Showcase and shine: digital portfolio workshop
For the first time, on Wednesday, March 19, Career Networks and the Academic Success Center hosted a workshop to strengthen portfolio-building skills, an event they hope to make an annual occurrence. David Kendall, director of Career Networks, said that a portfolio is incredibly important and that “this idea was born out of a necessity to have that conversation, and to put really dynamic, smart, great people in front of students to give them information that will be helpful.” The workshop was titled “Showcase and Shine.” The guest speakers were Anna Parker, the vice president of marketing at Patrick Industries, and...

Meet Maryn Munely, performance venue production manager
A few years ago, hundreds of people filled Sauder Concert Hall for the annual Music Gala during Homecoming weekend. All Maryn Munley needed to do was move the restored Steinway grand piano, worth $120,000, to the center of the stage. By herself. Matthew Hill, a Goshen College music professor, was waiting in the wings to enter and play a piece by Beethoven. “Well, I’m a fairly petite person,” said Munley, the performance venue production manager for Goshen College. “So usually, it takes a little bit more muscle than just me to get that piano rolling.” The stage was set up...

Super Tuesday provides opportunities for students
Super Tuesday provided students with an opportunity to hone their interview skills in a realistic setting on Nov. 10. Twice a year, the alumni and career networks department brings in professionals from the broader community to hold mock interviews with GC students. The department makes an effort to match a student’s academic discipline to an employer in that field. On top of the interview itself, the professionals give students feedback on what went well and things to improve. “I got feedback that was really helpful,” said Sohail Das, sophomore accounting major. “Even though it’s a mock interview,” said Mikhail Fernandez,...

Super Tuesday returns to GC
On Tuesday, February 17, more than 50 students will be participating in mock interviews during the Super Tuesday event. Alumni and Career Networks Coordinator Melissa Kinsey said that Super Tuesday is in its tenth year this year. “The event was originally started as a result of a Lilly grant to encourage colleges and universities to develop programs to help students gain experiential education,” said Kinsey. “One of the goals of the grant was to encourage students to work for Indiana companies, thereby eliminating Indiana Brain Drain,” explained Kinsey. “Goshen College is seen as a net importer of intellectual capital by...

Super Tuesday Grooms Young Professionals
The college Church-Chapel fellowship hall was a staging ground for budding new professionals last Tuesday afternoon. "This year went like clockwork," said GC director of career services, Anita Yoder. At Super Tuesday, 64 students met with 18 interviewers over a few short hours, and each interview lasted roughly 30 to 45 minutes. The interviews were modeled after a real-life interview scenario, in which questions were strategically asked of the students to gauge their skills as listeners, problem solvers and conflict resolvers. After a 20-minute interview, the students were given advice on how to improve their interviewing skills and how to...
