Tips for being a good roommate
You’re human, which means that at some point in your life you’re probably going to live with other humans, be they friends, family, partners, enemies or some weird combination of those things. At college, there’s always a million things going on, so taking the time to be a good roommate can fall to the bottom of your priority list. However, whether you live on or off campus, I urge you to take the time to read this list and implement some simple strategies to make life easier for the people you live with. Cleaning. Wiping off counters, sweeping and cleaning...

Student-led autism social group doubles in size
Last year, The Record reported on a social group for Goshen College students with autism spectrum disorder. The group is run by Brooke Lemmon, professor of education and director of special education at GC, and consisted of six students. In the past nine months, the group has more than doubled in size; on any given meeting day, up to 16 students will show up. Lemmon said that a few key aspects have changed; the group is now meeting twice a month instead of weekly, and for the first time since its inception, it meets in the evenings. “We always met...

Marine biology program casts off with new lead professor
For five Goshen College marine biology students, going to class this semester means stepping into a boat and motoring into the Florida Keys. Phillip Allman, associate professor of marine biology, is the new director of GC’s marine biology program at the recently refurbished J.N. Roth Marine Biology Station in Layton, Florida. Ashley Christison, a junior marine biology major from San Diego, said a day of class opens with a discussion in the morning followed by time on the water or activities in the afternoon. On their first day of class, the students learned about ocean and wind currents and practiced...

5-month follow up
Goshen College saw its first protest last semester since before the pandemic. In April, around 60 students gathered with the aim of seeking transparency, communication and equity after the surge of waitlisted students for the Student Apartments. It has been over five months since the protest, and The Record followed up with leaders of the protest, students unable to get into the apartments and Chandler Buchfeller, the director of residence life and housing, to see what has happened since April. Immediately following housing announcements last semester, 33 students were waitlisted for the apartments. Of that list, 11 eventually got into...

Adela Hufford, director of orientation, transition and retention, said that the goal is to “acclimate new students to campus ahead of returning students” while giving them “some sense of confidence before the school year begins.” Based on student, faculty and staff feedback, Hufford and other orientation members integrate changes to ensure...

After 68 years, GC gets a mascot
Goshen College announced a new mascot on Monday morning: for the first time in GC athletic history, the Maple Leafs will officially be led by a black squirrel. Since men’s basketball had their first intercollegiate competitions in 1954, there has never been an official mascot, according to Tony Miller, sports information director. The mascot search committee settled on this decision after a multi-year selection process. The committee was composed of staff from the athletic department, theater department, advancement office, communications and marketing office, institutional research, admissions and the office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as student athletes. The...

New signs to welcome visitors
Visitors to Goshen College may soon be welcomed onto campus by new entrance monuments, as plans are in place for new signage on campus, pending approval from the city of Goshen. The current plan is to install new signs in two main entrances to campus: the Welcome Center entrance off of Main Street, and the newly constructed entrance on the north side of campus, off of 10th Street. However, the overall project goes well beyond just those initial steps. Cynthia Good Kaufmann, interim director of facilities, explained that the college also wants “to improve the corner of Main and College...

Newcomer renovations: A bright spot for community
Students have likely noticed new furniture, flooring and study areas in Newcomer. The renovations that took place over winter break are meant to benefit more than just those who take classes in the building. A joint effort between the Center for Community Engagement (CCE), the physical plant and a $90,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment, the project will help Newcomer serve as a hub for the community. The improvements to Newcomer are part of a larger project of improving the connection between Goshen College and the community. Dr. Erika Buhring, executive director of the CCE, hopes that the renovated building...

Spanish speakers make conversation at weekly ‘Charlas’
Cristobal Garza Gonzalez sits at a table in the Hunsberger Commons, holding an old Spanish translation of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. He is reading quietly, until he notices somebody he recognizes walk by. “Hola! ¿Cómo estás?” he says with a wave, inviting them into conversation. If they choose to take the bait and sit down, Charlas will officially commence. Charlas, which can be directly translated to “chats,” is a weekly gathering hosted by Garza Gonzalez, assistant professor of Spanish. It has one primary goal: to give people a place to socialize in Spanish. “The idea for this came from my...

Intramural sports bring students together
Nearly every week, large groups of Goshen College students gather in the Recreation Fitness-Center, on the sand volleyball courts, or at the KMY lawn to partake in intramural sporting events and tournaments. To start the semester, students formulated teams and played in the annual sand volleyball league and tournament. Likewise, an outdoor soccer tournament was held this past weekend. According to Chad Coleman who works in Student Life and has managed all intramural sports on campus since 2009, intramurals create a great sense of community and camaraderie amongst students. “Intramurals provide a competitive, yet fun, inclusive environment for students, particularly...

Disc Golf comes to Goshen
The sport of disc golf has exploded since the start of the pandemic, with new courses popping up across the country. This summer, the city of Goshen jumped on the bandwagon. Mullet Park, a short walk through the woods from the better-known Shanklin Park, became the first disc golf course in the city of Goshen in July when a full nine-hole course was installed. A local father and son-in-law combo are responsible for bringing the game to Goshen. Stuart Meade and his son-in-law Kevin Hinkle, got into the game three years ago. After visiting courses around Northern Indiana, the pair...

GC memes: Soggy, well-fed and full of squirrels
Historians of the present study old newspapers, letters, journals and books when trying to understand the past. Historians of the future will probably study memes. For Lydia Nolt, one of the creators of the Instagram account “Goshen_memes_4_2000s_teens,” a meme doesn’t necessarily have to be an image with text, even though that is the generally understood definition of a meme. According to Nolt, the thing that really matters when it comes to memes is “some sort of unifying factor.” “Everybody gets it,” she said, “or at least they should. Memes are about community.” Nolt is a junior history and secondary education...
