Choral connections across ages
As snow gathers on the ground and Christmas approaches, students from all levels prepare for their performances of A Festival of Carols. Accompanying the adults on stage are dozens of junior-high singers from around the Goshen area: Shout for Joy, the Community School of the Arts’ choral ensemble for grades six through eight. Sandy Hill, in her 16th year as Shout for Joy director, said she loves working with kids in junior high: “I feel a calling to work with this age group, and I really enjoy inspiring them and motivating them and learning all this music with them.” Members...

‘Twelfth Night’: Shakespeare in 1980s London
This Friday, Umble Center’s doors will open to present the first showing of Goshen College’s fall mainstage: “Twelfth Night: Or What You Will.” The play is a staple of Shakespeare’s canon, and GC’s production has a backdrop of London in the 1980s with a post-punk twist. Director Amy Budd, assistant professor of theater, said that her idea for this rendition has been waiting for 10 years and it seeks to emphasize and explore the gender issues in the play. “Goshen College is the place to be thinking about gender,” Budd said. “I really enjoy working to figure out how to...

The Arts Box: 11/9
In my junior year of high school, I created this graphite piece that marked the beginning of my fascination with the surrealist movement. This moment led me to shift my artistic focus from “mundane” subjects like still life and portraits to exploring the world of the impossible.

‘Artober’ welcomes new perspectives
Last Saturday, Goshen College’s Art Club hosted Artober, an arts workshop featuring painting, printmaking and ceramics. Art Club members led the three stations, and for two hours, GC students could float between them. The goal of the event was to offer an opportunity for students to create art and increase interest in the department. Shayne Wassell supervises the printmaking workshop. Jackson Steinmetz for The Record Sarah Corbitt, a senior art major, was one of the organizers of the event. “We wanted to do a day with just open workshops for people who aren’t art majors or [are] a little intimidated...

Fire and metal: GC’s sculpture studio
On Thursday nights, the sizzle from welding, the screech from cutting aluminum and the laughter from warm faces resound in a small workshop tucked away on the edge of campus: the Chairman Building, home to Goshen College’s sculpture studio. John Mishler (left) helps Mounsithiraj use a blowtorch to bend a tree limb. Seth Smith Kauffman for The Record “This place allows you to relax and use a different side of your brain,” said John Mishler, associate professor of art. He has many sculptures installed in Goshen, including “Dream Chaser” on the Millrace and “Broken Shield” at GC. “I started sculpture...

GC artists take to First Fridays
The city of Goshen held a downtown arts tour on Oct. 6 as a part of First Fridays. Artists had 22 locations downtown to display art, and Goshen College students set up shop where there are usually baked goods and produce for sale: the farmer’s market. Among the onions, apples and Amish cheese were collections from eight student artists showcasing and selling their work. Mira Yoder sold mature paintings while she knitted. Lukas Bontrager-Waite for The Record Meanwhile, on the opposite end of town, fast-paced drum beats, smooth saxophone solos and uproarious brass resounded in the halls of the Goshen...

Experimenting with bilingual theater
This homecoming weekend, Goshen College will be putting on the one-act play “A Comedy Renaissance (Un renacimiento de la comedia).” The show is co-directed by Amy Budd, assistant professor of theater, and Cristóbal Garza González, associate professor of Spanish. It seeks to bring the Spanish language, Spanish speakers and diaspora traditions to GC’s stage. It was important to Budd to make this incorporation as organic as possible. “There’s not a clear way forward — or an industry best practice — for me as a white woman within an HSI, doing this work,” she said. “I thought: ‘what’s the next step...

Documentary: ‘Vidas in the Golden Cage’
“We live locked in a golden cage. The cage is made of gold and there is a lot of abundance in this country, but it’s a cage. One is limited. One is locked up.” These words come from the documentary “Vidas in the Golden Cage,” which senior film production major Sarah Lopez Ramirez developed for Maple Scholars this past summer. “My project is about highlighting the stories of Latino immigrants in Goshen and their experiences with a term many Latinos use called ‘the Golden Cage,’” Lopez Ramirez said. “That term describes the feeling of being in a place that offers...

Janneken Smucker, a Goshen College graduate, spoke on Sept. 16 in the Good Library Gallery about the 17 quilts on display for the exhibit “A Cabinet of Curiosities 3,” which showcases Anabaptist clocks, ceramics and quilts. Her talk brought audience members from in and around the GC community, with roughly 50 people in attendance. The Arts Box: 9/14
I started photography in late high school, taking photos on old film cameras bought from thrift stores. I came to Goshen College interested in taking my photography to the next level, but also in making my photography more pointed and purposeful. Over the last three years, I have been given amazing opportunities by 91.1 The Globe and Jason Samuel to get up close to the action on stage and take some photos. Enjoy these photos taken at local venues and concerts. Bands featured: Lotus, Tumbleweed Jumpers, The Main Squeeze, Potential Novelty and Michigan Rattlers. Seth Smith Kauffman is a junior...
