Goshen College’s radio station is once again a finalist in the competition for the Best College Station in the nation. Last year, the station, WGCS-FM, 91.1 The Globe, won the honor of being named the Best College Station in the Nation by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.
The IBS announced that The Globe is one of four stations competing for Best College Station in the category for colleges with an enrollment under 10,000 students. This is the first year IBS instituted separate categories for the Best College Station competition.
WGCS also received 14 nominations in other categories. Ian Shelly and Summer Hasan, both seniors, received nominations for Best Sports Promo and Best Show Promo respectively.
Jimmy Cassoday, Benjamin Kelly and Kelsey Morris, all juniors, also all received nominations, as did 2011 graduate Trisha Handrich. Kelly and Morris led the group with four nominations apiece. The Globe’s 15 total nominations are more than any other college or university in the country.
The students will spend their spring break at the 72nd Annual IBS Conference in New York City and find out how they placed among the other schools.
Morris, The Globe’s chief announcer, said she’s ready for the wait to be over.
“We sent these entries in a month ago, got the nominations about two weeks ago, and the anticipation is a killer!” said Morris. “We have a diverse staff that loves what they’re doing. I think this comes through in our Best Station piece and I think that we have a great chance of winning.”
Hasan, the station’s student manager, said she’s especially excited for one particular part of the conference weekend.
“I’m most looking forward to the award ceremony, because I’m expecting big results for our small crew,” said Hasan. “I fully expect us to win again this year. We’re just as talented, if not more talented, than any other college radio staff out there.”
Jason Samuel, The Globe general manager, also thinks his staff will place well.
“I think the Globe is one of the best college radio stations in the nation for what we do,” said Samuel. “With 15 nominations, I’m confident that our students are going to receive some extra recognition; I think it solidifies our place as one of the premiere student run college radio stations.”
“It’s tough to repeat in anything,” he said. “I feel like we’re actually a better radio station and our students are just as talented as any group we’ve ever had.”
“I’m extremely proud of our students and what they do to be engaged in the Globe as a co-curricular and balance their course work and their responsibilities at the station. They should be commended for that.”
