Music to the ears: The Globe to open downtown location
On the corner of Washington Street, next door to Better World Books, there is a brown-papered storefront that has all of downtown Goshen abuzz. The windows may be covered now, but by the next First Friday event the paper will be torn down to unveil Ignition Music. Within that space, 91.1 The Globe is setting up shop. Steve Martin, a local businessman, GC graduate and lifelong music lover, is the brains behind Ignition Music. Martin started volunteering at The Globe through a friendship with general manager Jason Samuel and began to think of possibilities for bringing sound to the masses....

Four years of ‘Strictly Reggae’
‘Strictly Reggae’ is working its way into its fourth successful year of providing 91.1 The Globe listeners with music from various artists of the reggae genre. The program’s hosts, Raymond Waweru and Daniel Martin, spend every Thursday night from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on The Globe. Martin calls the tracks “really great studying music.” The laid-back playlist ranges from Bob Marley to some less-acknowledged artists. Throughout the two-hour sequence, the pair plays about 30 songs of their choice, as well as caller-requested ones. “We get calls from a lot of people,” Martin said. “Some call in multiple times with...

Jason Samuel: the man behind The Globe
Jason Samuel gets about as many emails in one day as the average person gets in six months. Samuel is the station manager for the campus radio station 91.1 The Globe and that means just about everyone wants a piece of him for something. I have a radio shift every Thursday for two hours in the afternoon and every week without fail I get a call from someone asking, “Is Jason around?” Every week I have to tell them that Jason isn’t around and that although I will leave Samuel a message, he is very busy. Usually, Samuel doesn’t have...

Through the Ears of a DJ
Rachel Halder, a senior also known as Rae, has been part of the Goshen College radio station, The Globe, since 2006. She began her education in radio with the Communications 190 course: Introduction to Radio. The course was “a thrilling experience,” said Halder, who met with a reporter while composing a list of songs for her show, which airs every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. It wasn’t until Christmas break of her freshman year that she realized that she had an “obsession with music” as she put it, especially in the “indie,” or independent music, genre. This “obsession” helped...

If you stay up late and listen to the radio from midnight-2 a.m. on Mondays, you might know the radio show "Two hours to kill." This will be the fourth straight year the hardcore and metal radio show is hosted by two Goshen College students on 91.1 the Globe. "We play almost all music you wouldn't hear on any radio station," said Scott Lehman, a 2008 Goshen College alumnus, who was part of the original show. James Weber, also a 2008 graduate, began the show four years ago with Lehman as his co-host. With Weber now living in Denver, Lehman...
