$1 Million Dollar Grant to Fund Career Preparation
In November, Goshen College was awarded a $1 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to support career planning opportunities and entrepreneurship for students on campus. The grant, which is given over five years, will fund an endowment to continue the Student Entrepreneurship Grant Program, as well as a “Pathways to Career” program currently in development, which will, among other things, create a fellowship program to connect graduates with career opportunities. This is the third grant the Lilly Endowment has given the college in the last 10 years. GC was among 39 schools in Indiana to receive the funding. The Endowment’s...

Across six school districts and with 28 student teachers, Goshen College’s elementary and secondary education majors have been teaching since August 2. “What’s so exciting is that our student teachers are starting from day one,” said Karen Kreider Yoder, an associate education professor. “They’re out there doing it.” Kevin Gary, an associate education professor and director of secondary education, said, “Teaching is a craft that uses the old apprentice model. That’s what is exciting, daunting, and important about student teaching.” The student teachers began their semester, in true teacher fashion, by attending meetings. GC student finds a voice in local radio
Yolo Lopez-Perez, a senior broadcasting major and youth ministry minor, landed a co-host DJ position at WFRN-FM (104.7). This position helped Lopez-Perez expand her broadcasting skills from Goshen College’s GCTV to a regular weekend position at a local radio station. When asked to describe a typical day at her new job, Lopez-Perez said her weekend routine is a 7:30 a.m. wake-up call and a quick breakfast. She then heads to the station 10 minutes before her 8:30 a.m. shift. Lopez-Perez joined a successful co-host, Deb Marie, who helped Perez to see that her unpaid internship hours could open doors for...

Professors reveal odd jobs on their resume
Dean Rhodes Dean Rhodes, an associate professor of Spanish and chair of the Spanish department, can lecture at length about Spanish accents or the topography of Peru, where he lived for several years. As it turns out, he can also speak in great detail about the artificial insemination of cows. Rhodes used to be an artificial dairy cow inseminator—a fancy title for a not-so-glamorous job that involves placing a “sleeved arm into the cow via the rectum, while sliding a pipette with the [bull’s] semen into the vagina.” After graduating from the University of Iowa, Rhodes held several jobs related...

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, unemployment dropped from 10 percent to 9.7 percent nationally this past month, scoring a small victory for the struggling U.S. economy. With so few jobs available for graduates, Goshen College’s Career Services is trying to prepare students for the bleak job market. Super Tuesday, a mock interview event where students talk with professionals and are given feedback on their presentation, was held this past Tuesday in the College Church’s Fellowship Hall.
