New throwing coach: ‘You got to keep digging’
Goshen College’s track and field team now has all-star experience with the hiring of Tyler Miller, a former Purdue thrower, to coach the Maple Leafs throwing team. Miller, who grew up in Goshen, has decided to come back to his roots, coaching the throwers at his home college. “His background really helped him, making him a really good coach,” said Nick Hofer, a first-year thrower. Liam Shaw, a sophomore thrower, said, “I may have had four weeks of throwing practice with him and the amount of belief I have in myself again is insane.” He continued, “Tyler gives us this...

Track and field season preview
The Goshen College men’s and women’s track and field teams will open their season this Saturday, traveling south for the Mastodon Invite at Purdue Fort Wayne. With the departure of former track and field head coach Sean Foulkes after their team’s outdoor season in 2024, the coaching responsibilities are being shared by Rustin Nyce, director of track and field operations, and Lisa Voyles, associate head coach. Voyles was hired in August, and is an eight-time national track and field champion and a 13-time All American. “[Voyles has] done a really good job of incorporating other things that we have kind...

Letter to the editor
I would like to take the time to respond to Kevin Liddell’s article in last week’s Record. My initial response is to want to minimize the negative feelings that the article may have caused other athletes, coaches and people on campus to feel. Except, what Kevin said is true. And I want the members of our team to know I support them and how they feel. It is true that the track and cross country teams consistently perform at the national level. To date, there have been 26 national championships between cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Goshen College...

Track and field at ‘a high level’
On Saturday, January 20, the Goshen College men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Purdue University Fort Wayne to compete in a meet with Trine University, Purdue University Fort Wayne, Indiana Wesleyan University and Wright State University. Goshen performed well in a variety of events on both the men’s and women’s teams, and a few individuals excelled in their particular events. In women’s weight throw, Willow Kenneda finished fifth, while Kaitlyn Johnson and Theresa Rodriguez placed 16th and 17th, respectively. Kassidy Faler placed fifth in the women’s pole vault with a height of 2.50 meters. Evan O’Toole placed second in...

Owning your identity
A Hispanic-Serving Institution has to have at least 25% of its full-time undergraduate students identify as Hispanic for consecutive years. In athletics, though, only 16.3% of student-athletes identify themselves as Hispanic, according to Justin DeWeese, assistant athletic director of communications. So, what does it mean to be a student-athlete as a Hispanic individual? Stephany Claudio, a junior psychology major, spoke about how she ended up running at GC. At first, Claudio ran for fun, but when high school started, she came to the realization that she needed to find a way to pay for college. “I felt pressured to just...

Track and field moves outside
Last Saturday, the men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to Cedarville, Ohio to compete in the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open. The Leafs’ day began early with a 5:00 a.m. departure from Goshen. The weather conditions were less than ideal for an outdoor meet, as the team faced winds of 29 mph and gusts up to 54 mph. Additionally, there was a lightning strike near Cedarville University facility that caused the meet to be delayed by an hour and a half. For the women’s track team, freshman Mady Axsom tied for fourth in the high jump with a height...

Athletics mid-season check-in
Now that Goshen College students have returned from spring break, spring sports are fully underway, with many teams reaching critical points in their seasons. Here’s a look into what they’ve accomplished so far, as well as what’s to come. The softball team is currently on a five-game win streak, after finishing up their spring break trip in Florida with three wins and two more yesterday against Bethel. They are currently 10-5 after the doubleheader victories. Neither game was close: The Leafs trounced the Pilots by 9-3 and 16-5 to put them at two wins and zero losses in conference play....

Track preps for conference
The men’s and women’s track and field teams will be traveling to Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) to compete in the Crossroads League Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. The last two weeks have been full of success — including breaking a school record. On Feb. 4, the Leafs competed at Indiana Wesleyan in the IWU Midwest Classic. The meet started off well for the Maple Leafs, with a National ‘A’ Standard by the women’s 4×800 relay. Juniors Summer Cooper and Mia Wellington, sophomore Stephany Claudio and freshman Britney Ortega ran a combined time of 9:43.28. This time earned them third...

The men’s team scored 22 points and placed 10th of 14 teams, and the women placed 14th of 14. On the women’s team, the field events were led by our star thrower, Willow Kenneda, a junior. Marathon qualifier doesn’t let epilepsy slow her down
Teresa Richer qualified for track and field nationals in the marathon on Saturday by running a time of 3:28:50 in the Saint Paddy’s Marathon in Des Moines, Iowa. A first-year exercise science major at Goshen College, Richer is the school’s only marathon runner this year. She qualified by running nearly five minutes faster than the “A” standard of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Richer had planned to start classes in the fall after graduating high school in 2021, but opted to take the semester off to undergo testing for her epilepsy. Both Richer and her doctors thought it...

Track athletes end indoor season with All-American titles
The track team finished off their season at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) indoor track and field championships in Brookings, South Dakota on March 4, breaking three school records and tying one. Although they have continued to succeed both this season and past seasons, this success is no coincidence. It has taken hard work, commitment and dedication, said three track athletes: Annika Alderfer Fisher, a sophomore; Simon Graber Miller, a senior; and Samuel Stoner-Eby, a junior. “I think patience and persistence made it possible,” Alderfer Fisher said. “I have had several seasons with personal performance that was not...

Goshen athletes break records at Crossroads League Championships
Goshen College women’s and men’s indoor track and field teams competed in the Crossroads League Championships this past Friday and Saturday. The women’s team tied for seventh and the men’s team placed ninth, with numerous records and standards set along the way. “I felt energized and excited about the weekend,” said Rustin Nyce, head coach for the teams. “Each athlete stepped up with a season best, lifetime best, school record, and/or a national standard.” The women’s 4 x 800-meter relay, composed of Annika Alderfer Fisher, Naomi Ross Richer, Mia Wellington and Summer Cooper started Friday’s meet off strong, setting a school...

From non-athlete to record-setter in a year
Breaking school records isn’t on most students’ weekend agendas, but for Samuel Stoner-Eby, it has become a regular occurrence. Last weekend was no exception. On Friday, Jan. 28, the junior crushed Goshen College’s 200-meter record by .56 seconds, with a time of 22.32 seconds. After being converted for the track size, his time was 21.93 seconds, a time that qualified him for the NAIA National Track Championships, held this year in North Dakota. Stoner-Eby was just getting started. Already owning Goshen’s 400-meter record, he broke it again on Saturday with a time of 49.92 seconds. After the conversion, this time...

Maldonado’s seven-second dash into the record book
Maria Maldonado can run a 60-meter sprint faster than any runner in Goshen College history. She also holds the GC record for the 200-meter dash in both indoor and outdoor track. A sophomore who moved to Goshen from Venezuela three years ago, Maldonado is determined not to stop there. Maldonado found her love for track at age 13, following in the steps of her father and uncle who both had a gift for running. When she was young, an olympic coach told Maldonado she had the potential to be a great runner; she hasn’t looked back since. “I was like,...
