Relative to Goshen’s recent performance, the women’s soccer team may have felt like it was raining goals Wednesday night in a 3-1 win over Marian. By the time the contest ended, it was raining in a different sense entirely.
Kristina Lopienski, a senior, scored twice and Katelyn Vendrely, a first-year, once for the Maple Leafs, who led 2-0 at halftime. The game was halted by wind, rain and lightning at 6:47 p.m. with 4:41 to play. After a delay of 44 minutes, the result was declared final.Goshen took 15 of the 28 shots in the contest, with each team putting nine attempts on frame. The increase in wind and rain throughout the second half made passes and shots move erratically: several players slipped on the grass, and both goalkeepers had at least one shot slither out of their grasp.
The Maple Leafs move to 5-11 on the season. Goshen and Marian are tied for ninth in the Crossroads League at 1-7 [and I’ll fill in this thing about Bethel once I know how they did.]
Saturday, Goshen was less fortunate in a 5-0 loss to Taylor in Upland. The Trojans, who raised their record to 10-4 (3-3 in conference), outshot Goshen 14-3 and limited the Maple Leafs to one shot on goal.
Barring a string of upsets in the Crossroads League tournament, Wednesday was Goshen’s final home game this season. The Leafs travel to No. 6 Spring Arbor on Saturday and to Grace on Tuesday. Single-elimination play starts Saturday, Oct. 27.
