A Response To My Roommate
Like many of you, I was shocked and appalled last week at Mr. Kaufmann’s libelous attacks upon my character in his so called “private” letter to his roommate. Let me refute some of these scandalous lies plainly and clearly. Kaufmann claimed I have a pink poodle outfit. I think what he meant to write is that he himself has a pink poodle outfit. Furthermore, the harmful attacks upon my middle name were uncalled for. Lee is perhaps the manliest name known to humankind. The name Erin, however, is not. I should also point out that in German the root of...

A Letter to my Roommate
Dear Jacob, Lately I have felt very hurt by all the low blows that I have been receiving in The Record. You do not know what it is like to live in fear of which of my secrets might be reveled in the next issue. That is why I have found it of the utmost importance to tell you in the privacy of a direct letter between you and me. You do not know what it is like for me. I already have so many people make fun of my name. At least my middle name is not Lee. I...

The Name Game
Jacob Landis-Eigsti My kids are going to hate me. Although I am sure they will find hundreds of other reasons to hate me, probably the main reason is that there are just way too many gosh darn awesome names. Now, as I wrote the article on Goshen dating two weeks ago, I’m sure many of you are engaged and ready to begin picking out names. Hopefully with my thoughts about names, your kids can hate you just as much as mine are going to hate me. I think I am going to have to have 25 children so I can...

Big fun, small watermelons: Night at the RFC
Yoder Resident Director Jake Shipe had an ulterior motive in organizing the annual Night at the RFC, held last Friday. The main goal was for Goshen students to have fun (about 200 attended), but he also wanted to give the President’s Leadership Award applicants on campus for the weekend a feel for what they should expect at Goshen. Night at the RFC was planned to coincide with their visit. The Yoder resident assistant-organized event offered basketball, volleyball, racquetball, walleyball, an open climbing wall, yard games, Wii on a big screen and watermelon polo, led by Vice President for Student Life...

Midweek Mayhem a “Bouncy” Event
It’s sometime around the age of thirteen that McDonald’s stops being everyone’s favorite fast food restaurant. The fries taste the same and the hamburgers don’t change, but something does. It always happens—soon after kids realize that they are too old to play in the ball pit and too big to climb through the tunnels. A little piece of childhood gets put in a box, forgotten about, and never fully resurfaces. Perhaps that is why students had so many complaints about Midweek Mayhem (also known as the ticket blitz) last Thursday evening where students were able to purchase tickets for three...

Skipping school to be with cows
Most students at Goshen College have some hobby or interest that very few others know much about. For several past and present students, including myself, that interest is for an animal: the dairy cow. Maybe surprising for some, it’s also a reason to take off some days of classes. Last week was World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., the largest annual dairy event in the world. Every year, over 10,000 people from over 80 countries come to World Dairy Expo to show their cows in intense competitions, talk to hundreds of dairy and agriculture-related companies, and visit with friends and...

Squirrelly antics fascinate campus
Beth Glick’s walk to the library one March afternoon led to the discovery of what became the most famous squirrel on campus. Glick was originally fascinated with a particular black squirrel’s habit of standing straight up on its back legs while eating a nut, and then falling over flat onto its back. “After watching it fall over about 15 more times, I realized that maybe this chance experience was a little less rare than I first thought,” said Glick, a junior. Glick captured a short video of this phenomenon and, after uploading the clip onto Facebook and YouTube, it was...

Goshen chews new food service provider: AVI Fresh replaces Sodexo
Munch money and groceries will still be offered in fall 2009, but not from Sodexo, the current food service provider for Goshen College. On Tuesday, the college announced AVI Fresh as the new food service provider. A food service review task force consisting of six faculty and students considered four service providers in the review process: AVI Fresh, Chartwells, Creative Dining and Sodexo. As the review process continued, the task force eliminated Chartwells and Creative Dining from the list of candidates. Jim Histand, vice president of finance, said that each reviewed provider was assigned a point value to different aspects...

Lights off: Saving energy one hour at a time
It was only an hour, but Goshen College joined 50 million people around the world on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. to raise awareness about global climate change and energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lights during Earth Hour, sponsored by World Wildlife Fund. W.W.F. recognized Goshen College as a "flagship campus" along with 79 other college campuses across the United States. Glenn Gilbert , utilities manager of Physical Plant, signed the college up for the event. But to become a "flagship campus" President Brenneman signed a commitment to have events held on campus to celebrate Earth Hour. During the hour,...

Dream dates rendezvous in Chicago
Leah Moreno’s spring break included something not many other students can claim: a day in Chicago with a man on a global search for his dream girl. Moreno, a sophomore, had a dream in December that included a man she interpreted as her dream guy, and after some quick Google searches, it led her to Adam Pacitti’s Web site: thegirlofmydreams.co.uk. “I feel like it was God’s way of telling me this guy was coming into my life,” Moreno said. Pacitti started his Web site after having a dream in August with an image of the girl of his dreams. He...

Save lives on Friday at annual blood drive
The American Red Cross wants your blood. And you'll have the chance to give it to them during a blood drive on Friday, March 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Union gym. Sign-ups to give blood are already underway and will continue the rest of the week outside the cafeteria. "There is constant need for blood," said Meghan Hoover, a senior and community volunteer service assistant for campus ministries. "We have it; others need it. It takes only a small fraction of the day to give. You get to hang out with friends and lie around in...

After-school program to present peace projects
The Peace of the Arts program, initiated by the Goshen College multicultural affairs office, will present final projects from their spring program at noon on Feb. 19. In the one-hour long program in Newcomer 19, Peace of the Arts participants will present photography projects, poetry and skits pertaining to their studies. The program began after a gang shooting in 2005 and has since sought to provide an alternative after-school program that promotes intercultural dialogue and awareness through peaceful and creative mediums. Participants in the program range from grades nine through 12 and are selected through affiliation with the Boys and...

With their own eyes: GC students travel to Washington
They traveled hundreds of miles to stand for hours in cold temperatures in a crowd of over one million people. But for the handful of Goshen College students who saw Barack Obama's inauguration firsthand, it was worth it. Some traveled to Washington by car, others by plane. One was already in the city. Melody Musser, a junior, has been in D.C. this semester as an intern at the Washington Community Scholars Center. She noticed the city change as Inauguration Day approached. “There has been a lot of excitement among pretty much everyone that I have encountered in the weeks approaching...

My Clothes Aren’t Dirty – I Just Washed Them!
It is a room with a gray slate floor, four stark walls, 12 washing machines, 16 dryers, a large wastebasket and a change machine — a jungle of activity. Piles of clothes are heaped on the top of a wooden chest. One student is reaching into a broken machine and transferring sopping wet clothes into the next machine. Another student is tossing her clothes into the dryer, stepping over the rivulet of running water from the broken machine. It’s a room where clothes are washed, and students fight to survive. Case one: compact chores Elizabeth Speigle, a sophomore, trudges into...

How to decorate dorm rooms
For Krista Kaufman, a first-year social work major, healthy living is not only about where you live but how you live. Her room is one of the many examples of how students living in the residence halls can make a home for themselves despite the uniform shape rooms. She shares a Yoder 3 room with Ly Nguyen, a fellow first-year and business major. Both the girls love to be surrounded by life, beauty and art. Walking into Krista and Ly's room is like walking into a forest that collided with a rainbow. The dorm room is earthy and soothing while...
