First tie of the season for Women’s Soccer
Goshen Women’s Soccer were just 46 seconds away from their fourth consecutive away win last Saturday. The Maple Leafs traveled to Centerville, Indiana, to take on Indiana University East. Junior Megan Bower opened the scoring in the six-minute mark after a cross from first-year Lauren Cernak, who leads the team with three assists this season. The goal marked Bower’s first since returning from a year of three back-to-back injuries. IU East immediately responded by taking the next six shots in the game with five of them being on frame. Women Soccer Team goes for gold
Justin Crew has been cancer-free for 21 years. He has also been the head coach of the Goshen College women’s soccer team for just about a month. How do these two things connect? September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and the women’s soccer team is helping the close-to-home cause by highlighting the disease during their Sept. 11 home game vs. Holy Cross College. Crew shared his story of battling pediatric cancer with the women’s soccer team early on in the season, and instantly the women knew they wanted to support their coach and many others in any way they could....

Women’s soccer coaches leave GC
It was announced in the faculty bulletin this past Friday that women’s soccer coaches Scott and Anne Gloden, who have been with Goshen for three years, will no longer be working for Goshen College. The announcement comes after conversations that took place between the women on the soccer team and administration. Last semester, the women’s soccer team sensed that the Glodens were not a good fit for the team as head and assistant coaches. After an attempt to talk to the Glodens directly did not go well, the team decided to go to the administration about the issue. The issue...

Men’s and women’s soccer post opposite results Sat.
Both Goshen men’s and women’s soccer teams were in action this past Saturday as the men completed their long travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a 1-0 advantage, while the women remained at home but fell to the same opponent by the same score. Goshen’s lone score came in the 77th minute as sophomore TJ White broke through the Cougar defense to collect and capitalize a Nate Nussbaum, a junior, assist sent across the middle of the pitch. The Leafs went in front and did not look back as the victory clinches the Leafs a spot in the end-of-the-year...

Teams split in Saturday play
The Goshen College men’s and women’s soccer teams took to the road this past Saturday. The men posted a 1-1 tie at Huntington University while the women lost to the University of Saint Francis 1-0. TJ White, a sophomore, scored a header in the 69th minute off of a short corner kick from Stuart Aeschliman, a first-year. This was all the GC men could manage in Saturday night’s 1-1 draw to the Foresters. The goal was the third of White’s career against the Foresters after scoring twice in GC’s 2-1 victory last October. Huntington (5-2-4, 1-0-2 CL) got on the...

Women’s soccer appears on “Price is Right”
The women’s soccer team traveled to California this past August to close out preseason and compete in their season opener. While there, sophomore Londyn Feasel ended up starring on “The Price Is Right.” During the last week of pre-season, the Goshen College women’s soccer team boarded a bus at 3 a.m. to drive to O’Hare and fly on to Los Angeles. This was the first team trip organized under head coach Scott Gloden. Gloden said that he and his wife, assistant coach Anne Gloden, like to take teams on longer trips before the season opens. “Los Angeles was a natural...

Both Goshen men’s and women’s soccer teams hit the road this past Saturday as the men picked up an impressive 3-0 advantage over Indiana University East, while the women fell to Rio Grande 3-0. The Maple Leaf men extended their winning streak to five games on Saturday afternoon when they defeated IU East 3-0 at Centerville High School. First-year forward Stuart Aeschliman struck first for Goshen (7-2) in the eighth minute on a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box off of a long through ball from sophomore Lucas Vilela. Saturday all-around soccer shutout
Goals by first-year Stuart Aeschilman, and juniors Ollie Smith and Nate Nussbaum proved more than enough for the Goshen College men’s soccer team to defeat Roosevelt University 3-0 on Saturday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. Goshen (2-2) led 1-0 at halftime thanks to Aeschilman’s free kick finding the back of the net in the 26th minute. Smith added a goal in the 63rd and assisted on Nussbaum’s goal. Smith played a low, hard pass on the ground to Nussbaum, who sprinted in from the midfield to the corner of the penalty area and ripped a shot pass the diving...

Maple Leaf seasons conclude on early tournament exit
Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams saw their seasons come to an end last Saturday. Until this year, both teams hadn’t played postseason soccer at the same time since 2007. A late-game corner kick proved too much for Goshen to handle in their men’s soccer Crossroads League tournament quarterfinals, as the Huntington University Foresters downed the Maple Leafs 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon from King Stadium in Huntington, Indiana. Due to the absence of artificial lights around Forester Field, kickoff was bumped up to 2 p.m. Partly cloudy skies and nearly 20 mph winds from end to end persisted...

Last Saturday, the Maple Leafs went to Huntington University and defeated the Foresters 3-2, followed by a 2-1 victory over the Bethel College Pilots on Tuesday evening. On Saturday, Huntington opened up the scoring in the 10th minute for the 1-0 lead. That score line held until the halftime break, the Foresters leading 1-0. Back in action on Monday, the team hosted Marygrove College and came away with a decisive 3-1 victory to wrap up their non-conference season. On Saturday, Cornerstone opened up the scoring in the 14th minute for the 1-0 lead. Women’s soccer ‘thinks pink’
This past Saturday, the women’s soccer team hosted Huntington University in their season finale. However, this was no ordinary game—GC players wore specially made pink jerseys to support breast cancer awareness. The team held a silent auction for the jerseys during the game and the proceeds along with the gate earnings will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Huntington and the referees also joined in—Huntington sported pink headbands and the referees wore pink socks. Goshen went on to win the game 1-0 behind the efforts of Molly Zook and Natalie Thorne, both juniors, in goal. The duo combined for...

Cornerstone edges out Leafs
The Goshen women’s soccer team hosted the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University Saturday night, ultimately falling in a 1-0 nail biter. With the backdrop of senior night hanging over the game, Goshen looked to earn a non-conference victory. Anneliese Baer, Gina Berkey, Maria Bischoff, Juliana da Silva, Katelyn Vendrely and Malaina Weldy, all seniors, were all honored during the pregame festivities. Once the seniors had been recognized, the game got underway with heavy action from both sides. Less than 16 minutes into the first half, Cornerstone capitalized on a defensive miscue and took a 1-0 lead courtesy of Josie Litty....

New soccer seat
The beginning of a new school year brings many changes—one of those changes for Goshen College is the creation of stadium seating at the GC soccer complex. According to GC athletic director Josh Gleason, the goal is to generate interest that could help to make some improvements and upgrades and be able to use the money brought in for those purposes. Gleason gave some insight into what brought about the update to the soccer complex. “In a very general sense, we’re looking at ways to improve all our facilities from playing surface to the aesthetics and making them visually appealing....

Women’s soccer coach announced
On Monday, March 9, the Goshen College Athletic Department announced the hiring of Scott Gloden as the new head coach of the women’s soccer team. Gloden, who played soccer at the University of Michigan, has since held roles as assistant coach with a number of other Division I teams, most recently at Saint Louis University. This will be Gloden’s first time head coaching, which he describes as the fulfillment of “a lifelong dream.” He has already met with the team for two practices. “Even in just the two practices last week, I could see a lot of talent,” said Gloden....
