Vaccination rates on campus climb
As of yesterday, 558 members of the Goshen College community have reported receiving at least one dose of the vaccine. Four hundred and twenty eight of these people have received both doses. These numbers are likely lower than the actual number of students and employees who have been vaccinated, as individual reporting is the only way statistics on this subject can be gathered. According to Kevin Miller, pandemic task force coordinator, Goshen College was able to vaccinate 196 and 76 people on Thursday and Friday of last week respectively, “including some friends and family from the community, not just GC...

Eligible GC students receive vaccines; some turned away
On Tuesday, an estimated 225 Goshen College employees and students received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, due to a last minute opportunity given by Goshen Community Schools. However, many students registered to receive a dose were turned away later in the day. The clinic was made possible by a federal vaccination initiative to vaccinate educators, coordinated by Meijer Supermarkets and Goshen Community Schools. According to Kevin Miller, lead campus contact tracer, approximately 1000 educators were vaccinated at Goshen High School. On Tuesday afternoon, all GC employees, including student workers, received an email informing them that they would...

The chants have returned
Goshen College athletics come with a very supportive fan base. Not being able to support players for the last three months has been hard on many members of the community. Recently however, there seems to be a sign of hope for fans who are eager to return to the stands. The spectator policy implemented on Sept. 4 underwent significant shifts: from allowing a small number of fans, to allowing players two family members each, then canceling all attendees altogether. This policy has been amended once again, now permitting athletes four complimentary tickets through a pass list at the gate to...

When will the chants return?
For nearly a year now, COVID-19 has ravaged its way across the U.S., cancelling event after event, and the world of sports is no exception to the changes brought on. Loyal alumni, the always-proud student section and families of the players can now only watch the Maple Leafs play from a digital standpoint — online at goleafs.net or over the airwaves on 91.1 The Globe. When the Goshen College spectator policy was first released, 100 seats were made available for spectators for indoor events, a number that fell to zero on Nov. 16 when the spectator policy was amended due...

Goshen College works to reimagine campus flow
Goshen College is nearing the end of a year-long process with the campus planning consulting firm Credo, after the initial timeline was pushed back due to COVID-19. The administration decided a long term campus plan was necessary after noticing that every new renovation project resulted in the displacement of other groups on campus. Credo was recommended to the administration by another consultant because of it’s high quality and holistic approach, according to Ann Vendrely, academic dean. “When they first came to campus they also looked at some of our student support structures at the same time they looked at our...

Colossian Way model gives space for political conversation
Fourteen students led five small groups in political conversations at Goshen College on the day preceding and the day following the presidential election. These discussions were based on the Colossian Way, a method of dialogue designed to help Christians “lead through conflict” and explore difficult subjects. Students, faculty and staff gathered to process the uncertainty surrounding this week’s presidential election. Each student discussion group was facilitated by students who participated in the peace, justice and conflict studies political talk class over the course of this semester. Suzanne Ehst and Joe Liechty taught the Monday night class, which met once a...

COVID-19 housing near empty after record high week
Kenwood House holds zero COVID-19 positive students following a week where its max capacity for students in isolation was reached. Vacant apartments and quarantine spaces in the Miller dormitory are also becoming more available as the number of positive cases on campus declines. After a record high 22 people were reported to be in isolation last Wednesday, Oct. 17, Goshen College saw a decrease in new COVID-19 cases in the last seven days. The spread of the coronavirus continued, however, as 15 new cases were reported between students and faculty, bringing the cumulative number on campus since Aug. 17 to...

Students participate in mock UN climate negotiation
“The numbers need to go up! Be reasonable! Be practical!” Representatives from the U.S., China, India, the European Union (EU) and other developed and developing nations scrambled around Newcomer 19, as they frantically searched for negotiations with each other that would help alleviate the global climate crisis. The bartering continued as promises were made, accusations thrown around and national budgets stretched. Senior Mandira Panta arranged the mock UN climate negotiation as a way to involve students in a real-world experience on how countries come together in an attempt to solve the greatest threat facing the world in the coming years....

Thank a custodian, clean up after yourself
Cleaning Goshen College is hard work. 20 buildings, 81 classrooms and 117 restrooms with a total of 265 toilets — 11 custodians clean them all, every day. Tables, whiteboards, floors, windows and bathrooms are central to living and learning on campus, but the people who clean them work behind the scenes. Christy Farley, custodial supervisor, said that much of what the custodians do goes unnoticed until something doesn’t get cleaned, either because a custodian is absent or because an emergency cleanup draws custodians away from other areas. “When things don’t get done, people notice,” said Farley. But almost always, things...

Students cruise their way to class
The wind is blowing, and the ground is full of sticks and colorful leaves that have fallen from the trees. It is 1:50 p.m. and students are walking everywhere on campus. Some fly across the sidewalks with their transportation wheels, all of them giving the campus a life that it has been missing for the last 50 minutes. This is Goshen College’s “rush hour.” Students have only 10 minutes to fly from one side of the campus to the other. In the current rushed life of students, is there anything that can top that? During the late 1940s to early...

When Goshen College needs a haircut
When Rene Villa Gutierrez moved to Texas, he left more than 70 Goshen College students without a barber. Gutierrez — who would have been a sophomore at Goshen College this year — left for Houston last May after living in Goshen for eight years. He got a job at a barber shop and decided to stay. Gutierrez gave his first haircut when he was a freshman at Goshen High School. It was to his little brother. “I learned how by watching videos on YouTube,” he said. A few dozen more hours on YouTube, a hair-cutting kit and a...

GC releases crime report
Each year on Oct. 1, colleges and universities around the nation are required to compile a public annual security report including statistics of campus crime for the previous three calendar years. In addition, campuses must include details about efforts taken to improve campus safety. This report became mandatory for all colleges and universities to release in 1990, when the Clery Act was passed in response to the rape and murder of Jeanne Clery at Lehigh Univeristy in 1986. Following her death, Clery’s parents campaigned for universities to be held accountable for not releasing information regarding campus safety. The Goshen College...

GC sets sights on AAUW conference
For nearly a decade, Goshen College has been a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The AAUW is an organization that empowers women by advocating for gender equity in educational, social, economic and political areas of life. Every year, the AAUW hosts a National Conference for College Women Leaders (NCCWSL), where collegiate women from across the country are invited to engage in meaningful ways in a space that is dedicated to empowering them. While at the conference, students develop new leadership skills by attending discussion panels, workshops, or listening to guest speakers. For the 2020 national conference,...

Student cooks balance time, taste and price tag
Moving into dorms, apartments, or intentional living communities comes with the challenge and freedom of cooking. Some students come to college as experienced cooks, others start from scratch, and everyone learns something along the way. Student cooks take many forms. In Kenwood House, kitchen strategies vary widely among the 10 residents. Khampa Stempel, a junior, prepares the week’s food on the weekend, and neatly stacks each meal in a tupperware container in the fridge. Harrison Gingerich, a junior, has cooked for years, and studies “The Food Lab,” a cookbook that reads like a food science textbook. Nick Walter, a senior,...

Bridging the gap between students
Panera boxed lunches were piled high on Friday, Mar. 29 in the third floor connector as students gathered for student senate’s final Open Space of the semester. The focus of the discussion was working to improve the relationship between student-athletes and the rest of campus. Senate collaborated with the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) to plan the event. Samantha Shank, in charge of publicity and marketing, said that the partnering between senate and SAAC “provided extra support and more insight into this conversation.” The event was attended by non-athletes as well as representatives from many teams, including baseball,...
