GC broadcasting students rack up more awards
Goshen College students have received six awards from the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts, a yearly national competition of all colleges and universities in the United States with media and broadcasting programs. Award winners ‘Buck’ and ‘Walter’ navigate life together again
Being a Buckwalter means loving coffee, being passionate about teaching and driving a car from Buckwalter Motors. Or so it would seem after getting to know Renee and Anne Buckwalter, twin seniors from Wellman, Iowa. Recently, another similarity has appeared: Renee and Anne are both being honored by the Indiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Education with the Outstanding Future Educator Award. Renee, the younger twin by 31 minutes, is an elementary education major who student taught kindergarten at West Goshen Elementary School. Globe media nominated for major awards – New brand to be unveiled next week
91.1 The Globe has been named a finalist for the “Best College Station in the Nation” award for the ninth consecutive year. Alumni recognized in annual awards convocation
This past Friday served host to the 2018 Alumni Awards convocation during Homecoming Weekend. The event began with Harold Watson, the athletic director, introducing the history of the Champions of Character Award to a primarily alumni audience. The Dr. Roman Gingerich and Dr. Ruth Gunden Champion of Character Awards are presented each year to a male and female alumni athlete who exemplify the college’s core values in their lives, work and community service. Gilberto Perez Jr. receives award from alma mater EMU
Gilberto Perez Jr., dean of Students at Goshen College, is receiving an award, but that is one of the last things on his mind. Perez is being recognized by his alma mater, Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Distinguished Service Award is awarded annually to a graduate of EMU who has made an outstanding contribution to EMU, the church or the greater community. Former Record Editor Wins Statewide Journalism Award
Katie Hurst, who served as editor in chief of The Record last fall, received a second-place award from the Hoosier State Press Association for an editorial that she wrote in which she called for Goshen College students to commit to "showing up for each other." Broadcasting students win awards
Members of The Correspondent, The Globe and FiveCore Media travelled down to Indianapolis to attend the the Indiana Association of Schools Broadcasters (IASB) annual awards luncheon. Both the television and radio station teams won a total of 18 awards from the 15 audio and visual categories that were available. About 25 projects were submitted from work done on the television news program, The Correspondent, FiveCore Media, which is GC’s video production company, as well as on the campus radio station, WGCS 91.1 The Globe. GC publications bring home first, third place
The Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s (ICPA) annual convention proved to be yet another award-winning year for Goshen College’s newspaper, The Record, and literary magazine, Red Cents. The publications, both student-run, won a total of 34 awards, the most prestigious being The Record’s “Newspaper of the Year” award. Red Cents won third place in a tie for “Best Literary Magazine of the Year.” This is the second time in three years that The Record has won “Newspaper of the Year.” Last year, The Record came in second to The Bachelor of Wabash College. Student’s play up for national award
Jonathan Bontrager-Waite is a first-year at Goshen College studying theater and writing. Last November, he submitted a short play for a chance at the John Cauble Award for Outstanding Short Plays, a national playwriting award given by the the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The play he submitted is about two high school boys in show choir that take a field trip to an art museum, who eventually get to know each other better through discussions of art. Five alumni will return to Goshen College on Oct. 6 to receive awards for their dedication to GC’s core values in their lives post-graduation. The 2017 Culture for Service awards will be presented to Sheri Hartzler ’73 of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Philip Thomas ’87 of Goshen. Student journalists win ICPA awards
A total of 27 Goshen College students received awards at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s annual conference for literary magazine and newspaper awards on April 8. The Record took home the second place award in the “Newspaper of the Year” competition amongst Indiana colleges in the Division III. The Record is in Division III, which puts it in competition with other colleges and universities with an enrollment under 3,000. Communication department wins big
Goshen College’s communication department took home gold from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) awards, as well as the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) awards. Over spring break, representatives from Goshen College’s radio station 91.1 FM The Globe traveled to New York City on Saturday to receive awards from IBS. Agutu wins Hoosiers State Press Association Award
While still in Peru on her Study-Service Term (SST), junior public relations and Spanish major Achieng Agutu received an email from Duane Stoltzfus, professor of communications, requesting her to reserve a Saturday in December for a trip to Indianapolis. She had won a Hoosiers State Press Association Award for her opinion piece, “Reflections on Living in a White World”. This prestigious award accepts pieces from five journalistic categories: news, sports, opinion, feature and photography. Alia Byrd: “Realizing the Dream” recipient
Alia Byrd, a sophomore elementary education major, with a double minor in TESOL and Spanish, was awarded the “Realizing the Dream” award on Nov. 5 along with other first-generation college students.
