‘Clubs bring energy’ to involvement fair
On Wednesday, Sept. 3, immediately following the first chapel of the semester — where campus pastor Jen Shenk introduced the year’s theme, “The Time Is Now” — Goshen College hosted its annual Clubs, Organizations and Affinities Fair. The event gave student leaders the opportunity to showcase their passions and invite others to join the vibrant extracurricular life on campus. In a previous article for The Record, Kate Bodiker wrote, “Some of the most notable [clubs] that seem a bit far-fetched today are groups like the Aero Club … in which students paid roughly $390 to receive their private pilot’s license,”...

Voces Fuertes: ‘for the rights of everyone’
“Voces Fuertes” means “strong voices,” and it is also the name of the new immigrant advocacy group on campus that will be making its official debut on Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m. in Schrock Plaza. This group has been in the works for some time, meeting weekly since spring break as they prepared to have at least one event before the semester was over. Areli Guzman, a senior biochemistry major and one of the founders of Voces Fuertes, made reference to racist remarks in bills such as HB 3133, an antiterrorism act passed in Oklahoma, and executive orders by...

The Goshen College baseball team boasts the biggest roster on campus, with 41 current players. Brad Stoltzfus is in his second year as head coach after spending five years in the assistant head coach position. One of Stoltzfus’ accomplishments over the past two years was to bring change to the culture within the team. Stoltzfus outlined his ambition for the team when he was appointed as head coach. He said, “My goal coming in, one of the major focuses for me last year, was kind of getting the Goshen college baseball culture to a good spot. We want it where,...

APIDA hosts first ever staring contest
A staring contest — possibly one of the first games we ever learned how to play. The goal is to out-stare your opponent. As young children, this game brought out light-hearted joy and competitive spirits. The Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Student Union decided to spark some of these light-hearted memories throughout campus with their own staring contest. On Tuesday, March 25, APIDA, formally known as the Asian Student Association, hosted a staring contest, with the winner walking away with sore eyes, a free t-shirt and a $50 cash prize. Jason DuBois, the president of APIDA, was thrilled about the...

Student Senate Summary 02/13
Student Senate met on Monday in their new meeting place, the Mark Community Room in Westlawn, across from the entrance to the dining hall. The meeting began with Aaliah Higareda, president of the art club, who came with a proposal for a club fair in the second semester. Higareda noted that the only club fair of the year happens during orientation week. “Returning students don’t get the opportunity to look at the new clubs,” Higareda said. “And also new clubs form all the time.” The proposal was received positively by the senate, and ideas were tossed around for a club...

Campus leaders celebrate MLK Day
On Monday, Jan. 20, Goshen College hosted a student-led convocation in the Church-Chapel to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event was followed by a short march to the Recreation-Fitness Center, where participants engaged in activities such as interactive stations and raffles while enjoying snacks and drinks. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader who fought for racial equality and justice through nonviolent activism in the United States. On the campus of GC, his achievements and history are annually celebrated. This year, students in the Black Student Union, Advocates (LGBTQIA+ advocacy),...

‘Decorate Your Own Piñata’ with Art Club and LSU
This past Friday, the Art Club and Latino Student Union hosted a Decorate Your Own Piñata event. Aaliah Higareda, Art Club president and junior graphic design major, and Kena Oropeza, an LSU leader and senior marketing major, are two of the many minds who put together the event. When asked about the planning behind the event, Oropeza said, “We wrote down ideas that were not done by LSU in prior school years and tried to think of creative events. I was the one who wrote down decorating piñatas because I thought a craft event would be fun, engaging and unique.” ...

Fashion show highlights sustainability and inclusivity
Last Friday, EcoPax and Advocates hosted their first fashion show and clothing swap in Newcomer 19. The event brought over 50 students, and highlighted the importance of sustainability in fashion, alongside the potential for personal style to be empowering. Advocates is Goshen College’s LGBTQ+ affinity group, with Lydia Esh, a senior social work major, and Peace Muhagachi, a senior sociology major, as vice president and president respectively. Esh said the planning was stressful since the event happened so soon after fall break. “We were trying to figure out all the things before break hit, and it felt a little bit...

Campus clubs collaborate
Throughout campus, clubs provide students with entertainment and connections outside of their usual circles. This semester, clubs have joined forces, creating partnerships that fuse the values of student groups on campus. EcoPax and Advocates as well as the Latino Student Union and the Art Club have recently experimented with such collaborations. Carmen Merino, senior biology major, the vice president of the Student Senate and president of EcoPax, has made it her personal mission to create room for all clubs and students among events on campus. “As someone who’s been here for four years, I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of...

This year marks the beginning of the Muslim Student Association on campus. Mona Galeb, a junior nursing major, and Ashwaq Aldhuraibi, a sophomore psychology major, are the founders and leaders of this new group with Noah Lederach, academic coach, who serves as the faculty advisor. “We came up with the idea during the spring of 2024, during a meeting regarding Gaza, with President Rebecca Stoltzfus, Gilbetro Perez Jr. [vice president for student life and Hispanic serving initiatives] and Jen Shenk [campus pastor],” Galeb and Aldhuraibi said in a joint email. “After this our process began and during the summer we...

Sweeping and sliding on Merry Lea ice
Students and faculty gathered on the ice of Kesling Wetland at Merry Lea on Sunday for the second annual broomball tournament hosted by the Goshen College Outdoor Pursuits Club. Merry Lea has been organizing broomball games for over 15 years. It all started when a student, Lisa Zinn, found out about the game over a decade ago and brought it to the small wetland in Indiana. Broomball is a very simple game and only requires a few items to play: solid ice, a ball, goals and around a dozen old brooms. It is a combination of hockey and soccer. Students...

Autism spectrum disorder social group seeks inclusivity
In the fall of 2020, Brooke Lemmon, professor of education and director of special education, launched an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) social group. The group, which meets for an hour once a week, has grown to consist of six regularly attending members, including three first-year students and three sophomores. Participants do not require a formal diagnosis: “Anyone who believes they have an ASD is welcome regardless of diagnosis.” Lemmon said. “We will focus on topics and strategies specific to people with ASD like social communication, restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior, and sensory needs.” Lemmon’s Ph.D. research explores “high impact ableism...

Art Club gets the ball rolling with masquerade party
Friday evening marked the Art Club’s inaugural Masquerade Ball and it was a smashing success. With approximately 100 masked attendees throughout the night, the club’s leaders, Nasim Rasoulipour, Joel Lara, Lexus Garces, and Yejin Kim, agree that it is likely to be a repeat event. “I think all of us art club leaders were really blown away by how well attended the event was,” said Garces, a senior biology student. Rasoulipour, Art Club president and senior interdisciplinary student, echoed that, saying, “My favorite part was when everyone was having a great time and started a dance circle and enjoyed their...

Esports comes to Goshen
This summer, 16-year-old Pennsylvania native Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf became the first Fortnite World Cup Champion, earning the $3 million grand prize. The three-day tournament was the first of its kind for Fortnite and a sign of what’s to come in the esports world. This year, Goshen College has hopped on the esports train, as a newfound student-run club has gained the attention of students on campus. Last year, Hugh Birky, a junior, found himself spending countless hours with other GC students playing Rocket League, a growing game in esports. He saw the value in his time spent playing Rocket League...

A journey of self-discovery and yoga
If you need a break from school, take a year off to teach yoga. That’s Reed Yoder’s strategy, a 21 year-old Goshen resident who was a junior studying social work at Goshen College. Yoder is taking a gap year to teach yoga in the fall, and plans to travel to India to study the practice this spring. Last year, Yoder was at a crossroads in his life. He said he felt like he needed to focus on personal growth and was unsure whether or not social work was what he wanted to do. But one thing he has always been...
