The Goshen College soccer program is feeling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic more than most athletic teams this fall. While the Goshen College women’s soccer team anticipated a Sept. 19 start to their season, low numbers and cancellations due to COVID-19 precautions delayed the start of the season until Sept. 23. Women’s soccer team faces low numbers
With only 13 players on its active roster, this year’s Goshen College women’s soccer team is struggling to keep team numbers up. Newcomers Savannah Roth-Walter, junior, and Olivia Krall, sophomore, opted out due to safety concerns regarding COVID-19, and three more team members were forced into remote-learning in their home nation of Brazil. Crossroads League divides soccer competition pool
The Crossroads League will feature the same teams competing in a different format this fall season, as the league divides into two divides based on location. This change has been made strictly for the men and women’s soccer season. “It’s set up so that if the men are playing [an away game] then the women are playing each other at Goshen,” said Tony Miller, Sports Information Director. “They mirror each other like that.” Each division will have five teams respectively, with the Cross Division having Huntington University, Taylor University, University of Saint Francis and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. COVID-19 forces hand of two Goshen College student athletes
The Crossroads League announced to their student athletes on July 26 their intentions to play a regular season in the fall. Two days later, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), moved their fall championships to the spring. As a result, Goshen College provided their student athletes with the option to opt out of the upcoming 2020 fall sports season. The Goshen College women’s soccer team fell hard in the second half of the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday. The Goshen College Maple Leafs soccer teams were in full swing on Saturday night when they squared off with conference rival Grace College. Both teams fell to the Lancers in close contest, the men’s team losing 2-0 and the women’s 2-1. The women’s soccer team continued to gain momentum this past weekend, as they won their fourth straight game in a row on Saturday against Indiana Tech. It wasn’t until the 98th minute that junior Beatriz Meneghin was able to score for the Leafs, winning the game 2-1 in overtime at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The Goshen College women’s soccer team was back in action last Saturday for a game against Cleary University. The Maple Leafs defeated the Cougars 2-1 in a physical encounter. Pregame festivities began the evening with a warm recognition of local fire and police officers at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. Both men’s and women’s soccer faced defeats this past Saturday. The women traveled to the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where they were defeated 2-1 by the Wolverines. Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams played in their final regular-season matchups this past Wednesday as they both lost to the Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan University. New women’s soccer coach fosters a positive environment for the team
Justin Crew, the new Goshen College women’s soccer coach, says he’s from “all over.” Crew was born in Maryland, moved to southern West Virginia when he was young, graduated high school in Grove City, Pennsylvania, attended Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois.
