Hitting rock bottom or a restaurant floor
A few of you may know my friend, Matt Granitz. He graduated from Goshen last year, and one day this past fall semester, he came back to Goshen. A group of friends and I were going to meet him for dinner, though I wasn’t sure where we would be eating. GBCo is a fairly common place for us, so I simply assumed that that would be the meeting place. After sitting in the parking lot for a minute waiting for everyone else, I got a text from my good friend Chino, informing me that we were eating at Oasis, and...

Men’s volleyball 4-0 on the season
The Goshen College men’s volleyball team started their season off strong, defeating Trine University at Indiana Tech last Friday, after a season-opening sweep over Hiram College at home the previous Saturday. They continued their winning streak on Tuesday, beating both Trinity Christian and Olivet Nazarene. “I’m pleased with how they’ve played the past four matches,” said Lauren Ford, the new men’s volleyball head coach, who was hired this past summer. “We’ve worked so hard on a lot of things and I see a lot of it translating onto the court in tiny ways.” On Friday night, the Goshen College team...

Autism spectrum disorder social group seeks inclusivity
In the fall of 2020, Brooke Lemmon, professor of education and director of special education, launched an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) social group. The group, which meets for an hour once a week, has grown to consist of six regularly attending members, including three first-year students and three sophomores. Participants do not require a formal diagnosis: “Anyone who believes they have an ASD is welcome regardless of diagnosis.” Lemmon said. “We will focus on topics and strategies specific to people with ASD like social communication, restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior, and sensory needs.” Lemmon’s Ph.D. research explores “high impact ableism...

Counting eggs and logging hours at Miller Poultry
Spanning from Dec. 13 to Jan. 7, the Miller Poultry internship provided five Goshen students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of a large, family-owned poultry company. “I was in the room where they cut off the heads,” said Caleb Shenk, a sophomore accounting major who took part in the internship. “There were the chickens coming down the line, and they had their heads. Then they went through this machine, and they did not have their heads. It was very bloody.” Miller Poultry’s four-week internship was not for the faint of heart. Following the submission of...

Festival of Carols rings in the holiday season
This weekend, the 18th annual Christmas concert, “A Festival of Carols,” (FOC) will be held in-person at Goshen College in Sauder Concert Hall. The featured ensembles are the GC Choirs — Voices of the Earth, Vox Profundi and Chamber Choir — the Goshen College Symphony Orchestra (GCSO), GCSO Brass and the GC Community School of the Arts Shout for Joy children’s choir. Brian Mast, executive director of the Music Center and conductor of the GCSO, noted the significance of the return of live music: “This tradition is an important part of our offering to the community, and it just didn’t...

Women’s basketball defeats league rival Taylor
On Nov. 23, while most students were heading home for Thanksgiving break, the Goshen College women’s basketball team traveled to Upland, Indiana, for a conference match-up with Taylor University — and they came out victorious. The team knew they needed to slow down the Trojans’ transition offense, defend the perimeter with purpose and rebound the ball to eliminate second chance opportunities, but head coach Stephanie Miller placed the biggest emphasis on “traveling well.” In a shortened school week with holiday break looming, it’s easy to lose focus in anticipation of the holidays, but the Leafs were able to get the...

Six tips for surviving finals
At this point in my life, I have survived a total of 33 college finals. Yes, I went back and counted. As such, I feel qualified to advise our readership on how you, too, can survive the finals season. Tip #1: Get started early. I realize that this article will be published too late to help many of you. The truly exceptional students have been studying for weeks now, so you have some catching up to do. I suggest attempting to cram those weeks of studying into this weekend, or, if you’re feeling really brave, the night before your...

John Roth researches inclusion at GC for upcoming book
“What does inclusion look like?” This is just one of the questions that John Roth, professor of history, is seeking to answer through his ongoing research for a book about the history of Goshen College. The book, which is expected to be completed a year from now, will serve as a study of the college through the lens of “diversity, equity and inclusion.” “The story is really about this growing pluralism that, on the one hand, the college is openly affirming,” Roth said. “And at the same time, the college is having a great deal of difficulty truly embracing this....

Farewell!
It has been a delight being your Funnies editors these past few months. We appreciate everyone who suggested potential topics for us to write on, most of which we promptly ignored. For those curious, Erica is leaving for Ecuador SST next semester. Eli is staying on campus, but is apparently not funny enough without Erica to be asked back as Funnies editor. This is not at all surprising, considering our dear Editor-in-Chief never even gave us access to the Communications Hub. So farewell, friends. Hopefully you laughed at least once.

New academic programs approved by faculty
This fall, the faculty voted to approve several academic changes including launching a Masters in Social Work program, updating the Core curriculum and adding two new minors. Changes to a few other programs, like the interdisciplinary major and the social policy and advocacy minor were also approved. Most of the changes will take effect with the incoming class next fall, while current students will be given the option to adopt the changes. The faculty body voted on the changes at meetings in the last couple of months and will vote once more at the final meeting of the semester in...

Heading home for the holidays?
Ahh, Christmas break. The promise of relief from schoolwork and a much-needed break in the routine is right around the corner. Joyful reunions with family and loved ones, home-cooked meals, holiday celebrations and all that sweet, sweet free time awaits you! What an idyllic, perfect notion … And it is, until you hit week number two and suddenly your dear, sweet siblings are back to being nuisances, your friends are halfway across the country (or county, if you’re lucky), and you’ve already checked off all the usual hometown outings. Despite what my family may think, I don’t actively try to...

Our trip to cross country Nationals
The bus ride home from Huntington on Nov. 6 was long and quiet. The whole cross country team was thinking about whether we still had a chance at qualifying for the NAIA national cross- country meet. The conference race we ran earlier that day did not go as well as we planned, but we worked hard to maintain a strong national standing throughout the season, so there was still a chance. Over the next few days, we heard a series of conflicting messages on whether we would make it or not. Qualification for the national cross-country meet is determined by...

Girl Named Tom makes it to final 8 on ‘The Voice’
The band Girl Named Tom continued their run on The Voice Tuesday, advancing to the final eight. The sibling trio — made up of two Goshen College alumni, Josh and Caleb Liechty, and their sister, Bekah Liechty — has recently seen their fan base skyrocket on a national scale. Goshen College has become a microcosm of the craze, as many people in the Goshen community have become fans in the past few months. Announcements in the Communicator advertise The Voice watch parties: “Good snacks provided!” Girl Named Tom stickers adorn water bottles and laptops. Girl Named Tom-branded shirts and crewnecks...

Meet Goshen Panic, the band with a ‘brassy electic soundtrack’
They brought down the house at Kick-Off and Howell-o-ween this year, and they have no plans on stopping. They’re Goshen Panic, a group made up of seven Goshen College students: Sam Scheele, Ben Good-Elliot, Jonathan Orjala, Isaac Fisher, Birch Baer, Grace Hitt and Isaac Bontrager. Scheele, a junior music major and history minor who plays the euphonium and trombone, assembled the group in 2019 for a Kick-Off audition. “We just kept going [after that],” he said. Scheele is responsible for composing and arranging most of the band’s sets. “I look at a mix of jazz and funk, and I add...

Yoder Public Affairs Lecture features Endah Setyowati
Endah Setyowati, a visiting global scholar from Indonesia, spoke Tuesday about living out Goshen College’s core value of compassionate peacemaking in Indonesia as part of the Yoder Public Affairs Lecture series. At the well-attended event held at College Mennonite Church, Setyowati conversed with Study-Service Term director Jan Bender Shetler, about working on conflict resolution in Indonesia. Shetler guided the conversation with Setyowati before the event was opened up to audience questions. Setyowati grew up in Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia with a unique family background that proved useful for her peacemaking work later in life. Learning from a Christian mother...
