple Leafs baseball team fell twice at home in a double-header to Grace College in a non-conference matchup on Saturday. The Lancers built up a commanding 8-0 lead early during the first game and never looked back. Goshen managed to mount a three-run rally in the second inning, but that proved to be the only offense the Leafs could muster all day. The Lancers only built on their lead after that, adding three more runs for an 11-3 victory. In game two, the Leafs just couldn’t figure out Lancers’ ace Clifford Buttermore, as the sophomore worked a complete game,...

Maple Leaf baseball in full swing
Last Friday, March 11, the Goshen College baseball team played Manchester College at Manchester. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Goshen but due to weather it was moved. Goshen drops close contests
This past Tuesday, the Goshen College baseball team lost both ends of another close double header to the visiting University of Saint Francis. The Maple Leafs fell 5-4 and 5-2 against the Cougars, and moved to 9-29 overall (3-13) in conference. This defeat came just a day after a 6-5 loss to Defiance College—a game that went back and forth between the Maple Leafs and the Yellow Jackets. Although Goshen eventually lost, they finished the game with fewer errors and more hits. Slow starts have plagued the Maple Leafs all season. In the first two innings this season, Goshen was...

Tough Week for Goshen
Over the past week, the Goshen College baseball team posted a 1-5 record and moved to 9-22 overall (3-7 in conference). The first four of these games were against Huntington, and spanned the course of two days. On Thursday, April 1, the Maple Leafs played the first of two double headers against Huntington. In both contests, Goshen struggled to start their offense, while the Foresters had no trouble getting on the scoreboard. At the end of the day, Huntington picked up 12-1 and 12-5 contests. The second double header, which was played two days later on Saturday the third, was...

Goshen Splits Series with Grace
Baseball conference play began this past Friday as the Leafs took on Grace College in the first of a four-game series. Played at Grace’s Winona Lake campus, the game stayed tight early as the score was tied 2-2 at the end of the third inning. However, in the fourth inning the Leafs took control and never looked back, scoring three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and then six in the seventh. Six different players ended up scoring for the Leafs. They were led by Sean Sears, a senior, who had two runs and three doubles. The men...

Maple Leafs walk off with double header split against SHU
GOSHEN, Ind. – With a much different atmosphere than a typical Tuesday afternoon non-conference double header, the Goshen College baseball team managed to come from behind and take the finale in extra innings as they earned a double header split with visiting Siena Heights University. With media swarming around the Maple Leafs pre-game preparations and an anticipatory crowd gathering, it felt more like postseason action than a final tuneup for Mid-Central College Conference action beginning later in the week. Over 100 were on hand to witness the first-ever playing of the national anthem at a Goshen sporting event and the...

Baseball wins doubleheader against IU-Northwest
The Goshen College baseball team hosted the Indiana University-Northwest Red Hawks on Tuesday in a double header for its first home game of the season. Scoring a total of 24 runs, Goshen captured both ends of the double header with wins of 13-3 and 11-1. The contest was scheduled because a four-game series over the weekend was canceled due to some unfavorable field conditions in Tennessee and Kentucky. Although Goshen pulled out the victory in both contests, it was the Red Hawks who started off strong. In the first game, IU-Northwest scored first and held onto a 3-1 lead going...

Men’s baseball team records first win of season during Spring Break
The Goshen College Men’s baseball team went 2-5 during this year’s annual spring break road trip to Florida. The Maple Leafs played a total of three different teams over the weeklong tour, the first being the Clearwater Christian College Cougars, whom they defeated in a double-header. Although they had trouble getting onto the scoreboard in the first game of that series, Goshen was able to keep the contest close, helped by some great pitching from Senior Aaron Coy. After the first five innings, Coy had six strike outs, and the score was tied 0-0. The Maple Leafs scored two runs...

Cougars prove too powerful in rematch
After losing both games of the double header at Spring Arbor University on Thursday, the Maple Leafs hosted the Spring Arbor Cougars two days later for another double header series with the chance to draw even. Starting Maple Leafs pitcher Jason Crocker, a first year, pitched the entire seven innings, keeping the No. 23 nationally-ranked Cougars mostly at bay. Crocker allowed two earned runs and three overall on seven hits, while striking out four and walking one in a 3-1 loss to the Cougars. The struggling Maple Leafs offense knocked in only two hits during game one. Game two was...

Baseball breaks eight game losing streak
Goshen College baseball entered a doubleheader on Tuesday looking to end their eight game losing streak. The Maple Leafs succeeded not once, but twice in 4-2 and 8-2 wins over Indiana University Northwest at Goshen College. The starting time of the first game was moved forward to 1 p.m. in an effort to avoid the predicted rain showers that were approaching. Once the first game was underway, starting pitcher Aaron Keister gave up one run in the top of the first inning, but the Maple Leafs took control with a three run first inning and never looked back. The Leafs...

Curve ball breaks Doering, Leafs lose
The Goshen College baseball team continued a battle with injuries against Davenport University on Thursday as Sean Doering was hit in the face with a pitch during his at-bat in the first inning. “It was a curve ball that didn’t break,” said Doering, a sophomore. “I went back to the training room and noticed my nose was bleeding. When I started feeling lightheaded and dizzy, they sent me to the hospital for X-rays.” X-rays showed that Doering had injured two bones in his nose and cheek, sidelining him for the next week and the start of Mid-Central Conference play. After...

Leafs and Eagles split double header
With the Three Days Grace hit song “Riot” blaring over the loud speaker, the Maple Leafs baseball team rushed onto the field on Saturday for their first home game of the season. Originally scheduled to play ball in Kentucky against Berea College, Goshen College was faced with a cancellation due to heavy rain. As the third canceled game in a row, the others being against Concordia University and Asbury College, the Leafs’ head coach Josh Keister was determined his team would see weekend action. “I probably called every school within a five hour radius of here,” said Keister. “I had...
