Gilberto Perez receives two statewide awards
In a single week, Gilberto Perez, senior director of intercultural development and educational partnerships, was recognized with two awards. Perez’s work in education and advocacy for the Latino community is the reason he was the recipient of these awards. He began his role with CIIE in 2014, but he’s spent years bringing together diverse people and advocating on behalf of the Latino community in Goshen. Despite his administration position in CIIE, Perez spends time mentoring students and being a role model for them. He also strives to make connections between people and create bridges. On Sept. 28, Perez was honored...

The Globe and GCTV success continues
After another successful year at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems (IBS) national award ceremony several weeks ago, Goshen College’s WGCS The Globe and GCTV came back with more awards and nominations after the state-wide Indiana Association of School Broadcasting (IASB) College Broadcasting awards last week. Led by Jason Samuel, WGCS general manager, and David Kendall, associate professor of communication and Correspondent advisor, Goshen found no trouble at all holding their own against the surge of competitions from other colleges with “Communication departments larger than Goshen College’s collective student body.” Despite the 235 entries from 12 colleges in Indiana, WGCS The Globe...

The Globe recognized at annual IBS convention
Already a familiar face at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS), Goshen College’s own WGCS The Globe was represented with twelve finalist nominations and two first place awards last weekend at the 76th Annual IBS convention in New York City. Out of 6,000 entries from across the nation, one school getting twelve finalist nominations out of the 115 colleges represented at the IBS convention is, at the very least, “atypical.” Because of the size and level of student involvement with WGCS The Globe, the ability of Goshen to compete with larger schools is incredible and something for Goshen to be proud...

This year, the Goshen College business department granted students from a variety of disciplines entrepreneurship grants to further pursue their business ventures. The business department heard an assortment of different pitches, “Shark Tank” style, but eventually decided upon four businesses to award a total of $18,000. The grants were divided into two venture grants and two experimentation grants. Maddie Gerig, a junior art major, and Preston Carr, a junior business major, were the two recipients of the venture grants: grants given to those who have already started their own business. Gerig’s work is based in Goshen, under the name “Madeline...

Derstine wins Everence national video contest
For the second time in the past three years, a Goshen College student has brought home the award for the Everence national video contest called “Money Talks.” Elizabeth Derstine is a fourth-year film and English writing double major at Goshen College. Recently, Derstine claimed the nationwide award for her video, “Money Talks: The Wallet Diaries.” The video personifies the wallet of a Goshen College student as it confesses it doesn’t have many friends; only acquaintances that come and go—until the wallet comes across an Everence debit card that sticks around. “I was hoping to share the idea that money is...

Realizing the Dream
It’s four o’clock in the morning. Some college students are finally heading to bed, but Valentin Calvillo’s parents are getting up for work. For the last 20 years, Calvillo’s parents have worked in factories. Calvillo, a sophomore, is a first-generation student. “[My parents] were really proud of me because I decided to go to college,” Calvillo said. But his goal isn’t simply a bachelor’s degree; Calvillo is aiming for medical school. Majoring in biochemistry, Calvillo wants to become a general surgeon, or do something related with surgery. “I feel like access to medical care should be a fundamental human right,”...

The Globe wins ‘Best Audio DJ,’ ‘Best Newscast’
Several weeks ago, Goshen College’s 91.1 The Globe (WGCS) and its students were nationally recognized at the College Broadcasting, Inc. National Student Radio Productions Awards in Minneapolis. Danielle Kerschhackl, a senior broadcasting and ASL double major from Elmwood Park, IL, came home with the award for “Best Audio DJ.” Kerschhackl credits her success to the hands-on experience with the radio station since the beginning of her first year. “I didn’t have to be an upperclassman to get experience—my first year I was on air and getting experience,” said Kerschhackl. “This is a unique part of Goshen College, their broadcasting program...

Watkins recognized for marketing skills
This past Christmas break, Melia Watkins, a sophomore, received the exciting news that she had won an entrepreneur scholarship through a competition offered at Goshen College. “My idea was to create a hair accessory that would be better suited to accessorize braids instead of ribbons that don’t attach or bobby pins that aren’t secure,” said Watkins. Her product consists of leather strands decorated with beads that are meant to be braided into the hair and secured with a bobby pin. “I came up with the idea when I was on an Etsy forum and I just asked, ‘What do people...
