Artist’s Corner: Professor Ann Hostetler
Though Ann Hostetler’s career has led her to teach in the Goshen College English Department and pursue a personal interest in poetry; her own years as an undergraduate student at Kenyon College were focused around a major in art. Despite her busy workload as a professor, Hostetler has still found time to draw and paint. “While I’ve taught here, I’ve taken a few classes from Judy Wenig-Horswell and John Blosser,” said Hostetler, “and that’s been really fun. When I paint I usually work in oils; I don’t like acrylics. Once I took a watercolor course, too.” Although she thinks her...

Artist Corner: Emma Gerig
“Oh, just let me make another print! Almost ready.” Emma Gerig, a sophomore art major, hurries over to her desk to finish a new addition to her collection of hand-made greeting cards. Bending over a flat pane of glass, Gerig picks up a stamp tool and a folded piece of cardstock. Brushing some black paint onto the glass surface, Gerig presses the stamp first to the glass and then to the front of the cardstock. “It’s a carrot!” says Gerig, holding up the expertly crafted greeting card with a rustic illustration of a carrot stamped on its front. “This is...

Artist’s Corner: Tim Landes
Tim Landes, a junior art major, likes to make things, but the is interested in more than just producing art: his sculptures are an exercise in recycling and giving attention to the forgotten. “In sculpture, I work with what I find,” said Landes. “I focus on what is cast off and forgotten about by society and then combine and transform it into something new that is a composite of what I have found.” Landes’ interest in sculpture was fueled by a welding course he took at a community college in Albuquerque, N.M. during a year of service between high school...

Cooperman exhibit showcases “Disparate Elements”
Visiting artist Andy Cooperman designs jewelry that is meant to be more than mere accessory. His current exhibition, entitled “Disparate Elements,” will be displayed from Jan. 29 to Feb. 19 in Hershberger Gallery. His focus as an “academic jeweler” and metalsmith is to look at jewelry not only as a functional embellishment, but also as a concept. “What I do as a maker is to create something thoughtful and dynamic that also brings together things that might not necessarily go together,” said Cooperman. “Pieces which aren’t necessarily greater than the sum of the constituent.” A practicing metalsmith for over 30...

Artist’s Corner: Anna Ruth, Emma Ruth, Lydia Yoder by Twila Albrecht
Emma Ruth, Anna Ruth and Lydia Yoder spent three hours this past Sunday in the art building, experimenting with a new style of 3-dimensional art. Emma Ruth, a sophomore sociology major, was inspired by the work of artist Alexa Meade, who paints on the body in order to transform a 3-D plane into a 2-D perception. Interested in trying the project for herself, Emma Ruth asked her sister, senior English major Anna Ruth, and Yoder, a junior environmental science major, if they would paint her using this technique. They began the process by painting a background for Emma to stand...

Tsigi partners with Goshen Arts Center for “Experimental Studio”
The Goshen Art Center has, for the past four months, been developing a wider sphere of influence in the larger Goshen community through its new location on Lincoln Street. Abi Tsigi, a photographer and 2011 graduate of Goshen College, has been renting space for his budding photography company, Ras Studio. Out of the nine rooms that the Goshen Arts Center calls home above the Republican Headquarters in downtown Goshen, Tsigi uses two for gallery space, one for studio and office space and the remaining he shares with the other tenants and artists of GAC. Those artists include painters, musicians, potters...

Artist’s Corner: Yoder practices Miksang contemplative photography
Josh Yoder had never owned a camera before this summer. In preparation for his fall S.S.T. in Peru, the sophomore environmental science major purchased a simple point and shoot, not only to document his experience but to pursue a spiritual discipline. Several years ago, Yoder learned about the Buddhist photography practice called “Miksang.” Translating to “good eye,” Miksang is a contemplative approach to photography with the goal of paying attention to simple, daily wonders.“I’ve never taken pictures before and am definitely not a gifted photographer,” Yoder said, “but this is a good way for me to be more in tune...

Exhibit showcases students’ associations with “North and South”
Bird migration, lives spent between two cultures and the Occupy Wall Street movement are just some of the themes that Goshen College artists brought to pieces for the “North and South” exhibit currently on display in the Good Library gallery. This is the second year that the art department, along with the GC art club, organized a thematic exhibition of student work. Artists were given the open-ended theme “North and South” in the fall semester, and used various media to create work that related this theme to personal understanding or experience. Artists created a diversity of responses and also composed...

Artist’s Corner – Abbie Miller
Abbie Miller seldom strays far from her Nikon D50. Miller, a third-year interdisciplinary Major from Wellman, Iowa, favors photography as her medium of choice due to its instinctual nature. “Photography doesn’t require finding an amazing scene,” she said. “Your eye knows what is interesting.” According to Miller, the photographer must consider a number of elements, mainly light, angle and structure, when setting up a shot. “You play with these effects and get a photo that only you would take,” Miller said. One such photo that represents Miller’s artistic touch was captured in response to this year’s Student Art Show theme...

Creating community around a canvas
Anyone could have grabbed a marker, colored pencil or crayon and contributed to the large poster in the Connector on Friday and Saturday. The Goshen College Art Club organized the supplies for this community project, designed to get people involved in art, even those who don't think of themselves as artists. Even though Friday's rain caused the poster to be moved indoors, it is full of drawings, magazine clippings and collaborative designs. The finished product will eventually be displayed in Java Junction. "We wanted to get everyone involved," said Justine Maust, co-leader of the art club. "We wanted to help...

The exhibit, featuring artwork by John Blosser, Kristi Glick, Randy Horst, Merrill Krabill and John Mishler, opened on Sept. 25 will remain through Nov. 27. Its opening reception is on Oct. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. Kristi Glick, assistant professor of art, praises the act of sharing personal art with a larger community, especially with one’s students. According to her, the level of vulnerability required in sharing art adds a new element to teaching. “It not only has the potential...

Kristi Glick: Cultivating the creative spark
Kristi Glick didn’t give herself an easy summer, instead she pursued her artistic endeavors outside of Goshen College. At the beginning of this month, Glick received first place in the enamel category at the 13th Biennial Alchemy International Juried Exhibition. Her winning jewelry piece is titled “Imagination Moons” and will travel with the Alchemy International traveling exhibition, which will make stops throughout Tennessee. Glick also guest-taught at Arizona Designer Craftsman after the company asked her to give a two-day workshop on metal work in art. The topic includes a wide range of subjects such as jewelry, sculpture and enameling, but Glick’s specific...

Painting the picture of the art department
For many art majors at Goshen College, the pull towards the department is more than just the work – it’s the building they inhabit. “The art building rocks!” said Emma Gerig, a first-year art major. “I did a mix of science and art classes but I ended up really liking the art department, people and professors. It’s a nice supportive community.” Enrollment in the art department has ranged from 30-60 over the past decade but this year, art weighs in as a solidly popular field of study, with 48 majors. This is also the first year in a number of...
