The Goshen College women’s soccer team traveled to take on Cornerstone University on Saturday night, dropping the contest 2-0 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Back in action on Monday, the team hosted Marygrove College and came away with a decisive 3-1 victory to wrap up their non-conference season.

On Saturday, Cornerstone opened up the scoring in the 14th minute for the 1-0 lead. Melanie Drinkwater, a senior, had one of her team-leading two shots in the first 45 minutes, and the teams went into the break with the Cornerstone Eagles leading 1-0.

In the second half Cornerstone struck again in the 51st minute to take a 2-0 lead, the score that would stick for the rest of the contest. Both Drinkwater and Ginyce Haywood, a senior, tallied shots for the Maple Leafs in the second half, and senior goalkeeper Molly Zook recorded 11 saves in the loss.

Monday’s home contest was a determined response from the Maple Leafs against Marygrove College. Goshen wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as in the 7th minute senior Rachel Short-Miller slotted a through ball for Haywood, who calmly touched around the goalkeeper and finished home for the early 1-0 lead, a score that would hold true until half.

Goshen outshot Marygrove 11-to-3 through the first 45 minutes, while the Mustangs earned the corner kick edge 3-1.

The second half saw three goals, two within a minute of each other. In the 56th minute Marygrove earned a penalty kick and capitalized to tie the game 1-1. Then in the 57th minute Goshen had an answer; Haywood ripped a shot from the left side of the box, which the keeper pushed across the goal mouth where first-year Megan Bower was waiting to knock it home. The Maple Leafs regained the lead 2-1.

The final goal of the evening came in the 68th minute when the Maple Leafs earned a penalty kick. Asia Green, a senior, stepped up and drilled a shot into the roof of the net to secure what would become the final score, 3-1 in favor of Goshen. Zook finished with two saves in goal for the win.

The team is now 4-4-1 and starts conference play on Saturday when they travel to Huntington for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
