Andes to step into new role as assistant dean of students
Starting next school year, Liz Andes will serve as the Assistant Dean of Students at Goshen College, working alongside the head dean of students Gilberto Perez. Andes currently works as the college’s director of health and wellness and Title IX deputy coordinator. She is trained as a clinical social worker. Prior to her time at GC, she lived in Seattle, Washington for 15 years. For eight of those years, she worked in refugee resettlement, then became a medical social worker at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Students protest housing policy after 33 waitlisted
Around 60 students gathered at Schrock Plaza at 10 a.m. today to protest this year’s surge in students waitlisted to the Romero student apartments and what students have described as a lack of transparency, communication and equity. As people began to circle the fountain, music played and leaders encouraged attendees to make signs. Students push for accessibility
With the retirement of Judy Weaver, Goshen College’s coordinator of accessibility services, GC is now searching for a new applicant to fill the position. The job posting on GC’s website lists some of the tasks of the role: “promotes accessibility services on campus,” “determines reasonable and appropriate accommodations for the classroom,” “informs faculty of needs through letters of accommodation each semester” and more. The position is part of what ensures that the college works to create a just collegiate experience for all students. Shenk to serve as interim pastor
Jen Shenk has been selected to take on the role of campus pastor for the remainder of 2023-24 school year. GC community members received the announcement through the communicator on March 24, which was her first day in the position. CCE to host 60th anniversary event for MLK’s ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail’
Goshen College’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) will recognize the 60th anniversary of the Letter from Birmingham Jail written by Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, April 4, in the Church Chapel. King’s letter from Birmingham Jail was addressed to white clergy and churches. One excerpt from the letter states, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Johnson steps in as CCE’s K-12 outreach coordinator
Todd Johnson started at Goshen College as the K-12 outreach coordinator for the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) on March 16. Courtney Ropp had previously held the role until she resigned earlier this year. Cyneatha Millsaps, the CCE’s executive director, said, “We had several candidates apply. Bowling teams coming to GC
The newest sport coming to Goshen College is one of the oldest games in human history: bowling. It can trace its roots back almost 5,000 years, but for GC, the sport will become a part of the athletic department within the next two years. Ervick speaks on the importance of Title IX
On Tuesday, Goshen students had the opportunity to attend a convocation to hear from Kelcey Ervick about the history of Title IX and its importance to the history of women’s sports. Atkinson resigns as tennis coach

Bontrager adds on VP for finance role
After just over a year of working at Goshen College as a vice president for finance and the college’s chief financial officer (CFO), Jim Alvarez resigned from his administrative roles last month on Feb. 1. Ben Bontrager, previously serving as the school’s chief operating officer (COO), has taken over his responsibilities and the titles of VP for finance and CFO. After just three full semesters at Goshen College, campus pastor Cathy Stoner has resigned. Students received an email Tuesday afternoon from Stoner, announcing that with “great sadness,” she was resigning as campus pastor. “It brought a lot of stress,” said Madeleine Kelly-Kellogg, a sophomore on the Spiritual Connection Team that works directly with Stoner. “It was just so out of the blue.” Many students shared Kelly-Kellogg’s sentiment of surprise and rumors began circulating immediately. Goshen Monologues celebrates 10th anniversary
A group of students identifying with the feminine experience performed at the 10th annual Goshen Monologues last Saturday, sharing powerful stories about relationships, privilege, campus dynamics and identity. Goshen Monologues began in 2014 and was initially inspired by The Vagina Monologues, a 1996 episodic play by Eve Ensler that explores sexuality, body image and femininity. The student-led tradition has continued every year since then. 91.1 The Globe travels to New York for IBS Media Awards
Goshen College communication department members traveled to New York City for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Media Awards over spring break. The IBS focuses on those who wish to pursue a career in film, radio, television or other forms of media. Nine members from 91.1 The Globe, GlobeTV and FiveCore Media were present for the awards ceremony. Kemboi adds another All-American honor
Nelson Kemboi, a junior nursing major, competed in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Brookings, South Dakota, on March 3 and 4. With a time of 8 minutes and 26.43 seconds, he finished sixth in the country in the 3,000-meter (1.86-mile) race. Breaking the school record, he placed sixth in the country and was granted the All-American title, which is only awarded to the top eight in the country in each event. Green wins Peace Oratorical Contest
Jakyra Green won first place in the C. Henry Smith Oratorical Contest on Tuesday evening with her speech, “The Privilege of Peace.” Her speech focused on the illusion or privilege surrounding peace for Black people and their realities in America. The culmination of several months’ work was showcased as competitors gave their speeches.
