Title V grant funds Hispanic initiatives
Goshen College will receive a grant of just under $3 million over five years through a Title V grant from the U.S. Department of Education, following its induction as a Hispanic-Serving Institution last spring. The grant’s main focus will be on improving resources, expanding the Good Library and contributing to the well-being of students. The grant is called Conexiónes por Excelencia (Connections for Excellence) and is only available to a college if it is designated as an HSI, a designation GC received in January of this year. Flags replace paintings in Hunsberger Commons
“Noah’s Ark” is gone. The woman in blue with a bowl of fruit balanced delicately on her head is gone. The white moon, too, is missing. The Haitian paintings that added bursts of color to the Hunsberger Commons have been relocated for a year while the Union serves as a temporary cafeteria for Goshen College. Neutering Newcomer
After taking a laissez-faire approach to pets on campus for years, this past summer, Goshen College adopted a formal policy on when, where and how animals are allowed on campus. Originally, there were no formal policies to guide spectators or employees who wanted to bring their animals on campus, which sometimes led to hesitant encounters or complaints. “It felt a bit awkward,” said Marlene Penner, director of human resources. “Should we tell them they can’t do that? Goshen College saw its first protest last semester since before the pandemic. In April, around 60 students gathered with the aim of seeking transparency, communication and equity after the surge of waitlisted students for the Student Apartments. Mariachi group finds home on GC campus
Goshen College welcomed a new music group to campus last Friday. People may have come for the Performing Arts Series concert with Flor de Toloache, but they also had the opportunity to listen to the debut of a new Mariachi group from ECoSistema. Mariachi ECo, led by Hillary Harder, is a group that has been in the works since the spring. Gilberto Pérez, Jr., dean of students, approached Harder with the idea for the group. Video games in library mark shift in services
Where before there were shelves of magazines, old copies of New York Times book reviews and hundreds of DVDs, the media room in the basement of the Harold and Wilma Good Library is redecorated with soft lighting, chairs, a 62-inch flatscreen TV and a PlayStation 5. Enrollment update: How does GC compare?
Each year, Goshen College reports on the enrollment of students for the academic year, and the report for the 2023-24 school year was released last Wednesday. Last year, GC had an overall enrollment of 768 students across all categories, but that number has risen by 56 people to 824 this year, according to the GC Fact Book collected by the Institutional Research Office. Referring to the $7 million as “unaccounted for” was imprecise, and the subhead that described the funding as “missing” was a poor word choice — “fundraising is currently short $7 million” would have been more accurate. Maple Fellows partners with Greencroft
College students are not typically a common sight on the grounds of a nursing home, but after Goshen College started its new Maple Fellows program in collaboration with Greencroft, they will start making more appearances. Last spring, a group of six students began working as volunteers at Greencroft to gain additional career experience and new personal insights. Although they were volunteers, through the college, they received a scholarship for each semester they worked and a stipend to cover other expenses. Admissions gets a makeover
With the beginning of each new school year, Goshen College welcomes new faculty and staff to campus. One department with notable shifts is admissions, which, prior to this year, has had some unfulfilled positions. However, to begin the 2023-24 school year, the department is full with 13 people on staff. Filling the director of admissions space is Heather Zile. Before GC, Zile was the early childhood director of Lewis Cass Intermediate School District in Cassopolis, Michigan, gained fluency in Spanish as a missionary working in Monterrey, Mexico and, most recently, she held a similar position at Southwestern Michigan College (SMC)....

Convocation gives the year a sweet start
Sweet Synergy, the title of the opening convocation last Wednesday, marked the start of the school year. Year culminates with 125th commencement weekend

Goshen College hosted its 24th annual Academic Symposium this Wednesday. The Record wins 23 awards at ICPA ceremony
At the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) awards on April 1, The Record was named the second-best newspaper in the state for colleges under 3,000 students. Wabash College took first place with a score of 92 points, beating out The Record’s 71 points, while Taylor University finished in third with 63 points. This year’s second-place finish concludes The Record’s five-year run as “Newspaper of the Year.” The ICPA is a statewide journalism organization that promotes “fellowship among collegiate journalists in the state” and hands out awards every year recognizing collegiate journalists.
