The Arts Box – Ryan Snider
The imagery of the disembodied head of George Washington, urging the onlooker to vote, is meant to provide humor and further reflection upon the absurdity of politics, with the milking of patriotism and bygone eras becoming crutches for current candidates. Ryan Snider is a senior art major from Goshen, Indiana. In his free time he enjoys doodling, jamming to music, working at Campus Post, hanging out with friends and welding sculptures.

GC choirs ‘spread hope’ in fall concert
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Goshen College Music Department held its annual Fall Choral Concert. A tailgate hosted by the Campus Activities Council in the Music Center courtyard was a prelude to the concert itself. The tailgate provided snacks, refreshments and lawn games. Ella McLeod, a junior accounting major and member of the Campus Activities Council, said she wanted to “bring light to students that are going to be performing and … [bridge] the gap between the dorms and residents and the concerts at Sauder.” While the event was advertised to students on campus, the CAC generously opened up the...

‘Decorate Your Own Piñata’ with Art Club and LSU
This past Friday, the Art Club and Latino Student Union hosted a Decorate Your Own Piñata event. Aaliah Higareda, Art Club president and junior graphic design major, and Kena Oropeza, an LSU leader and senior marketing major, are two of the many minds who put together the event. When asked about the planning behind the event, Oropeza said, “We wrote down ideas that were not done by LSU in prior school years and tried to think of creative events. I was the one who wrote down decorating piñatas because I thought a craft event would be fun, engaging and unique.” ...

Democracy in Go-Go City
On Tuesday night, Kamala Harris delivered a speech at Ellipse Park, south of the White House, the same space where Donald Trump spoke before the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the capitol. Taking place one week before election day, organizers expected the rally to draw over 50,000 attendees. As the night progressed, the sounds of music, pro-Palestine protests and city police corralling spectators cut through the noise. Delgadillo, a communication major, captured the crowds as they snaked up and down Constitution Avenue. He approached taking these photos with “an outsider’s perspective, I felt like an observer,” he said. “I just...

Fashion show highlights sustainability and inclusivity
Last Friday, EcoPax and Advocates hosted their first fashion show and clothing swap in Newcomer 19. The event brought over 50 students, and highlighted the importance of sustainability in fashion, alongside the potential for personal style to be empowering. Advocates is Goshen College’s LGBTQ+ affinity group, with Lydia Esh, a senior social work major, and Peace Muhagachi, a senior sociology major, as vice president and president respectively. Esh said the planning was stressful since the event happened so soon after fall break. “We were trying to figure out all the things before break hit, and it felt a little bit...

Maple Scholars tell story of local artist
This past summer, two Goshen College film students, Isabel Massud and Silas Immanuel, dedicated their time to producing a documentary as a Maple Scholars project. Their time has been spent discovering and telling the story of Cora Dale, a talented artist from Goshen who died in a state mental hospital. Their summer term has since ended, but Massud and Immanuel continue developing the documentary. Dale’s roots in Goshen can be traced to 1889, when her parents built a house downtown when she was 21. As a young adult, Dale traveled to Chicago and found opportunities as a teacher and musician,...

The Arts Box 10-3-2024
This artwork began as a simple flower sketch, but it quickly evolved into something more profound. At the center of the piece is a striking purple flower with a subtle blue tint. Woven between the petals are words — words that convey a deep sense of melancholy and emotional struggle. The flower, vibrant and beautiful, symbolizes the outward appearance of happiness, success and vitality. Yet, the words nestled within represent the inner turmoil and unspoken challenges that often lie beneath the surface. Just as the flower may appear serene from the outside, individuals can project an image of joy while...

‘An Untitled Project’
On Oct. 4 at 8 p.m., Victor Vegas and Fatima Zahara’s musical, “An Untitled Project,” debuts in the Umble Center. The idea was born when Zahara was sketching in her notebook instead of doing music theory. “I was totally messing around two years ago in Dr. Hill’s music theory class drawing my musical instead of doing my homework,” Zahara said. “I’ve kinda always wanted to write a musical, she said. “When I was in high school I was doing musicals. I was like man, I’d like, love to write one of these.” Zahara, a senior music and theatre double major,...

Cultivating Hispanic heritage through music
On Saturday, Sept. 14, Goshen held its fourth annual Hispanic Heritage Festival. The event was created for the purpose of educating our broader community about Hispanic Heritage Month and to enjoy dancing, food and music, but most importantly, to celebrate and embrace these beautiful cultures that make up our community-wide family. Not only were there over 80 vendors present but there was something particularly special on the stage. The newly launched Mariachi ECoSistema (ECo) ensemble got the opportunity for the second year in a row to perform various traditional mariachi songs for the entire festival. If you somehow haven’t caught...

Good Library hosts local artist’s exhibit
On Sunday, the Good Library hosted a reception to celebrate the works of Chad Friesen, a member of the Southside Fellowship in South Bend who died in 2013. Though Friesen faced a lifelong physical disability with no diagnosis, he left behind a legacy of over one thousand paintings. The presenter on the day was Elizabeth Miller, assistant professor of history. She opened the reception by saying, “The energy coming into the room this afternoon feels like a reunion.” The feeling was shared by friends and family of Chad Friesen, as well as Goshen alumni who were present. Speaking at the...

Goshen ‘shows out’ for Arts on the Millrace
This past weekend, on a windy and brisk sunny day, nestled between the bridge and Goshen Brewing Company was the 11th annual Arts on the Millrace, a day full of music, crafts and connections. The event hosted over 50 regional and local artists alike, with many being Goshen College alumni. Norah Amstutz, a clay potter based in South Bend, was announced as the first place winner. The event consisted of a line of tents and pop-ups, with everything from graphic t-shirts, many choices of ceramics — with mugs and pots being among the most popular — paintings, photography and other...

GC’s Du Quotidien: Connecting students and art
Tom Ashcraft, a professor of fine arts at West Carolina University, visited Goshen College as part of a college endowment for visiting artists. Ashcraft and the art department hosted a reception and workshop along with a speech at convocation. The focal point of this lecture centered around his art exhibit “Du Quotidien,” which was recently displayed in the Hershberger Art Gallery in the Music Center. “I always walk past the gallery in the Music Center for choir,” said Lukas Bontrager-Waite, a senior writing major and reception attendee. “I’m always curious about whatever showcase they have set up in there, so...

GC theater students place at KCACTF
Last week, on the snowy campus of the University of Michigan-Flint, theater students from across the Midwest gathered to participate in the Region 3 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. This year, nine students represented Goshen College in a variety of acting, design and production areas. Two students participated in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Auditions throughout the festival. Dontaye Albert, a junior theater major, and Hermione Bean-Mills, a junior history major, were nominated by a KCACTF respondent for their performances in Twelfth Night this past November. Both students participated as semifinalists, with Albert becoming one of 16 finalists in...
