A fresh start: Young players add new talents to basketball program
This year, both the men’s and women’s basketball programs have added a substantial number of underclassmen to their rosters. With the men signing four freshman and the women bringing in seven, each team has the potential for greater depth on and off the court. Steph Miller, women’s head coach, and Neil Young, new men’s head coach, have each worked hard to recruit players that will continue to build up their programs. The men’s basketball program has faced significant changes this season, both with the addition of new freshman players as well as with a new head coach. With two of...

From the ground up: Miller builds on girls’ basketball program
Sometimes fate plays a large role in where a coach ends up. For Goshen College head women’s basketball coach Stephanie Miller, that’s exactly how she landed in her current position. Coming from Michigan school systems with 13 years of coaching experience under her belt, Miller grabbed the reins and pulled hard when she took over the Maple Leafs. At a crossroads in her teaching career at the time, fellow McCracken director and former GC men’s basketball Coach Gary Chupp informed Miller of an opening for a coaching position at the collegiate level. “I got on some sites and started thinking...

Thorne against the net
Natalie Thorne is a first-year social work major from Goshen, with minors in peace, justice and conflict studies and women’s studies. She was one of two goalies for the women’s soccer team this fall and is now transitioning into basketball. Describe your childhood soccer career. I got started with soccer first with the Goshen Youth Soccer Organization. In second grade, I got started with Goshen Stars, a traveling league. I played with the Goshen Stars up until my fifth grade year. As my teammates entered middle school and started their middle school soccer careers, I continued to play with them....

The team will face Lourdes University in the opener at 8 p.m. Friday and Madonna University at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Jet-lagged Leafs drop game in Ohio
The Goshen women’s basketball team couldn’t shake its shooting woes in a 72-33 conference loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Ohio. In the contest’s first couple of minutes, Goshen trailed 4-2; further action would favor Mount Vernon considerably, as the Cougars led 33-16 at halftime, then 52-21 and 70-28 in the second half. The longest bus ride in the Crossroads League, four hours and 250 miles, appeared to take its toll on Goshen in the first half. The Maple Leafs were just 5-of-25 (20 percent) from the floor before halftime and 8-of-45 (18 percent) for the...

Who said free throws don’t matter?
Whoever has watched a basketball game and said the words “free throws never matter” has not watched enough basketball. One may think the art of the free throw is simple because the player doesn’t have anyone guarding them while they take the shot. Yet this simple skill can easily be tarnished and wasted, and sometimes the fate of a game may hang in the balance due to free throws. Case in point? Tuesday’s men basketball game vs. Mount Vernon. Final Score? 66-61. Number of free throws shot and made by the Maple Leafs? 16-of-23. Now, anyone with math skills can realize...

Basketball: Tradition vs. new age
As an aspiring sports journalist, I have watched my fair share of sports — particularly basketball. I grew up loving the sport of basketball and always wanted to play it. However, I have never been the athletic type. My love of basketball has made me realize that the style in which basketball is played has been changing over the years, and not just in my own generation. In the age of Larry Bird and Jerry West, we witnessed a more traditional (some would call “boring”) style of basketball, with methodical ball passing that resulted in a mid-range jump shot or...

Eyes like a Hawk
One of the first things you might notice about Samantha Hawk, a senior basketball player, is her sharp and arresting eyes. She has a certain confidence and purpose that shines through when you speak with her. This week The Record sat down with Hawk to discuss where she finds inspiration and why she loves basketball. Q: How long have you been playing basketball? A: I’ve been playing basketball since the second grade. So yeah, it’s been a long time! Q: Why basketball? A: Well, my mom told me I had to pick something, and I was decent at it. Sort...

Second half gain can’t prevent loss
The Goshen women’s basketball team dropped a road game to Bethel College Wednesday night in Mishawaka. While the second-half score favored the Pilots, the 39-28 margin was largely indicative of the final stanza’s flow. Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, history will remember the full game score. That will include Bethel’s 16 points in the first four minutes and 47-18 halftime lead en route to a 86-46 victory in the Weikamp Center. Poor shooting plagued the Maple Leafs in their second conference game: Goshen shot 28 percent from the floor and just 5-of-19 from three-point range. Sam Hawk, a senior, led...

Missed shots hurt Leafs in loss to Aquinas
The Goshen College women’s basketball team could not seem to get in any sort of shooting rhythm, falling to Aquinas College Tuesday night in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Maple Leafs shot just 33% on the night, hitting a mere 22-of-67 shots attempted, with hitting only 1-of-12 from three point range, and hitting 17-of-27 from the free throw line as they fell to 0-2 in the still young season. Freshman Liz Tecca scored a team-high 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting, with senior Mary Hataway chipping in 13 points and senior Sam Hawk scoring 12 of her own in her first game...

Women fall to Wildcats
The indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball team is ranked no. 1 in the country. Saturday, they demonstrated why in an 86-40 victory over Goshen as both teams closed their regular season. Sam Hawk and Paige Davis, both juniors, and Jaime Stack, a first-year, combined to close IWU’s early lead to one at 9-8 after eight minutes. the rest of the half was dominated by the Wildcats, who took a 37-15 lead en route to the victory. Women drop final home game
A pair of double-digit scoring totals were not enough to keep the Maple Leafs in the game as Goshen fell 78-40 to Huntington Wednesday night in Gunden Gymnasium. Sam Hawk, a junior forward, led Goshen with 13 points, and Jaime Stack, a first-year forward, chipped in with 10 more to go with a team-high eight rebounds. But the totals of those two players could not match a Forester attack that put four players in double figures and outrebounded Goshen 41-29. Huntington (18-9, 10-7) opened the game shooting 15-of-29 from the floor before halftime, taking a 41-31 lead into the locker...

Early struggles hurt women’s basketball
Goshen College women’s basketball continued its skid Wednesday night in a 66-47 loss to the Mt. Vernon Nazarene Cougars. In the first half, the Maple Leafs shot 5-of-24 from the field despite an early 7-2 lead. Mt. Vernon’s offense was more productive, shooting 14-for-31. Mt. Vernon closed out the first half on an 8-0 run, capped off by a layup by Amy Daniels. Head coach Stephanie Miller said “It was a disappointing first half and we dug ourselves a deep hole we just could not get back out of.” The Maple Leafs were able to score more efficiently in the...

Women’s basketball continues conference slump
Despite a balanced scoring attack that saw five players score at least eight points, the Goshen women’s basketball team dropped a conference game at Marian Wednesday night, 83-54. Jaime Stack and Sierria Burlage, both first-years, led the Maple Leafs with 11 points apiece; Kari Heusinkveld, a senior, pitched in 10 for Goshen(3-22, 0-13). Burlage grabbed 10 rebounds to lead both teams as Goshen won the battle on the glass 36-33. Adrienne Sahm had 17 points to lead a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Knights (16-6, 8-5). Saturday afternoon, Goshen wrapped up a three-game homestand with a chance to make...

Women’s basketball succumbs to second-half Pilot surge
On the first possession of Tuesday night’s Mid-Central Conference contest, Goshen jumped to an early lead. For the first 18 minutes, the Maple Leafs protected the lead on their home floor. In the second half, Bethel demonstrated why they are rated higher than 92 percent of NAIA Division II teams as the Pilots pulled away for a 70-45 victory at Gunden Gymnasium. Goshen first-year Jaime Stack controlled the opening tip, deflecting the basketball to senior Kaylee Hilliker for the first basket of the game after less than six seconds elapsed. A bit over nine minutes later Sierria Burlage, another first-year, converted...
