Q&A with women’s soccer coach Scott Gloden
Scott Gloden grew up in Traverse City, Michigan and is a 1998 graduate of the University of Michigan. While there he played for the Wolverine’s club soccer team. He has previously coached in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Missouri. Most recently he has coached the St. Louis University Billikens. He said from having lived in the Midwest he was aware of Goshen, and when he heard Goshen was looking for a head coach he knew he wanted to apply. The Record sat down with him to hear some of his thoughts on soccer. What is your history with soccer? How long...

Leafs Defeated Over Break
The Maple Leafs’ men’s and women’s soccer teams each played three contests over Goshen’s fall break this past week. Unfortunately, neither the men nor the women were able to secure a victory in the string of games. The men began their three game losing streak against Indiana Wesleyan at home on Saturday, Oct. 11. The Maple Leafs took the lead just 12 minutes into the game when Andrew Snyder, a sophomore, collected fellow sophomore Philip Longenecker’s pass and buried a shot to give Goshen a 1-0 advantage. The visiting Wildcats struck back with the final two goals, however, to overtake...

Women Lose Third Conference Game
Goshen College women’s soccer team lost their third conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Maple Leafs played against Taylor University at GC in a complicated game, due to the weather. Taylor dictated play throughout, creating plenty of chances while limiting the Maple Leafs to just six shots for the contest. The Trojans scored the first goal in the 14th minute, which came from the forward Dani Goecke, a senior. Just 13 minutes later, Trojan midfielder Amanda Roden, a senior, scored to give the team the two-goal lead. Roden scored after being awarded with a penalty kick due to Maple Leafs’...

Interim Coach Energizes Leafs
The Goshen women’s soccer program went through a transition period this past offseason, highlighted by the hiring of Joel Gonzalez as the new head coach. Gonzalez, an Evanston, Ill. native and 2007 Goshen College graduate, was hired after working last season as an assistant coach for the Maple Leafs under former coach Dale Stoltzfus. Prior to his time at Goshen, Gonzalez spent four years as an assistant coach at Goshen High School, and he also currently teaches Spanish at GHS. Gonzalez was drawn to GC by friends from church and camp, but he was also intrigued by the opportunity to...

Maple Leafs resist Lakers’ Attack
On Sept. 12, a week after having their home opener postponed at halftime due to weather, the Goshen women’s soccer team lit up the scoreboard early against visiting Roosevelt University in a 3-2 triumph for the Maple Leafs. The fireworks started 23 minutes in as freshman Lena Charles opened the scoring with her first career goal by ripping a shot from just inside the box. Goshen would strike two more times within the next 12 minutes, with a Roosevelt own goal off a corner kick, and junior Gina Gautsche assisting on sophomore Melanie Drinkwater’s 4th goal of the season. Roosevelt...

Thorne against the net
Natalie Thorne is a first-year social work major from Goshen, with minors in peace, justice and conflict studies and women’s studies. She was one of two goalies for the women’s soccer team this fall and is now transitioning into basketball. Describe your childhood soccer career. I got started with soccer first with the Goshen Youth Soccer Organization. In second grade, I got started with Goshen Stars, a traveling league. I played with the Goshen Stars up until my fifth grade year. As my teammates entered middle school and started their middle school soccer careers, I continued to play with them....

For The Record
In light of this week’s special sports insert, I want to focus on a topic that has come up fairly often this fall: attendance at women’s soccer games versus men’s. I’ll be the first to admit that I do not play or understand sports very well, so I am no expert on the situation, but I live with three soccer players, who do, in fact, tell me how much they appreciate a full set of bleachers. I think this discussion is an important one to continue, not just for the women’s team, but for our campus community as a whole....

Lady leafs fight back
The Maple Leaf women’s soccer team matched its highest scoring output of the season Tuesday night against Saint Francis. While the visitors’ offense fell three goals short of its season high, that was still the story in a 6-3 Cougar win at the Goshen College Soccer Complex. Less than four minutes elapsed before Saint Francis broke that tie when Kayleigh West knocked in a rebound. Maple Leaf Alia Munley, a junior, scored in the 30th minute, putting away a cross from Anneliese Baer, a sophomore. But only 76 seconds later, the Cougars took a 2-1 lead and Goshen was never...

Goshen College announces new women’s soccer coach
(Correction: this article was initially attributed to sports editor Shane Miller. The Record regrets the error.) Goshen College graduate Dale Stoltzfus was hired last Thursday as the new head coach of the Goshen College women’s soccer program. In a total of 36 seasons coaching both boys and girls high school teams in Indiana and Pennsylvania, Stoltzfus tallied an impressive record of 477-194-52 over his career. In addition, Stolzfus’ teams have won a pair of Pennsylvania state championships and made it to the Indiana semi-state round twice. Stoltzfus graduated from Goshen College in 1984 with degrees in secondary education and mathematics....

Dos Santos resigns as women’s soccer coach
Fabio dos Santos, head coach of the Goshen College women’s soccer program, announced his resignation last Wednesday. Tim Demant, Goshen College athletic director, was not available to comment on reasoning behind dos Santos’ resignation. Dos Santos joined as head coach in April 2011, becoming the sixth head coach in the 20-year history of the women’s soccer program. In both of his two seasons coaching the Leafs, dos Santos led the team to a 5-13 overall 1-8 conference record. Prior to coaching at Goshen College, dos Santos served as the head men and women’s soccer coach at Waldorf College in Forest...

Leafs weather storm for first league win
Relative to Goshen’s recent performance, the women’s soccer team may have felt like it was raining goals Wednesday night in a 3-1 win over Marian. By the time the contest ended, it was raining in a different sense entirely. Kristina Lopienski, a senior, scored twice and Katelyn Vendrely, a first-year, once for the Maple Leafs, who led 2-0 at halftime. The game was halted by wind, rain and lightning at 6:47 p.m. with 4:41 to play. After a delay of 44 minutes, the result was declared final. Goshen took 15 of the 28 shots in the contest, with each team...

Carlos and Sara Soto find home at Goshen College
For the first time in years, Carlos and Sara Soto feel entirely at home. In their final season as collegiate soccer players, the Soto family, which includes 4-year-old Natalia, is exactly where they are supposed to be. The road here has had its challenges and turns, but as long as they have each other, the family said, every bit has been worthwhile. While going to school and playing junior college soccer near her hometown of Susanville, Calif., Sara Soto was introduced to Carlos, who had immigrated to the United States from Mexico as a 14-year-old and built a successful career as...

High hopes for women’s soccer as Crossroads League play nears
Six games into the season, the Goshen College women’s soccer program’s future is looking bright. The Maple Leafs started the season with a tough 4-1 loss to Viterbo University in the Cardinal Stritch Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. However, Goshen was able to quickly bounce back the following Monday with a big win against William Penn University by a score of 9-0. This win gave the Leafs momentum that they carried into their regularly scheduled games, winning the next three games over Manchester, Anderson and Andrews University by scores of 2-0, 3-0, and 12-1. However, the Leafs hit a bit of...

Goshen fights hard; drops to Aquinas
It was a cold, wet and tough game for Goshen College’s women soccer team as they dropped to Aquinas College 1-0 in a non-conference game at Goshen College. The Maple Leafs fought hard in the first half, with the game seeming to swing back and forth between the Leafs’ and Aquinas’ control. Aquinas had many opportunities in the first half with a free kick and two corners. The second corner connected with freshman Melissa Hogan for a goal at the 40th minute. The Leafs also had opportunities, but could not seem to connect many shots and had one shot on...

Cougars Sweep Leafs in Home Opener
GOSHEN, Ind.—The Goshen College women’s soccer team took on St. Xavier for their 2011 home debut. After two wins on the road with this year’s strong offense, the Leafs hoped to continue their undefeated record. Although they had several opportunities to score, the Cougars went home with a 2-0 victory. The Cougars entered the match with a 1-3 record but recently defeated NAIA #4 Hastings College. A key player on their team was senior midfielder, Joanna Janulis. In the first half with 21 minutes left, Janulis scored the Cougars’ first point. With three minutes to go, Janulis scored yet another...
