Hispanic first-generation student-athletes share stories
Arleth Martinez, a senior sociology major, runs cross country along with track and field. She didn’t even run in high school. Before moving to Goshen in 2017, Martinez was running in California. “But then when I moved to Goshen High School, I was like ‘new people, scary, I’m not doing this,’” she recounted. With her time away from running, Martinez wasn’t sure how joining the team in college would go. “I did think it was gonna be, like, pretty stressful trying to manage my time and figure it out,” she said. “But I’ve actually found that to me, it’s sort...

Bowling teams coming to GC
The newest sport coming to Goshen College is one of the oldest games in human history: bowling. It can trace its roots back almost 5,000 years, but for GC, the sport will become a part of the athletic department within the next two years. Athletic director Erica Albertin said the goal is to have the teams start in the 2023-24 school year. “We need the coach first before we can set up schedules,” she said. “We have some good connections, and we’re actively searching for the new coach. If we get too far into the Spring, the teams will likely not...

Athletic department spotlights mental health
On Monday, over 250 of Goshen College’s student athletes gathered for a conversation about mental health. According to nationwide trends reported by the National Institute of Health (NIH), it’s likely that 50 or more of these student athletes could be struggling with mental illness. The seminar was put on by GC’s athletic department to shine a spotlight on the issue of athlete mental health. Marathon qualifier doesn’t let epilepsy slow her down
Teresa Richer qualified for track and field nationals in the marathon on Saturday by running a time of 3:28:50 in the Saint Paddy’s Marathon in Des Moines, Iowa. A first-year exercise science major at Goshen College, Richer is the school’s only marathon runner this year. She qualified by running nearly five minutes faster than the “A” standard of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Richer had planned to start classes in the fall after graduating high school in 2021, but opted to take the semester off to undergo testing for her epilepsy. Both Richer and her doctors thought it...

Michael Wahl reaches 3,000 assists
Michael Wahl, a fifth-year ASL major from Canton, Ohio, broke the 3,000 assist mark on Wednesday, March 16. Wahl is currently leading in total assists in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and is third in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for total assists. “[3,000 assists] was my biggest personal goal so it was really great to reach that,” Wahl said. “It feels nice to finally feel like all this hard work that I’m putting in is finally paying off for something.” Although 3,000 assists is a huge personal accomplishment for any setter, Wahl attributes this milestone to more...

Ri Koteles, a fifth-year softball player, recently broke the school record in walks and doubles. I sat down with her to discuss her success. Q: How is your season going so far? A: We started off our season really strong during our spring break in California. We faced great competition and got a great feel on how to work together, what our individual roles are, and how to be most successful. From non-athlete to record-setter in a year
Breaking school records isn’t on most students’ weekend agendas, but for Samuel Stoner-Eby, it has become a regular occurrence. Last weekend was no exception. On Friday, Jan. 28, the junior crushed Goshen College’s 200-meter record by .56 seconds, with a time of 22.32 seconds. After being converted for the track size, his time was 21.93 seconds, a time that qualified him for the NAIA National Track Championships, held this year in North Dakota. Stoner-Eby was just getting started. Already owning Goshen’s 400-meter record, he broke it again on Saturday with a time of 49.92 seconds. After the conversion, this time...

Maldonado’s seven-second dash into the record book
Maria Maldonado can run a 60-meter sprint faster than any runner in Goshen College history. She also holds the GC record for the 200-meter dash in both indoor and outdoor track. A sophomore who moved to Goshen from Venezuela three years ago, Maldonado is determined not to stop there. Maldonado found her love for track at age 13, following in the steps of her father and uncle who both had a gift for running. When she was young, an olympic coach told Maldonado she had the potential to be a great runner; she hasn’t looked back since. “I was like,...

The journey to nationals
On Friday, April 9, the Goshen College men’s cross country team competed at the NAIA National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They finished 22nd in the nation. This is the story of the runners and how they did it. The huddle of seven runners formed a purple polka-dot on the field spotted with teams in every color of the rainbow. It was a few minutes before 12:30 p.m. and humid, but not raining, although rain from the day before had already turned the ground to mud. The air was thick with energy. “One, two three, Huwezi kufa!” The team from...

Graber Miller’s routine to defy gravity
Deep breathing. Doesn’t seem like an intense process, but it is actually one of the key components to a successful high jump for junior All-American track and field star Simon Graber Miller. On Mar. 6, Graber Miller shattered Goshen College’s previous high jump record with an incredible height of 6 feet, 8 1/8 inches. But for Graber Miller, one broken record was not enough. The next jump placed him at 6 feet, 10 3/4 inches off of the ground, a feat that broke his own record. The jump also placed Graber Miller at the number three spot in the country...

Top runner returns to race again
Though Salvador Escamilla is often seen running across campus, sporting a “Running Sucks” T-shirt, he takes running very seriously. But after recent trouble with a nagging pain in the heel, he decided to spend a few days training on his bike. And soon, Escamilla’s love for running was compromised. While riding down the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail he collided with a pickup truck as he crossed a road. The impact sent him flying off his bike and left him in bad shape. Despite the injuries, he remained conscious, and as people arrived at the scene he said, “I’ve got to race.”...

‘Running for my life’
When Dr. Scott Trumble called Victor Kiprop Kiprotich into his office on Wednesday Feb. 5 and asked him how important running is to him, he said “very.” Being born and raised in Kenya, Kiprop, a sophomore nursing major at Goshen College, grew up running. Kenya is known as a breeding ground for many of the most successful distance runners in the world. “We all ran back and forth from school, to the stores and on errands around home,” Kiprop said. Kiprop remembers running into elite athletes on the roads near his home on a daily basis. “It was so common...

GC athlete finds ‘adrenaline rush’ in bull riding
In basketball and bull riding, time is everything. A basketball player is granted ten seconds to advance the ball over the mid-court line before receiving a violation. In bull riding, a rider attempts to stay atop the bull for eight seconds. For Austin Branagan, a sophomore from Lowell, Michigan, he’s familiar with both. A forward on the GC men’s basketball team, Branagan grew up playing basketball and football from a young age. But in the past year, he has tapped into a newly discovered passion influenced by years spent on his family farm: bull riding. “It’s kind of like the...
