24 hour World College Radio Day
At midnight on Friday, World College Radio Day began. World College Radio Day is an annual event that celebrates college and high school radio stations. On the day, all participating stations are on air for 24 hours straight. Listeners are encouraged to tune in and foster awareness for these radio stations and their role in promoting independent, diverse and local content. This year, 604 stations participated in World College Radio Day. One of these stations to take part was 91.1 The Globe, the student-run station of Goshen College. There are currently nine paid student positions on the station staff. Two...

Best on-air personality, Kadie Daye
Kadie Daye, Goshen College alumna from the class of 2021, has been a “radio geek” since she was eight years old. She remembers sitting in the car with her mom, listening to various radio stations and passionately mimicking them. “I would do the jingles alongside the hosts, and every time they went to music, I would actually switch to the next station just to hear them talk some more,” she said. This early fascination with radio sparked her passion, which has only grown over the years. Daye, a former broadcasting and marketing double major, left a “secured legacy” at GC,...

Globe coverage is a slam dunk
There’s a lot more to broadcasting than just the voices you hear on the radio. Each broadcast is imbued with preparation and behind-the-scenes work. The on-air radio personnel during game action consist of three roles: the play-by-play commentator, senior Collin Echols; the color commentator, sophomore Jayden Yost; and junior Liliana Herrera, who conducts sideline interviews. All three are broadcasting majors. Another Globe staff member runs the board back in Newcomer. The play-by-play commentator’s job is to “paint the picture for a listener,” Echols said. “I want you to be able to close your eyes and say, well, okay. If the...

Globe wins 5th radio station of the year
Faculty and students from Globe Media gathered with hundreds of other college broadcasters at three different nationwide award ceremonies in October: College Broadcasters Inc. in Orlando, Florida; the Marconi Awards in New York City; and the College Media Association Pinnacle Awards in Atlanta. Students from The Globe and FiveCore Media received 18 individual awards across the three competitions. 91.1 The Globe was named Radio Station of the Year among institutions with enrollments under 3,000 students by the College Media Association. This is the first organizational Pinnacle Award for The Globe and the station’s fifth national title. Jason Samuel, associate professor...

Radio students get real-world experience
Interviewing people who talk for four or more hours per day isn’t the most difficult task in the world. They’ve got a lot to say. “I’m a quote machine,” said Jason Samuel, associate professor of communication and general manager of WGCS. “Don’t mess. Have I sold you yet?” Goshen College’s communication department is not all talk. Three broadcasting students, Dante Stanton, Amelia (Lee) Turnbull and Mike Murrell, have taken the real-world experience offered by the communication department to the next level, as they’re employed at radio stations and television channels before finishing their degrees. According to Samuel, GC’s awarded, dependable...

What is culturally progressive music, anyway?
In 17 days, I will graduate from Goshen College. I feel like I have accomplished pretty much everything I came here to do and have learned pretty much everything I came here to learn, except for one thing that has haunted me, day in and day out: What the heck is “culturally progressive music”? I’ve tried my very best to figure it out, I really have. I even took Introduction to Radio last semester and did weekly shifts on the radio. I spoke the words, “You’re listening to 91.1 The Globe, your station for culturally progressive music” into the microphone...

They were joined alongside Jason Samuel, manager of The Globe, and Kyle Hufford, who manages FiveCore. The IBS awards allow students to submit as many pieces as they see fit. The only rule is that they can submit the same piece of work...

A glimpse inside college radio: 91.1 FM The Globe
Tyson Miller’s hands move between a keyboard and an intricate radio board, his eyes darting between three monitors. As he manages these many streams of information, he speaks into the microphone: “Stay tuned for a few of my friends joining me at the top of the hour.” Miller, a sophomore communication major, is hosting the morning show, The Breakfast Blend, on Goshen College’s radio station 91.1 The Globe. The Globe, which claims to offer “a platform to discovering culturally progressive content,” programs a mix of Americana and AAA (adult album alternative) music. The station is student-run with hosted morning, sports...

The Globe staff also won first place for the best use of YouTube, and two upperclassmen, Courtney Templeton and Jeremiah Sherrill, won first place for best news report. These first-place prizes come from 17 nominations The Globe received from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems (IBS) awards. “We couldn’t do it without Jason Samuel,” said Seth Smith Kauffman, one of the nominees for the IBS awards. Samuel is the faculty advisor for The Globe. “Jason listens...

On top of that, 91.1FM The Globe (WGCS) received its twelfth-straight Best College Radio Station nomination. What music means to Jason Samuel
While most professors have hefty books on their shelves, Jason Samuel, associate professor of communication, has filled his office with CDs. Samuel was bitten by the radio bug early on. The first music he ever listened to was “probably my parents’ records,” Samuel said. These included popular rock and country bands and artists of the ‘60s and ‘70s such as The Beatles, The Kinks, Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins, to name a few. “I can remember listening to a lot of Motown [growing up],” he added. In his Cub Scout days, his mother took him and his denmates to visit...

‘Face Down in the Moment’: A song review
Currently sitting at number one on the Americana Radio Singles Chart, “Face Down in the Moment” comes from the album “The Future” from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. For myself, this song definitely has that classic-country Americana vibe and is a perfect compliment to driving a beat up pickup on a county road at sunset. The simple piano and drum rhythm brings out a reflective tone in the song and serves as a parallel to the last few years in Nathaniel Rateliff’s career, from his solo album “And It’s Still Alright” released in 2020, to the follow-up “The Future”...

Liam’s picks: The top 10 Globe tracks of fall 2021
Hello, readers! I’m Liam, and I’m the music director at 91.1 The Globe this year. Part of my job is to pick out new tunes and add them to the system. I’ve only been doing this for a month now, but I’ve stumbled across several gems already. Without further ado, here are my favorite fall additions to the Globe music library: “Danger” by AHI (pronounced EYE): I had never heard of this indie-soul singer until Jason Samuel, associate professor of communication, sent me this track. I appreciate AHI’s raw, stripped-down sound. “Better Be Lonely” by Samantha Fish: Fish...

Globe staff receives 29 nominations by Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems
91.1 The Globe and the staff that run the award-winning station were nominated for 29 awards by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems, including Best Station in the Nation for the 11th consecutive year. Goshen College received more awards than any other school in the competition. “I’m so proud of everyone at the Globe for doing so well, individually and collectively,” said Kadie Daye, senior Globe student station manager. “Out of my four years here, I think these nominations are the most widespread. Normally a select few people receive a nomination or two, but this year, it really feels like everyone was...
