Ramseyers bring three times the fun
Ask Mary, Elise and Jenna Ramseyer what it’s like to be a triplet, and they might not know how to answer. “We don’t know what it’s like to not be a triplet!” said Jenna. Said Mary, “It’s normal… for us!” The girls are juniors this year, and though they share many similarities, they have unique personalities and different majors. Elise believes that their individual interests were evident since they were young. One example was Christmas 1996. Before this day, their parents were dedicated to making sure each gift they gave the girls was exactly the same. “[Our mom] would count...

Seniors prepare for Pan-American bike trip
Ask Abe Stucky, Levi Smucker and Michael Miller what they’re doing after college. Their answer won’t follow the average student’s post-graduation plan: They’re biking from Paraguay to Goshen. The men plan to attend the Anabaptist History course in Paraguay this May. Then they’ll meet up with Matthew Helmuth, a former Goshen College student, mount their saddles and cycle across South America. If all goes well, they’ll cruise into Goshen ten months later, in March 2014. Their idea began in 2010 through talks on their Miller 1 dorm couch. But Miller described their vision as a “pipe dream,” something they thought...

Love stories from GC faculty and students
Richard Aguirre and Judy Weaver When Richard Aguirre and Judy Weaver met, neither knew they would both end up working at Goshen College. In 1981, the fall after Judy graduated from Goshen College, she began an internship with the Santa Barbara News-Press in Santa Barbara, Calif. She and Richard, who was working at the paper, sat nearby each other in the newsroom. They first spoke when Judy was assigned to shadow Richard while he worked as a court reporter. “She thought I walked too fast and I thought she walked too fast!” he said. Richard offered Judy a ride home...

Live from Schrock Plaza
The installation of “CampusCam,” a live video feed of Schrock Plaza available online, garnered a mix of reactions from students and alumni when it was announced on the Goshen College Facebook page this Nov. A common student response, both on and off the Facebook page, has been along the lines of “that’s creepy,” while other commenters noted the branches that obstruct the view or the slightly off-balance shot. The live feed is available to anyone on the Goshen College Website at www.goshen.edu/pr/webcam. “I just think it’s creepy,” said Natasha Weisenbeck, a junior public relations major. Rachel Smucker, also a junior...

Night at the RFC offered something for everyone
This past Friday, the Recreation-Fitness Center extended its hours to 1:00 a.m. so that students could stop in for food, recreation and considerable stress relief. All of the RFC’s usual services such as the rock wall and swimming pool were available, but several new options were also offered. Nearly 150 students packed the gym, lining up to participate in the many featured activities. Among these were an inflatable obstacle course and a moon bounce that doubled as a boxing ring. One student suggested that the padded contact sports were a much-needed means to release anxiety felt by otherwise nonviolent and stressed...

For the Record 1/26 – A call to all first-years: let’s hang out!
Hypothetical situation: I’m sitting in the dining hall, eating my fair share of something that’s not fish, and a person I’ve never seen before, a first-year student perchance, walks in. Realistic reaction from me: instant judgment! As much as it pains me to admit it (OK, fine, it’s not much pain), I have a habit of immediately judging people based on their looks, attire, stride, entourage and general vibes I receive. I realize that this make me seem like a jerk, which very well could be true, but I have no remorse about that. Truly, if I feel bad about...

Bike-friendly surround sound
Strange. Unique. Individual. Fun. All of these words have been used to describe the “Party Chariot,” the chariot-esque implement that has been seen trailing behind a merlot-colored bike around campus. In essence, the Party Chariot is a set of speakers connected to a car battery and a cord that can attach to an mp3 player or portable CD player. The Chariot was designed by two students who happened to be rugball players. Thus it turned into a feature at rugball games and gatherings. This piece of Goshen College student history is handed down through the “generations,” each year getting passed...

The Kansas Bible Company: Nashville’s next young professionals?
If you have ever been anywhere near the Coffman suites while the Kansas Bible Company is practicing, you know that the group has a sound that is all their own. Lead singer and guitarist Jake Miller (2010 alumnus) founded KBC in the fall of 2008. Other original members include 2010 alumnus Luke Yoder, senior Mike Ruth, senior Jake Snyder, junior Charlie Frederick, senior James Green, and 2010 alumnus Rafael Chavez. The band took a yearlong hiatus before coming back with a vengeance in fall of 2010. They added four new members: junior Jeff Yoder, first-year Jacob Martin, senior Isaac Lederach,...

How to turn the campus into a fairway
Now that it’s springtime in Goshen, you’ll probably start noticing groups of students wandering around campus swinging at tennis balls with golf clubs. Don’t be alarmed, they are only playing a unique college sport called campus golf. The game is simple and is played like Frisbee golf. “It’s easy to play, and doesn’t take many resources,” said Marshal Watson, a sophomore. All you need is a tennis ball (it’s safer than a golf ball) and a golf club. Players choose targets on campus and then try to get their ball to touch the target with the fewest amount of strokes....

March Madness infects GC
It’s March Madness for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and this year’s annual March Madness tournament has held some rather large, and sometimes bitter, surprises. For those of you who don’t know about the NCAA tournament, this is for you. The bracket system is simple: win or go home. It’s a single elimination system. There are 68 teams this year; teams who have done the best in the regular season play the worst teams right away. This advantage clearly favors the better teams, but also is a recipe for some surprises, such as having a number eleven seed...

Venues for on-campus spirituality thrive
Although Goshen College is a Christian school, students ultimately choose the spiritual experience they want to receive. Students can fulfill their spiritual needs with chapels, worship gatherings or prayer times and are encouraged to seek out the fulfillment they need. For a personal type of spirituality, the role of ministry leader (ML) began three years ago. “The MLs are there to be a presence and organize programming for their floors,” said Bob Yoder, campus pastor. As a presence, they are there to talk to students who want spiritual guidance. After getting to know the people on their floor, they can...

GC continues climate commitment pledge
Some say that becoming a “climate neutral” campus is impossible. “So is world peace,” responds Glenn Gilbert, Goshen College utilities manager. Despite skepticism, GC has continued decreasing its carbon footprint. Three years ago, President Brenneman signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment and pledged to become a “climate neutral” college. The term “climate neutral” means that the amount of the campus’ net carbon emission would not add any carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Gilbert agrees that this seems like an unattainable goal—but nonetheless worth working towards. With the construction of buildings like the Rec-Fitness and Music Centers in...

Railway underpass gets green light
Two decades ago, Goshen College’s long term plans included a railway underpass. Thanks to the generosity of the City of Goshen and the college's persistence, the college is a few steps closer to breaking ground for the underpass. In a Goshen city council meeting about two years ago, the college received a matching grant from the city of Goshen. The council promised 80 percent of the necessary funding if Goshen College agreed to raise the final 20 percent. Initial discussions with Norfolk Southern Railway were discouraging, as the company insisted on closing all pedestrian railroad crossings in exchange for the...

Proposal for underpass at a standstill
Goshen College is at risk of losing a chance to install a railroad underpass, and nearly $2 million in federal funding to build it, because of an apparent impasse with the Norfolk Southern Railway. At the heart of the standoff is Norfolk Southern’s request that Goshen College eliminate other pedestrian railroad crossings on campus – as many as five – in exchange for adding the underpass. “Everyone who crosses the tracks would be expected to go under the single tunnel. That’s just not going to happen,” said Jim Histand, the vice president of finance at Goshen College. The college’s overall...

Revamping security at Goshen College
At a small college like Goshen, safety and security are often taken for granted. People recognize almost everyone on campus, so it's easy to forget that Goshen has a necessary security system in place at all times. In an effort to make our security more effective, the college has decided to revamp its system for next year. Bill Born, vice president of student life, and Jim Histand, vice president of finance, have been working on this project all semester. A task force was formed in January to determine if the current security is meeting the needs of students. The three areas...
