Goshen College women’s basketball continued its skid Wednesday night in a 66-47 loss to the Mt. Vernon Nazarene Cougars.
In the first half, the Maple Leafs shot 5-of-24 from the field despite an early 7-2 lead. Mt. Vernon’s offense was more productive, shooting 14-for-31.Mt. Vernon closed out the first half on an 8-0 run, capped off by a layup by Amy Daniels. Head coach Stephanie Miller said “It was a disappointing first half and we dug ourselves a deep hole we just could not get back out of.”
The Maple Leafs were able to score more efficiently in the second half, shooting 14-for-29 from the floor, but the initial hole was too big and the Cougars’ offense too consistent: Mt. Vernon was 11-for-21 from the floor after halftime.
Miller was pleased with the Maple Leafs’ effort in the second half, saying, “We had a very good second half compared to the first half.” Leading the Maple Leafs in scoring were Jaime Stack and Sierria Burlage with 12 point each, with Kari Heusinkveld lending 11 points and shooting 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Leading scorers for the Cougars were Amy Daniels with 12 and Alexis Harkins and Sierra Fletcher with 10 each.
Saturday, the Maple Leafs lost on the road at Grace College by a score of 73-54. Stack led the Leafs with 17 points, Burlage tallied 12 and had seven rebounds, and Heusinkveld pitched in 10 including a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer.
The Maple Leafs close out the season with two more away games at Spring Arbor and Indiana Wesleyan, and one more home game on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Huntington.
