Rio-themed prom goes downtown
For many in the graduating classes of 2024 and 2025, something major was missing from their high school experience: prom. Going to high school during the pandemic meant that, for many current juniors and seniors at GC, one of their proms was canceled just weeks before it happened. This past weekend, they had an opportunity to get that experience, as Goshen College’s Campus Activities Council hosted a prom in downtown Goshen. “Something that the senior class this year didn’t get was a prom our senior year [of high school],” said Cassidy Cwiertnia, a senior and CAC member. “So prom felt...

PIN, CAC and athletics team up
This past weekend, the Prevention Intervention Network and the Campus Activities Council collaborated on an interpersonal violence awareness event at the volleyball and soccer games. A table with flyers, statistics and posters was set up at the entrance of each game. Signs saying “Enough is enough,” “We stand against domestic violence” and “I’m _____ and I am a game changer” (the blank for a name) were laid out for people to pose with and snap pictures. They were also encouraged to post these photos with PIN’s Instagram handle as a way to spread awareness, which is PIN’s main objective. PIN...

Potential Novelty wins Battle of the Bands
Campus Activities Council (CAC) hosted a Battle of the Bands for student-organized bands on Saturday, Nov. 19th, to showcase their sound. Three student bands, The Runaways, Goshen Panic, and Potential Novelty, competed. Goshen-alum-started Gross Puppy performed a set as well. There’s no shortage of music at Goshen College, with every weekend seeming to boast a jazz concert, Performing Arts Series event, or choral performance. Most of these events are formal ones targeted primarily to the surrounding community rather than students. The Battle of the Bands was a different story. Colorful flashing lights and a small stage transformed Newcomer Center 19...

Students showcase talents at Kick-Off
Goshen College hosted its annual Kick-Off competition on Saturday, Sept. 24, in Sauder Concert Hall. Kick-Off is a long-standing tradition that allows students to showcase their talents. The 12 acts featured included a stand-up comedy routine, interpretive dancing and a wide variety of musical acts — all performed for a crowd of students and staff that often jumped to their feet to clap and dance. The theme for this year’s event was black and white, and many attendees could be spotted following the theme with their outfits. The Campus Activities Council (CAC) created a list of faculty members with strong...

GC hosts a Super show
Mike Super, a widely renowned magician, performed at Goshen College last weekend. Super is a winner of the NBC magic show Phenomenon, a top finalist on America’s Got Talent and a performer on The Ellen Show and Penn & Teller. He did two shows at the Umble Center as part of the Performing Arts Series (PAS). The first show, an official PAS event, was for a nearly sold-out audience paying $20 to $30 per ticket. The second was a free show for students. Both performances were in the Umble Center to give Super a more intimate setting that was conducive...

Kick-Off highlights student talents
Hundreds of people filled Sauder Concert Hall this past Saturday to see who’d come out on top at “A Night at the Oscars.” Of the 25 acts that auditioned, Kick-Off 2018 featured 12, showcasing a wide variety of students and talents. “This year’s show was exciting because we had more acts that weren’t exclusively music,” said Corie Steinke, associate director of community life and Campus Activities Council (CAC) advisor. The Goshen College event was emceed by Alia Byrd and Amy Castillo, alongside other members of CAC. Planning for the event began even before school started, deciding on factors such as...

Campus celebrates Black History Month with poet Ashlee Haze
Poet Ashlee Haze graced Goshen College with her presence this week in an event organized by both Campus Activity Council (CAC) and Black Student Union (BSU). The event took place at 10 p.m. on a chilly Saturday evening in the Umble Center auditorium. The night of poetry kicked off with an introduction of Haze from BSU leaders juniors Alhassan Barrie and Alia Byrd. Then Haze walked on stage to much applause from the people in the audience. Haze started off her set by giving a little information about herself and a statement about how she usually conducts her shows. “I...

Spring kickoff features a variety of acts
Saturday night saw a flashback to the 1920’s for the annual spring Kickoff event, and like the decade in U.S. history, it was extravagant. The student population turned out in droves to support the thirty students who competed. Acts ranged in content, including multiple bands, tap and pop dance, solo voice performances, original rap piece and a poem recitation. The theme for the evening was “The Great Gatsby.” The Campus Activities Council supported the theme with hosts dressed in flapper dresses and feather boas, and the appearance of Charlie Chaplin, both in a video skit and as represented by Kevin...

CAC 90’s Prom
Last Saturday, March 7, the Campus Activities Council (CAC) hosted a 90’s-themed prom at the Recreation-Fitness Center from 9 to 11 p.m. At the beginning of every semester, CAC plans and organizes events attempting to fill every weekend. According to Ben Hochstetler, a junior CAC member, “CAC has hosted a lot of events that have been a staple over the years. This year in particular, we have been trying to come up with new events, and prom happened to be one of them.” Not only was the flashback prom a new addition to the usual CAC events, it is one...

Nite at the RFC
This Friday, February 6, the Campus Activities Council (CAC) will be putting a new spin on inflatable fun. Starting at 10:00 p.m. to midnight, the Recreation-Fitness Center will once again host this semester’s Night At the RFC. Like last year, this event is free and open to all Goshen students interested in attending, and all students will have an equal opportunity to participate and win prizes for each event. Many of the past activities included an inflatable obstacle course, a bungee run and sumo wrestling, but this year’s main event will include a series of inflatable games. In previous years,...

Spring Kick Off Preview
With the holiday break officially over, Goshen students can begin looking forward to Spring Kick Off, which will be held Saturday, January 24th in Sauder Hall. The Campus Activities Council (CAC), headed up by Katie Dwyer-Zeman, has been planning this semester’s show since before Christmas break. They will produce a show similar to years past but with a few changes. “The theme for Spring Kick Off is less definable than the past few shows,” said Dwyer-Zeman, “but you can expect CAC members to entertain the audience throughout the show with short Minute To Win It inspired competitions. Our goal each...

New Faces Bring Fresh Ideas To CAC
It’s a new year for the Campus Activities Council (CAC) at Goshen College, with new members as well as old. CAC, headed up by Katie Dwyer-Zeman, assistant director of residence life and student activities, has already brought multiple well-attended events to campus, including the James and the Drifters concert. CAC’s mission, according to goshen.edu, is “to provide student led social-programming that promotes an engaged, inclusive, and healthy community on Goshen College’s diverse campus.” This mission will be carried out in a slightly different way this year. According to Dwyer-Zeman, “Every one of these fine folks [members of CAC] will have...

The ten o’ clock party: 22nd Century brings back hour after
The long-awaited Hour After will return to campus this weekend when 22nd Century takes the Newcomer stage for a night of jazz and pop entertainment. The diversity of performances the males of 22nd Century are providing for Hour After mirror their actions. The group is able to flip from banter and playful insults to harmonizing, quasi-romance songs in one breath. The group is composed of 12 members, including Tim Bixler, Aaron Bontrager, Neal Brubaker, Jackson Bush, Brendyn Cane, Andre Eisenbeis, Taylor Ermonian, Caleb Harnish, Lucas Harnish, Benson Hostetter, Minah Kim and Jared Zook. The band was formed by Minah Kim,...

Students, faculty to don masks at masquerade
A dance is easy to pull off. The checklist includes a playlist of catchy songs, and well, actually that’s it. Pulling off a masquerade ball, however, is a far more ambitious endeavor. A group of Goshen College students partnering with Student Life are up to the task. The idea for a masquerade ball came from a group of 16 students who live in Kulp. What was initially meant to be a Kulp-hosted masquerade transformed into an event more grandiose. Fearing that the number of people in attendance would be too many for Kulp, the group decided to host the ball...
