Students receive Global Citizenship Awards
The annual Global Citizenship Awards were presented once again to three students who, through a process of nominations and applications, were decided to best represent the college’s values. This year’s awardees were Fatima Zahara, Silas Immanuel and Arleth Martinez. The award, in addition to its prestige, gives the two runner-up students a $5,000 scholarship and the winner with $10,000. This year, Immanuel and Martinez were awarded runners-up and Zahara was awarded first place. The spring semester has been good to the Goshen College communication department, as The Record, The Globe and FiveCore Media have all had success at various competitions. In February, the Broadcast Education Association announced award and scholarship winners. GC grabbed 11 recognitions, including three first-place awards. In early March, The Globe staff traveled to New York City for the 85th Intercollegiate Broadcasting System awards. The Globe was nominated for 23 awards and took home five first place trophies. Celebrating GC’s ‘sheroes’
Last week, during the college’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, students and staff came together to celebrate and honor the contributions of local “sheroes.” The nominees have inspired change, uplifted the voices of others, and made space for future generations to do the same. GC theater students place at KCACTF
Last week, on the snowy campus of the University of Michigan-Flint, theater students from across the Midwest gathered to participate in the Region 3 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. This year, nine students represented Goshen College in a variety of acting, design and production areas. Two students participated in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Auditions throughout the festival. Dontaye Albert, a junior theater major, and Hermione Bean-Mills, a junior history major, were nominated by a KCACTF respondent for their performances in Twelfth Night this past November. Globe wins 5th radio station of the year
Faculty and students from Globe Media gathered with hundreds of other college broadcasters at three different nationwide award ceremonies in October: College Broadcasters Inc. in Orlando, Florida; the Marconi Awards in New York City; and the College Media Association Pinnacle Awards in Atlanta. Goshen College communication department members traveled to New York City for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Media Awards over spring break. The IBS focuses on those who wish to pursue a career in film, radio, television or other forms of media. Nine members from 91.1 The Globe, GlobeTV and FiveCore Media were present for the awards ceremony. The Record’s 2021-22 Maple Leaf Awards
Team of the Year Winner: Women’s Track & Field The women finished the indoor season by breaking five school records at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) indoor national championships in early March. In addition, four athletes were named All-American. With the outdoor season underway, three athletes have already qualified for the NAIA outdoor championships in May. Globe Radio named Best in Nation
Goshen College’s radio station, 91.1FM The Globe (WGCS), won best college station in the nation (enrollment under 10,000) this year for the fourth time since 2011. The Globe staff also won first place for the best use of YouTube, and two upperclassmen, Courtney Templeton and Jeremiah Sherrill, won first place for best news report. Globe Media is looking for another dominant year in the annual Intercollegiate Broadcast Systems (IBS) awards. Goshen College students have snagged 19 total nominations for the upcoming Student Media Awards with samples of their work. On top of that, 91.1FM The Globe (WGCS) received its twelfth-straight Best College Radio Station nomination. Goshen College broadcasting students won five national first-place awards from 19 nominations this past Saturday, at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Multimedia Conference in New York City. Communication students win broadcasting awards
Goshen College broadcasting students Riley Friesner and Kadie Spoor won awards from the Broadcasting Education Association’s 2020 Festival of Media Arts, earning them a spot at an awards ceremony and conference in Las Vegas in April. Friesner, a senior, won first place for best on-air personality and an award of excellence in the PSA/promotional/commercial category. Goshen given NAIA honor for 17th year in a row
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national office announced last week that Goshen College is one of the 180 NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institutions for the 2018-19 academic year. Goshen is one of only 14 schools to have achieved the award every year since its establishment in 2002. The only other Crossroads League institution to do so is Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. Newspaper, radio win big in Indianapolis
It was a thrilling weekend for The Record as the weekly newspaper scored the Indiana Collegiate Press Association’s Division III “Newspaper of the Year” award for the second consecutive year. This was the third time in four years that The Record received this recognition.
