Zach Miller is a Goshen College graduate who now works for Federated Media, producing commercials for radio stations in the Elkhart County FM radius and beyond. Zach was the 2008 student station manager at 91.1 Globe, and he looks back fondly on his time spent with WGCS. When did you graduate from Goshen College, and what was your major? I graduated in 2008, and my major was communications, emphasis broadcasting. I also signed up for a minor in marketing. Do you remember why you chose Goshen College? I chose Goshen College because… Can I say that...

WGCS celebrates 60 years of passion for radio
WGCS radio, also known as 91.1 FM The Globe, started in the 1940s at Goshen College with a shoddy transmitter, a lot of copper wire and a small group of passionate communicators. It is now celebrating its 60th anniversary as one of the most successful college radio stations in the country. Laura Hoover, a senior broadcasting major and current station manager at The Globe, loves to tell the story of how WGCS was born. In 1952, the Goshen College broadcasting experiment, which had already been broadcasting chapels and other campus events for years, became a bit too successful. “Someone left...

What is your year, major, and official job title? I’m a senior broadcasting major from Chesterton, Indiana. My official title is student station manager of Globe Media. How do you feel about being station manager? Stressed, but really honored. We are a college station, but...

On March 3, those nominated will travel to New York City to find out whether or not they’ll be bringing home gold yet again. The Globe and GCTV success continues
After another successful year at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems (IBS) national award ceremony several weeks ago, Goshen College’s WGCS The Globe and GCTV came back with more awards and nominations after the state-wide Indiana Association of School Broadcasting (IASB) College Broadcasting awards last week. Led by Jason Samuel, WGCS general manager, and David Kendall, associate professor of communication and Correspondent advisor, Goshen found no trouble at all holding their own against the surge of competitions from other colleges with “Communication departments larger than Goshen College’s collective student body.” Despite the 235 entries from 12 colleges in Indiana, WGCS The Globe...

The Globe recognized at annual IBS convention
Already a familiar face at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS), Goshen College’s own WGCS The Globe was represented with twelve finalist nominations and two first place awards last weekend at the 76th Annual IBS convention in New York City. Out of 6,000 entries from across the nation, one school getting twelve finalist nominations out of the 115 colleges represented at the IBS convention is, at the very least, “atypical.” Because of the size and level of student involvement with WGCS The Globe, the ability of Goshen to compete with larger schools is incredible and something for Goshen to be proud...

The Goshen College broadcasting program once again entered student work for the annual National Broadcast Educators Association awards, and they were not disappointed. The Globe wins ‘Best Audio DJ,’ ‘Best Newscast’
Several weeks ago, Goshen College’s 91.1 The Globe (WGCS) and its students were nationally recognized at the College Broadcasting, Inc. National Student Radio Productions Awards in Minneapolis. Danielle Kerschhackl, a senior broadcasting and ASL double major from Elmwood Park, IL, came home with the award for “Best Audio DJ.” Kerschhackl credits her success to the hands-on experience with the radio station since the beginning of her first year. “I didn’t have to be an upperclassman to get experience—my first year I was on air and getting experience,” said Kerschhackl. “This is a unique part of Goshen College, their broadcasting program...

The Globe gets an upgrade
The support of members and listeners alike pays off as 91.1 FM the Globe enters a new era with upgraded broadcasting equipment that will expand coverage of live events, including sports and concerts. In the language of technicians, broadcasters will now provide live coverage with the Tieline i-Mix G3 Mixer/Codec, with remote broadcasting done via Verizon 4G LTE data through a Pantech modem and a Cradlepoint router. What that means as the new school year unfolds is that broadcasts for 91.1 the Globe, which has already been named the best college radio station in the U.S., will have a clearer,...

The Globe crew goes to New York
This past Saturday night, staff members of 9.11 the Globe, Goshen College’s very own radio station, found themselves surrounded by some of the nation’s best in the business. The 75th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) conference was held in New York City this year, and 15 GC students, along with Jason Samuel and Kyle Hufford, represented Goshen College well. Among institutions with less than 10,000 people, WGCS was named best college radio station. Other award recipients were Tony Miller, who graduated in 2014, for “Best Basketball Play by Play” and Victor Garcia, a junior, for “Best Live Music Broadcast.”...
