Huntington outlasts Goshen
On Saturday, the Goshen women’s basketball team looked to avenge their January loss to Huntington, but it was the visiting Foresters who held on for a 63-52 victory. While the final score might indicate that Huntington was in control, the game was far from one-sided. A heavily contested first half saw the lead go back and forth in the opening minutes. While the Foresters grabbed the lead for good with 8:27 left in the half, Huntington was unable to pull away from the persistent Maple Leafs. Junior Tyra Carver nailed a shot with 6 seconds remaining to pull Goshen within...

On Saturday afternoon, Goshen’s men’s and women’s basketball team hosted a double header against Grace College. Both Maple Leaf teams had defeated Grace earlier in the season in exciting games, but the visiting Lancers avenged those disappointments with two exciting wins of their own. The Goshen women started the day’s first game by jumping out to a quick lead over Grace, scoring within the first 30 seconds. The Maple Leaf and the Lancers traded early lead changes throughout the first half until Grace got the lead and held it for the final 3 minutes of the half, taking a 33-29...

Making a way for women in sports OLD
Before Title IX, a comprehensive regulation that encouraged the inclusion of all genders and gender orientation in sports, women were not accepted or integrated into the sporting world. Sports for women both lacked an initiative and craved a pioneer that could lead females down the court. Ruth Gunden, an alumna, saw this opportunity and used her vision and love of athletics to carry it through. “If it is okay for the men, then why would it not be okay for the women? That was my question,” said Gunden. In 1953, Gunden began her journey to establish intercollegiate athletics for women...

End of Regular Season Marks End for Leaf Basketball
In a way, the Goshen basketball teams have spared themselves one of the stresses of March: when the regular season ends on Saturday, the Leafs will not need to wait to learn their playoff opponent. The men were eliminated from Crossroads League tournament contention with a loss at sixth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday, while the women saw their postseason hopes fall by the wayside Saturday at Taylor. Before the unfortunate reality of mathematics set in, the Leafs kept their season alive Saturday afternoon in a 73-64 men’s basketball victory over Taylor in Gunden Gymnasium. Matt Glick, a senior playing his...

Weather Conditions Continue to Plague Basketball teams
As frigid temperatures continue to control the schedule of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, coaches and players learn to adapt to change. Both teams have experienced numerous schedule changes throughout their seasons, as weather has not always been in their favor. “We were luckily able to get our Marion game in and save ourselves a three game week. Unfortunately the men were not so lucky,” says women’s basketball head coach Steph Miller. As games are being rescheduled due to weather, teams are booking heavy weeks with as many as three contests in a week. These rescheduled games continue to...
